Honda - 2023 European sustainability report update

Honda's 2023 financial year annual European Environmental report includes updates on further progress towards its sustainability goals, including Honda's long awaited electric debut in the motorcycle industry as a key milestone, with the launch of the EM1 e:. Honda’s first electric motorcycle in Europe, it uses in-house developed Honda Mobile Power Pack e swappable batteries "to help customers make the transition to fully electrified mobility".

The report outlines a "commitment to environmental policies and practices in the region" that includes investing more in sustainable materials and renewable energy, while reducing CO2 emissions in pursuit of global carbon neutrality by 2050.

This is Honda's 12th annual European Environmental report, and the company says that measured across the fiscal year from April 2022 to March 2023, another highlight has been the achievement of the commitment to electrify its mainstream automobile range. "The brand will continue to build on its electrified line-up towards its aim of releasing 30 new [automotive] EV models globally by 2030.

"This commitment to more sustainable operations extends beyond automobiles and is shaping the technology being developed across Honda’s motorcycle and power product divisions - influencing all environmental policies, practices and initiatives at the brand’s facilities across the region. "Honda is making investments in more sustainable materials and renewable energy, while significantly reducing CO2 emissions and energy usage. One example being the fact it purchases 97% of its electricity from renewable sources.

“As we continue to increase the focus we place on sustainability activities globally, it is clear that the European region can play a key role in the pursuit of our targets,” said Katsuhisa Okuda, President and Director of Honda Motor Europe.

Other key developments within Honda’s European Environment report include the expansion of e:PROGRESS, Honda’s intelligent electric vehicle charging service, soon to be available to Honda and other brand owners across Europe; a vehicle-to-grid pilot in Germany, demonstrating the role EVs can play in providing grid stability as part of a wider charging eco-system; the expansion of Honda’s Energy Research Programme, with the introduction of a green hydrogen production facility at the company’s European R&D centre in Offenbach, Germany; the company’s commitment to providing a positive social impact, including donating power products to support communities following natural disasters and increased solar panel contributions to energy production on manufacturing and logistics facilities.

Triumph

Triumph upgrades, revives Daytona, enters new era with TF 250-X

By Ben Purvis

The current Triumph Tiger 1200 only reached dealers in 2022, so it's still a pretty fresh face, but the bike has already come in for some substantial changes for 2024 models that will be available from April.

Based on feedback from some of the 14,000-plus customers who've bought the Tiger 1200 since its launch, Triumph has opted to rework the 1,160 cc three-cylinder engine, adding a heavier crankshaft and generator rotor and rethinking the balance shaft with the aim of improving low speed tractability and to make the bike easier to ride off-road.

The change comes just months after a mid-2023 update that saw all versions of the Tiger 1200 get improved Showa semi-active suspension capable of dropping the rear ride height by up to 20 mm as the bike comes to a halt, making it easier to get feet flat on the floor.

Triumph's latest engine changes don't alter the peak performance, 150 PS at 9,000 rpm and 130 Nm at 7,000 rpm, but promise better useability.

Tiger 1200 Rally Pro

The range is now made up of four models, the GT Pro, GT Explorer, Rally Pro and Rally Explorer, with the original entry-level version, the Tiger 1200 GT, dropping out. For 2024, the two 'Pro' models get the damped bars and risers that were previously exclusive to the Explorer versions. Both GT models get repositioned footpegs to increase cornering clearance.

Meanwhile, there's a quiet revival underway in the market for affordable, middleweight sports bikes as a growing number of manufacturers rediscover the all-rounder formula that made machines like Honda's CBR600F so successful in the 1990s.

Triumph is the latest to join that trend, reviving the Daytona name for the new Trident-based Daytona 660. While it would have been simple for Triumph to wrap a fairing around the existing Trident 660 roadster, instead the company has taken a more in-depth approach. Yes, it uses essentially the same steel frame, three-cylinder engine, tank and rear bodywork as the Trident, but there are revisions throughout.

Going up against an increasingly strong group of rivals that includes the likes of Yamaha's R7, Kawasaki's Ninja 650, Honda's CBR650R and Suzuki's new GSX-8R, the Daytona 660 has a unique selling point in the form of its three-cylinder engine and manages a combination of performance and price that its competitors struggle to match.

Where the Trident uses a 60 kW (80 hp) version of Triumph's signature three-cylinder engine, the Daytona 660 packs a 70 kW (94 hp) variant, slotting exactly onto the power limit for bikes that can still be detuned to 35 kW and used with an A2 licence in Europe.

The extra performance comes from a new cylinder head, crankshaft, camshafts, valves and exhaust header, but most importantly from the adoption of three individual throttle bodies instead of the single throttle used on the Trident. All the extra performance comes by moving the peak power higher up the rev range, without any loss in torque at lower rpm, with the maximum power arriving at 11,250 rpm instead of the Trident's 10,250 rpm.

Daytona 660

Torque is increased by 9%, too, with a peak of 69 Nm at 8,250 rpm, and there are three riding modes: sport, road and rain. The changes to the chassis include a steeper steering head angle, changing the fork rake from 24.6 degrees to 23.8 degrees, while the offset is increased and the wheelbase lengthened a fraction to 1,425.6 mm. Revised final drive gearing takes advantage of the engine's wider rev range.

Finally, it has been 40 years since building magnate John Bloor took the reins at Triumph - buying the company out of receivership and embarking on the slow journey back to prominence as a global motorcycle manufacturer - but this year's new TF 250-X marks one of the biggest steps since then as Triumph dives headlong into the off-road market.

The new motocross bike doesn't come as a surprise. Triumph has been open about its development since 2021 and already plans to add a larger 450 cc model next year alongside a pair of enduro models and has even adopted some big names including Ricky Carmichael and Ivan Cerventes into the project to make sure it's heading in the right direction. A works entry in the 2024 FIM Motocross World Championship has been set up with former Kawasaki team boss Thierry Chizat-Suzzoni at the helm and Monster Energy sponsorship, while a second works squad will compete in the AMA SuperMotocross World Championship.

For 2024, all those efforts will be focused on the new TF 250-X, the first dedicated Triumph motocross bike of the modern era, and customers can buy the same machine right now from a growing network of dedicated Triumph Motocross and Enduro Centres across Europe, the USA and Australia, with the target of 300 such outlets due to open by the end of this year.

TF 250-X

The TF 250-X itself packs a DOHC single-cylinder, 250 cc engine that features a 78 mm bore and 52.3 mm stroke, numbers that are fairly consistent with the measurements used by rival machines. A high, 14.4:1 compression ratio is more extreme than most, though, and the engine is packed with exotic components and materials including titanium valves and a forged aluminium piston. Helped by Dell'Orto fuel injection, the bike is claimed to have the highest power-to-weight ratio in its class, although Triumph hasn't announced the exact power figure.

Weight is kept to an impressive 104 kg (wet) thanks to an aluminium spine frame, which is fitted with KYB suspension at either end - 48 mm forks at the front, a piggyback shock at the rear - with full adjustability including separate high- and low-speed compression damping at the back. Brembo supplies the calipers, gripping Galfer discs, while the wheels use Dirtstar rims and machined aluminium hubs. As with the company's street bikes, Triumph appears to be targeting a high standard specification, but there are still options to improve the TF 250-X. You can add a titanium Akrapovic exhaust, improving throttle response and cutting weight further, and a variety of race-oriented add-ons including the MX Tuner Pro, a launch control system and an XTrig holeshot device.

The bike managed podium positions at its first competitive event, the opening round of the Spanish Motocross Championship, where Mikkel Haarup took two second place finishes and teammate Camden McLellan manged a third and a fourth.

SIP Performance

SIP Vespa racing cylinders

Engineered for Vespa 50-125 cc PV/ET3/PK/S/XL/2 LongFrame models, these SIP Performance racing cylinders in grey cast iron feature six overflow ports with 55.6 mm bore and 51 mm stroke, 8 x 8 mm stud bolt pattern, with 52 mm hole spacing and long thread spark plug design.

High-performance cylinder kit in the 125 cc class for Vespa SmallFrame models. The SIP Performance cylinder helps the small Vespas to achieve modern performance in the popular displacement class.

The modern layout of the overflow system makes it possible to achieve significantly better performance than with the original 125 cc cylinders used in the Vespa SmallFrame models. There is a modern-style channel layout with large cross-sections and high quality two-ring flat pistons and four gaskets.

The original Vespa SmallFrame engines only deliver 5.6 hp and 85 km/h. With the SIP Performance 125, the achievable power is on a par with the 133 cc-136 cc grey cast iron tuning cylinders that have been widely used since the 1990s.

These cylinders fit without modifications to the engine case and have a 118-degree boost port, 178-degree exhaust and 122-degree overflow.

"These are the perfect contemporary upgrade for SmallFrame Vespa engines," says CEO Ralf Jodl. "Our tip for the best set-up would be to add the SIP road banana, SIP engine case and SIP Performance ignition."

MIVV

MIVV for Husqvarna 701 Enduro/Supermoto

The STR-1 from Italian exhaust manufacturer MIVV has been designed by its in-house R&D department to "optimise the big single-cylinder that drives the two lightweight 701 versions (2021 - 2023) whilst remaining withing the Euro 5 regulations.

"Even as a Euro 5 exhaust, the STR-1 delivers a noteworthy increase in torque and power, a gratifying sound and refined compactness from all three of the available versions."

An easy-install direct replacement for heavier and larger OEM exhaust, it has a layout that has been designed to adapt to the spaces available on enduro bikes and "guarantees performance over the entire engine delivery range". There are two versions - an AISI 304 austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel 18/8, and titanium with 3k twill carbon end cap and support arm and a silencer that is also available in black stainless steel.

The STR-1 is equipped with a special dB killer developed to reduce noise without penalising performance. MIVV uses the latest generation of easily replaceable sound-absorbing materials and says that the STR-1 does not require remapping - product development was completed without making any changes to the electronics. To comply with Euro 5 homologation, in addition to the muffler, the MIVV ACC.041.A1 catalyst must be purchased.

For the 701, MIVV also produces a racing header in stainless steel, intended for those who use the bike on tracks or on closed courses. This is also built in 304 stainless steel and offers diameters that guarantee competition performance.

The header adopts the standard position and can be used both with the MIVV STR-1 silencer and with the original - it is provided with a lambda probe connection for any intervention on the electronics and does not require the use of a catalyst. This type of set-up respects the rules related to off-road competitions, but is not Euro 5 compliant.

MIVV quotes a +4.30 hp gain max. at 8,000 rpm and +4.20 Nm max. at 6,700 rpm. The increase is well established along the entire engine delivery range, rising decisively from low revs and remaining constant up to 9,000 rpm. The weight reduction is -2.20 kg.

EXAN

EXAN for Hypermotard 950

Italian exhaust manufacturer EXAN has two options (Euro 4 and Euro 5) for Ducati's 937 cc Testastretta 11 degree engined Hypermotard - for the 950, 950 RVE and 950 SP.

The options are its popular X-Black Oval (single) and the new X-One (double) - both approved to Euro 4 and Euro 5, so as to be able to meet all the years of production.

The new X-One (2-into-2) is the EXAN exhaust with a cylindrical line and an oblique cut steel finish for a slender and aggressive line. Connection to the standard manifolds, the X-One slip-on silencer is available in three different materials (black or light satin steel, carbon and titanium) and is designed as a "double" exhaust - just like the originals, but lighter and more powerful, especially at low and medium revs.

EXAN's handcrafted X-BLACK Oval (2-into-1) features its characteristic "rhomboidal" shape in carbon for another way of achieving a "slender and aggressive appearance". Connecting to the standard manifolds, the X-Black Oval slip-on is also available in three different materials - black or light satin steel, carbon and titanium.

Described as "considerably lighter than the original", it is said to deliver "extraordinary" torque increases at low and medium revs.

MIVV

MIVV for 2023 Transalp

Italian exhaust manufacturer MIVV first launched products for the Honda Transalp back in the year 2000 - it first went on sale in 1987 and was years ahead of its time.

Honda gave it 20 years, finally withdrawing it as the XL700ABS in 2007. However, the new XL750 looks set to be a staple for many years to come - the market has changed dramatically in the past decade, and so too have the roads and traffic conditions. The concept of the "crossover" is now a well-established and growing solution, though largely because such platforms make excellent urban and long-distance highway machines these days.

Available in several finishes, MIVV now has alternative (homologated) options for those looking to change-out the stock XL750 exhaust including the two Dakar and Oval exhaust versions seen here.

Oval black

The latest iteration of the Transalp (the 6th?) sees it going from V-twin to parallel twin with 21" front and 18" rear. Honda designed the lively, almost 'sporty' 755 cc engine for two comeback brands - the Hornet CB750 and the Transalp Gl750.

MIVV's choice of slip-ons both deliver reduced weight, improved performance, convincing sound and winning aesthetics.

The DAKAR is offered in two finishes with high positioning, the OVAL has a choice of three finishes and standard positioning - both work with side cases.

Optional accessories include two model-specific carbon fibre heat shield designs. Plus, there is a stainless steel de-cat pipe option for competition use.

The DAKAR is a project deriving from the experience acquired by the brand in the field of rally competitions. It is a simple and sturdy option, making it suitable for demanding off-road use.

Inox

The INOX version uses natural 304 steel with the addition of a special "pearled" effect, which makes it highly resistant'. The BLACK is created by painting the stainless steel body using a special ceramic-based process. The DAKAR delivers maximum power of +2.00 hp at 9,400 rpm; max torque of +2.00 Nm at 7,300 rpm and it weighs in at -1.10 kg.

The OVAL is a muffler with great attention to detail and capable of adapting to different types of motorcycles, representing the best compromise between design and performance. In the case of the TRANSALP, it adopts the standard positioning, not interfering with the possible assembly of side cases.

Three versions are offered - the INOX has a brushed 304 steel body, natural finish, the BLACK features the 'Black Moon' effect produced by ceramic-based paint and the BLACK with carbon end cap has a brushed black satin finish obtained from a special colouring process, with the addition of a carbon end cap.

The OVAL delivers maximum power of + 1.00 hp at 9,400 rpm; max torque of +1.00 Nm at 7,300 rpm and weighs in at -2.00 kg.

Biltwell

Everything that is old is new again

In 2014, California based Biltwell injected contemporary helmet technology with a heavy dose of '70s motorsport DNA to create the Gringo and Gringo S, the brand's first U.S. DOT compliant helmets for motorcycle riders.

Global volume movers like gloss black, flat black and vintage white will always occupy a place in Biltwell's color pallet.

Style-conscious riders rejoiced, and the classic full-face helmet was reborn. Soon after, the scrappy SoCal brand added ECE R22.06 certification to both models, and riders in Europe got a taste of the Biltwell style. "Today, Gringo and Gringo S are two of the most popular and easily recognised helmets in the world," says co-founder Bill Bryant.

In anticipation of the EU mandate for revised R22.06 safety standards, this year Biltwell completed a long list of major refinements to the fit, finish, sizing and construction of every colourful new 2023 Gringo and Gringo S helmet to satisfy the more robust ECE test protocols.

Metallic Grape Gringo SV: When the company introduced Metallic Grape on the all-new Gringo SV earlier this year, one of Biltwell's boldest colours yet shot to the top of the sales chart. The brand certainly knows how to hit home runs when it comes to style.

Upgrades to both models were comprehensive and have included three new moulded thermoplastic ABS outer shells for sizes from XS/S up to XL/XXL and new dual density EPS foam with moulded ventilation channels to improve heat dissipation and moisture evaporation.

The new three-piece removable and replaceable cheek pads and comfort liner uses open-cell foam padding, fleece Lycra touch points and vented polyester construction for breathability.

Desert Spectrum Gringo S: Another banger from the Biltwell archive, Desert Spectrum calls to mind the dune buggies that roam the Mojave Desert surrounding Biltwell's Southern California home.

Internationally there has been a move among helmet designers towards larger eye ports, and Biltwell has embraced this trend. The larger eye ports on the Gringo S deliver enhanced peripheral vision with a UN R22.06 approved visor that features a brass pin locking mechanism for fast, easy operation and tighter fit in the closed position.

Each new ECE R22.06-certified Gringo and Gringo S features the automotive-quality paint finishes that Biltwell helmets are famous for with a five-colourway line-up on the Gringo and seven for the Gringo S - flat and gloss black, gloss white, Metallic Cherry Red, Desert Spectrum, Dove Blue, Gloss Black Flames and Gloss White/Black Tracker.

Gloss Black Flames Gringo S: Biltwell resurrected pinstripe flames from its quiver of classic paint themes to create this beautiful gloss black and gold Gringo S.

Biltwell helmets, hard parts and riding gear are distributed in North America by Lemans Corp. in USA and Parts Canada north of the border.

Additionally, two distributors stock and sell Biltwell products in Europe: Motorcycle Storehouse in the Netherlands and Parts Europe in Germany.

MV Agusta

MV Agusta gearing up

It's been a year since the announcement of the strategic partnership and 25% stake between MV Agusta and KTM parent company PIERER Mobility AG., and with majority ownership now on the horizon (slated spring 2026 after Pierer exercised its call option), MV is already seeing the benefits of its bright new 'orange' future.

By tapping in on synergies, processes and strengths, MV has immediately achieved incredible results. In the past 12 months, it launched five very well received new models, the LXP Orioli, the world's first luxury all-terrain motorcycle, the iconic Superveloce 98, the wicked Brutale 1000 RR Assen, the limited edition Dragster RR SCS America, and the super exclusive six-units-only Superveloce Arsham, a true work of art.

Timur Sardarov

Probably the most significant leap forward at its Schiranna factory (near Varese in norther Italy) has been installation of an all-new production line through which MV Agusta is now able to produce up to one thousand bikes per month overall.

'100 bikes per day'

Assembly of its fully 'Made-in-Italy' models is still by hand, but now backed up by a fully automated line management system for the handling, moving and precise positioning of the units through the 28 workstations - with the emphasis on ergonomics and safety. This has been the first major investment for MV Agusta in several years, and while initial production will be around 1,000 units per month, the new line has a total capacity of 100 bikes per day, and plans are to gradually increase output to match demand.

Additionally, MV is now offering buyers a four-year factory warranty for all model year 2023 bikes and a lifetime 24/7 roadside assistance, activated upon the purchase of any MV Agusta motorcycle, in Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, France, Spain and the UK, with additional countries to follow.

Superveloce 98 Limited

A stronger and expanded dealer network in 2024 will see a target of 200 dealers active by mid-year with the focus on its most relevant markets - 21 of them will be in Italy, supported by authorised service centres. The dealer network will also be expanded in other markets, such as USA (where more than 40 dealers will be active in 2024), Germany, UK, France, and elsewhere.

'four-year factory warranty'

2024 will also see finalisation of all system integrations with the PIERER Mobility AG's established distribution and logistics, inventory, software/IT and dealer management tools. "The results will include reduced delivery time for parts, motorcycles, services, resulting in a much-improved customer experience."

Factory tours are being started this year, and additional new models are slated to include the Superveloce 1000 Serie Oro seen in its final development stage at EICMA.

Luca Martin, MV Agusta Motor S.p.A. Board Member and COO, has stated: "When we look back at the beginning of 2023, we are astonished by the number of changes, implementations and improvements that have been put in place during this first year working with KTM.

"Was it all perfect? No. We always strive for perfection, and therefore we are proud of what has been done, but at the same time we are fully aware of the further improvements that can be made.

'lifetime 24/7 roadside assistance'

"We are fully aware that our customers have experienced challenges, such as the delay in parts delivery or the renewed dealer network, which hasn't had an optimal penetration in the territories where they are needed. I want to take this opportunity to again let our customers and fans know that we listen to them, and every decision of ours is based on one unique goal: putting our customers at the centre of our attention.

 Schiranna facility

"When we decided to reboot the entire dealer network, we were aware that this would have created disruption at the beginning of the process, but we are also sure the decision has taken MV Agusta on the right path to provide the best customer experience in the future.

"The dealer network will further expand in 2024, with an improved coverage, and our product ambassadors and technicians at each single dealership are being extensively trained and the business partner selection process tightened. Customers are at the centre of our approach and to achieve that we have a lot to do.

'reboot the dealer network'

"The same goes regarding parts availability. The warehouse and system integration with PIERER Mobility AG has taken a considerable amount of time, causing temporary disruptions, but will be finalised in early 2024. I personally believe that transparency is the best way to create a healthy relationship with our customers and fans and therefore I wanted to take this opportunity to openly address the challenges that our customers have faced in 2023 and to thank them for their passion and love."

Vertex

 GP-Racers Choice pistons

In the January/February edition of IDN, we wrote about Vertex racing wins in 2023. This has put Vertex "in the holeshot" when it comes to getting an entire collection of pistons for 2 and 4-stroke engines updated for the 2024 motorcycle models.

For 4-strokes, Vertex Replica, High Compression and Big Bore ranges are led by its hot forged, high-strength aeronautical alloy, high-performance GP-Racers Choice pistons - designs that stand out for their exclusive F1 derived shape with internal support crosspiece, racing profile and head design that allows maximum compression ratio, improved low-end torque and optimised durability.

Coated with molybdenum disulfide to guarantee smoothness and resistance to wear, the high-performance piston assembly is completed with a DLC-coated piston pin, anti-rotation retaining rings, and new PVD treated (rather than chromed) segments that increases performance and reduces environmental degradation.

VStream windscreens - 2021 to current Yamaha MT-07

Maywood, Illinois based manufacturer National Cycle's new VStream windscreens are available in three different sizes and tints for the updated Yamaha MT-07. This means there is a perfectly sized windscreen for almost every rider - "all will offer improved wind protection and riding comfort compared to other aftermarket windscreens, making this light but powerful bike a perfect urban commuter or short distance tourer".

VStream gets its name from its unique patented shape. The advanced “V” profile and dimensional contours push the wind vortex out and away from the rider's helmet, resulting in a peaceful, quieter riding environment.

These windscreens are made from tough 3.0 mm Quantum hardcoated polycarbonate. This high-quality material, along with its internationally recognised state-of-the-art manufacturing techniques, "provides an outstanding level of clarity, impact strength and scratch resistance that is unmatched by any windscreen maker worldwide."

Quantum hardcoated polycarbonate "is the material of choice for serious motorcycle riders". It is rated at 10 times more abrasion resistant than FMR hardcoated polycarbonate, and 30 times more than windscreens made from commonly used acrylic or "aircraft plastic”. VStream windscreens are easy to install and are protected by a three-year warranty against breakage.

Matris

Matris for the Yamaha XSR 900

Italian suspension specialist Matris has added to its applications list with a complete set of front and rear suspension options for the 2022 Yamaha XSR 900 naked vintage style bike.

At the front, Matris offers a full range of award-winning hydraulic, asymmetric quad-valve system cartridge kits - the 25 mm asymmetric "sealed and pressurised" F25SA, its top-of-the-range high-end cartridge; the 25 mm asymmetric "classic" quad valve F25R, its classic cartridge for race-track use, and the 20 mm asymmetric quad valve F20K - its "entry level" cartridge for sport use.

All are fully adjustable on compression, rebound and spring preload, and are 100% 'plug-and-play' fully reversible installs that replace all the stock front fork internals with no modifications required to the bike.

At the rear side, the offer includes its M46KF and M46KD shock series. Both are multi-adjustable and can be equipped with a knob-hydraulic spring preload unit for easy and fast setting changes.

As is usual with Matris suspension product designs, front and rear suspensions are available with different spring rates to allow the ride to be tuned for rider weight and use, with the rear shocks additionally available in the popular Matris 'Dark Version' with black spring.

Additional new set-up options from the Vicenza based manufacturer include for the 2023 Honda XL 750 Transalp, Suzuki GZX-8S and Ducati 800 Scrambler models, plus for the 2022 Moto Guzzi V100 Mandello.
