Supersprox

Managing inflation in production

DJ Maughfling, CEO at Supersprox, read the piece we published last month (by Elisabetta Quadrini at Newfren, Turin) with interest - as did many other vendors. Her piece was about the supply chain difficulties being experienced as manufacturers run to keep up with product demand.

DJ told IDN: "Many production companies in the motorcycle industry are experiencing a massive surge in orders. On the face of this, it seems like an excellent opportunity to maximise productivity and reduce operational costs, resulting in healthy profits.
"Often the reality of the situation over the past five months has not been meeting expectations though because of exceptional growth in raw material prices. To take an example that we here at Supersprox have seen in steel prices - the price of steel has risen from € 580 per ton in January 2021 to € 1,075 in May, with further increases predicted.
"Even when the price of iron ore is decreasing and the London Metal Exchange (LME) shows a decreasing price graph, the reality is that the market is under capacity and steel producers are able to take advantage of the profits in the short term."

DJ says that it is currently very difficult to increase prices, with many producers waiting to see how their competitors are going to react first, while, all the time, production costs creep up. Supersprox has decided to take a different approach in relation to the price increase pressure. By focusing on bringing further process inhouse, it can reduce costs and compensate, to some degree, the growing price trend. This allows the company to grow volume capacity by creating a leaner structure.

Steel prices on the LME 2021

"To meet the need for cost reduction, we have purchased an additional building in Ukraine, close to our sprocket factory, and we are in the process of modernising it and setting up a zinc processing line, the goal being to be able to finish our sprockets completely ourselves.
"We will be able to reduce production costs by moving the labour involvement from Poland to Ukraine, where labour costs are still at least 40% lower. In addition, it will be possible to process parts on a daily basis - instead of the current 14 day batch and queue process - and we will then be able to make all the finishing process in Ukraine instead of Poland. Time is money - combining these two steps will save six weeks from our annual production cycle."
Supersprox plans to have the plant installed by the end of 2021 and start testing as soon as the system is online.
DJ went on to tell us that in his view, lowering the cost of production is critical for companies at this time of high inflation. "With the changes in China production and the high demand from local Chinese OEM motorcycle producers, the European production is looking more and more realistic."
Supersprox already claims to have a production cost for small runs that is the same as the going rate in China, and DJ is of the view that "with the current difficulties in buying from China, there is a window of opportunity to bring back some part of the medium volumes and more complex production to Europe."

UK motorcycle registrations

UK motorcycle registrations

As seen elsewhere in Europe, 2020 motorcycle registrations in the UK ended with a rush to pre-register unsold Euro 4 units that did not meet the strict timescale criteria set by the EU for the end of series derogation approved in advance of Euro 5 final implementation. This has distorted the statistical comparisons in the UK, Germany, Italy, Spain and most of Europe's markets - majors and otherwise - with the pandemic also making comparisons with 2019 'problematic'.

However, according to the latest available data from the MCIA, the motorcycle industry trade association in the UK, motorcycle registrations were at 40,424 for the first five months of 2021. Sales were down in January, February and March, but up strongly in April and May.
That compared to 28,881 units for the same period in 2020 (+39.97%), but down compared to the 45,181 units registered in the first five months of 2019.
In total PTW terms, the UK saw 42,858 units registered from January to May, +40.01% compared to the 30,611 units registered in 2020, but down from the 47,524 registered in 2019.
In motorcycle segment terms, Touring is the strongest market in the UK YTD, followed by Adventure Tourers. Honda was market share leader for May (followed by Yamaha, Triumph, BMW and Kawasaki), with the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 the bestselling single model in April in the <125 cc motorcycle segment.
For the record - motorcycle registrations in the UK grew slightly in 2019 with 100,472 units sold (+0.72%), with 2020 at 96,539 units.

Motul Grand Prix of Japan

Japanese GP cancelled - new dates for USA and Thailand

The FIM, IRTA and Dorna Sports have confirmed the cancellation of the Motul Grand Prix of Japan.

There is a new date for the Red Bull Grand Prix of the Americas at Austin, Texas - the event was previously postponed and will now take place from 1-3 October 2021.
The OR Grand Prix of Thailand will therefore take place a week later than previously scheduled, from 15-17 October.

With regard to the cancellation of the Japanese GP for 2021, Dorna Sports stated that "the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and resulting travel complications and logistical restrictions mean that it has not been possible to go ahead with the event at this time meaning that it will therefore not feature on the 2021 calendar. The FIM MotoGP World Championship looks forward to returning to race in front of the Japanese fans at their home Grand Prix in 2022."

MV Agusta

MV Agusta Secures Strategic Growth Plan

MV Agusta has secured a € 30m share capital increase to support its 5-year business plan - aiming at the continuation of the worldwide growth of the company. The investment brings MV Agusta's net equity to a total of € 70m.

The initiative is also said to mark the positive, final and early settlement of all its obligations under the 'Composition with Creditors' on a going concern basis ("concordato preventivo in continuità aziendale" in Italian law) - described by MV as "an uncommonly positive achievement which was made possible thanks to the relevant support of MV Agusta's shareholders."

Since 2019, when the Sardarov family became the sole shareholder of the company, more than € 150m have been injected into the business to support operations and the investments of the new industrial plan.
Timur Sardarov, CEO of MV Agusta Motor S.p.A., is quoted as saying: "One of my first objectives was to put an end to the financial stress the company had been experiencing and lay the industrial and commercial structures for growth. Today all these objectives have been reached in full and now we can look at the future with renewed confidence while we continue to move from one successful product to another.
"This capital injection will literally boost our business on all fronts, from the design, development and production of stunning new bikes to providing world-class service to all our customers and expanding our 3.0 worldwide dealer network. In 2021 we expect to exceed
€ 100m revenues for the first time in our history and to triple our performance within the next three years."
Massimo Bordi, Vice Chairman of MV Agusta Motor S.p.A., added: "MV Agusta is a great brand with a prestigious heritage. It's always had very attractive products that everybody appreciates for their unique design, high performance and advanced technology. That's why today I see a great potential in the company, which I hadn't seen in the past years. We have finally created the conditions to allow MV Agusta write a new successful chapter in the history of motorcycling."

Ampelio Macchi is new COO
In other news, MV Agusta has moved to strengthen the management team reporting to CEO Timur Sardarov with the appointment of experienced industry executive Ampelio Macchi as Chief Operations Officer (COO).

"During his long career as a technician manager in the motorcycle industry, Ampelio also acquired significant experience in economics and finance. In 1983, he joined Cagiva (MV Group) prior to becoming General Manager and Technical Director at Husqvarna (MV Group).
"In 2002, Ampelio joined Aprilia as CEO and Technical Manager of its off-road division. More recently Ampelio founded his own engineering company and was CEO/Co-Founder of SWM Motorcycles. He has taken part in projects in Russia, Brazil, China, the Czech Republic, Taiwan and won 51 World Championship titles: 46 with Husqvarna, 5 with Aprilia.
"For MV Agusta and New Mobility Solutions, Ampelio will now hold the position of Chief Operations Officer."

Puig

Puig additions

Based at Granollers, outside Barcelona (near the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya), Spanish parts and accessories specialist Puig continues to add to its fast-growing product range with regular additions and updates.
Originally best known for its plastic parts and air tunnel software derived windscreens, Puig is a long-term Official Kawasaki Racing Team (KRT) Technical partner, and the durability and design innovation needed for life with the most successful of teams in the hugely competitive and demanding World SBK series is evident in the design details, manufacturing quality, control and materials research that goes into all Puig parts.
Here is a selection of recent additional new products for 2021…

New generation Touring windshields
Seen here on the BMW R18, Puig's new generation of Touring windshields are designed for naked-style models with non-round headlights.

Manufactured in 3 mm PMMA (also known as 'acrylic glass'), they are tuned for aerodynamic performance and optimal weather protection; for some models there are two designs available,  New Generation Sport or New Generation Touring, in a range of colourways.

Naked front spoiler
Seen here on the Yamaha MT-09 (2020) and made from impact-resistant 3 mm matt black ABS, Puig's new front spoiler design for naked style models is said to improve the aerodynamics, sporting character and aesthetics with an "aggressive and elegant look".

The design will "channel the air that reaches the radiator frontally and, thanks to its shapes, provide almost 2 kg of downforce on the front wheel - generating an anti-wheelie and anti-shimmie effect for greater stability at high speeds, more poise under braking and greater stability when changing direction".

Handguard extension

Seen here on the Triumph Tiger 900 (2021), Puig handguard extensions add extra protection to the handguards on selected cross-over ('dual-purpose') models. Manufactured in hard and highly scratch-resistant PMMA (Polymethylmethacrylate), they are aerodynamic and protect motorcycle levers and riders' hands. Offered in a choice of clear smoked, dark smoked and transparent to match the screens.

Manual Elevation Mechanism
Available for the KTM 790 Adventure (2021), Puig's windscreen Manual Elevation Mechanism (M.E.M.) "improves the performance of the motorcycle and provides dynamic aerodynamic protection that is adaptive to the characteristics of each driving moment and situation.

"It is a compact mechanism that allows tool-free modification of the position of the screen to adapt itself to the different situations that the chosen route demands. You can raise and increase the aerodynamic protection on fast roads or in adverse weather conditions, and you can also decrease it in the city or when driving off-road for a wide field view without interference, and for a sporty look.
The mechanism works with OEM and Puig screens.

Kickstand extensions
Seen here on the Suzuki DL1050 V-Strom, this kickstand extension is 100% wider than the OEM design and allows parking on soft or uneven surfaces with greater safety. It is a mixed piece - part stainless steel, part CNC-machined from an aluminium block with rear anodising.

These materials provide greater resistance while maintaining a low weight (110-160 g, depending on the model).

Scooter levers
This new scooter lever design "emphasizes the minimalist and avant-garde character of current scooters. Milled from a single aluminium block, the piece is then anodised in a black or silver tone".

Puig's designers have incorporated a regulation and adjustment system through a small wheel, located in the anchor area - the rider can modify the distance at which the fist lever remains at its maximum extension - an excellent feature for people with small hands. It improves the feel of two-finger braking and allows riders to keep them on the lever - a key defensive driving technique for city riders.

Honda

Honda

In any normal year, if Honda's full year (ended March 31st, 2021) motorcycle sales revenue had fallen by -13.2% (11.59bn) then one would assume that we were all in deep trouble. But when was the last time anyone in the international motorcycle industry saw anything even remotely resembling 'normal'?
Honda's results for the fiscal year ended at the end of March are remarkable given what happened during that period.

Despite the decrease in demand due to the pandemic, despite semiconductor supply shortages, despite supply chain disruptions, freight costs and all the other materials and component inflationary pressures, Honda has posted consolidated fiscal year operating profit of 660.2bn yen - due primarily it says to "control of selling, general and administrative (SG&A) expenses and cost reduction efforts based on a review of business activities" as well reduced provision for credit losses in its financial services business.
"Despite the impact of an increase in raw material prices, Honda plans to achieve a consolidated operating profit of 660bn yen for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2022 (FY22), equivalent to that of FY21, by increasing unit sales and making progress in initiatives to solidify its existing businesses. Although production adjustments are currently being made at some Honda production operations globally, due primarily to the semiconductor supply shortages, Honda will minimise the impact of such production adjustments for the full-year results.
Total corporate sales revenue was 13,170.5bn yen (a year-on-year decrease of -11.8%), with operating profit up by +4.2% (660.2bn yen). Q4 sales revenue was 3,623.8bn yen
(-4.8%); operating profit was 213.2bn yen (+218.8bn yen).
Its motorcycle business sales revenue was 529.1bn yen (+55.5bn yen) - "the increase was mainly due to the recovery of sales in Asia". Operating profit was 72.2bn yen (+8.7bn yen) - "due primarily to an increase in profit related to changes in sales volume, model mix and cost reduction efforts".
Honda Group motorcycle unit sales were 4.3m units in Q4 (+0.24%) and 15.1m units for the full year (+0.13%). For the full year, unit sales in Europe, North America were essentially flat at 234,000 units, 332,000 units and 215,000 units respectively. Unit sales in Asia were down by nearly 4,000 units for the 12 months (13,319 units) and -21.8% down globally for the 12-month period.

Toshihiro Mibe - 2050 vision

In his first speech since taking the top job at Honda in April, President and Representative Director Toshihiro Mibe laid out his vision for Honda's priorities in the coming decades, defining Honda as a "mobility company that offers a wide range of products."
Stating that Honda will "work comprehensively to address challenges in the areas of the environment and safety," Mibe set out the Board of Directors' ambitions to achieve carbon neutrality and to "lead the advancements which will be made in the areas of mobility, the power unit, energy and robotics" and to remain committed to ensuring the attainment of its goal to "solidify our existing businesses."
The headline news was the "three initiatives in pursuit of zero environmental impact will be striving to realise carbon neutrality for all products and corporate activities by 2050 - not only of our products but the entire product lifecycle including our corporate activities.
"Honda will focus on 'three pillars' of our initiatives - carbon neutrality, clean energy and resource circulation" - also known as the Circular Economy.
"For the further expansion of the use of renewable energy, we will be proactive in promoting the utilisation of hydrogen. We will strive to realise a "multi-pathway of energy," which is a concept of utilising a wide variety of energy sources including carbon-neutral fuels, which will be effective in all areas.
"Including more effective ways to reuse and recycle batteries, Honda is pursuing research on material recycling and will take on the challenge of developing products made from 100% sustainable materials.

"Honda will focus on three core areas - expansion of the utilisation of Mobile Power Packs, utilisation of large-capacity batteries for electrified vehicles and application and implementation of fuel cell systems."
Addressing the electrification of motorcycle products specifically, Mibe laid out a multi-channel pathway, stating that "Honda will strive to lead the motorcycle industry at the forefront of its environmental initiatives with an approach which will include not only electrification but also the improvement of the fuel efficiency of gasoline engines, utilisation of biofuels and other strategies.
"The key to successful electrification of motorcycle products is to consider the battery (which is still expensive) separately from the motorcycle. In developed countries, where electrification is in strong demand by society, we will pursue electrification utilising Mobile Power Pack, targeting our B-to-B (business-to-business) and B-to-G (business-to-national/local governments) customers.
"For personal-use customers, we must not only enhance our product line-up, but also make a large number of battery-swapping stations available and ensure convenience to users by making them compatible with EVs of other makers.
"To accommodate the diverse needs of our customers, in addition to introducing GYRO e: and GYRO CANOPY e: in the area of business-use bikes, scheduled for this year, we are going to introduce three new EV models in the area of personal use, in classes with engine sizes of below 50 cc and below 125 cc, by 2024. We also will introduce new products in the 'FUN' area as well."
Mibe was also 'strong' on continuing to pursue fuel cell technology. "Hydrogen is expected to be popularised as a renewable energy source. Honda has a long history of researching, developing and commercialising fuel cell technologies."

Germany motorcycle registrations

Germany motorcycle registrations

The latest data from the IVM, the motorcycle industry trade association in Germany, shows new motorcycle registrations are down slightly for the first five months of the year at 55,962 (-1.59% compared to the 56,867 unit registered in 2020). Having been down in January and February, up in March and April, there were 13,600 units registered in May (-6.36% compared to last year, and down massively compared to the 65,719 units registered in 2019).

In total PTW terms, the German market was up at 87,477 units YTD (+2.73% compared to the 85,151 units recorded for the first five months of 2020). That compares to 87,756 units sold January to May 2019 - the best for the first five months of any year since 2008.
In market share terms, BMW remained market leader with a much improved 28.05% share at 15,696 units sold YTD - BMW had seven models in the top twenty best sellers. Honda is in second spot in market share terms, followed by Kawasaki, KTM and Yamaha.
Unsurprisingly, the top selling model was BMW's R 1250 GS (5,501 units YTD), followed by the Kawasaki Z900 and Z650 in third, Honda CRF 1000L Africa Twin fourth, and the BMW F 900 R fifth.
For the record - the 2019 full year saw the German motorcycle market grow by +4.38% compared to 2018 at 113,039 units, with 2020 posting a (theoretical) 132,126 units, however, that apparent 16.89% growth in a pandemic hit year was distorted in the final quarter by the rush to pre-register unsold Euro 4 bikes before the final, extended deadline for doing so on December 31st - so, at best, and in common with the data for all of Europe's 'Big Five' (Italy, France, Spain, Germany and the UK) account for some 80% of total motorcycle registrations; the German data for 2020 is 'problematic' for multiple reasons.

BS Battery & Sherco

BS Battery and Sherco forge new partnership

French battery manufacturer BS Battery has announced a new partnership with French motorcycle manufacturer Sherco.
BS Battery is now to be the official supplier for all Sherco motorcycles, which further reinforces the strong position that BS Battery already has as an OEM battery-of-choice.

CFMoto

CFMoto 800MT: China's KTM
By Ben Purvis

An ever-closer relationship with KTM has spawned the new CFMoto 800MT, which got its official unveiling at the Shanghai Motor Show based on a licence-made KTM LC8c twin. Although it's likely to be at least another year before we see the 800MT on export markets, it's intended to be a global model, with production due to start before the end of Q2 2021.
It's powered by a 799 cc version of the LC8c engine, as used in the KTM 790 Duke and 790 Adventure. CFMoto already manufactures those engines on KTM's behalf, and this year has started making complete 790 Dukes and Adventures for the Chinese market. With 94 bhp and 57 lb-ft of torque, the CFMoto 800MT's engine is in the same spec that was used in the 790 Adventure, which has since been superseded in Europe by the more powerful 889 cc '890' version.
The steel frame is also basically identical to the KTM Adventure's chassis, albeit with a new aluminium swingarm, but despite competing in the same adventure bike market, the CFMoto 800MT is a quite different proposition to the Austrian bike.
Where KTM doesn't compromise on off-road ability, the 800MT is a more road-oriented machine, with a conventional 19-litre fuel tank mounted above the engine instead of the KTM's low-slung, side-mounted twin tanks.

CFMoto is to offer two versions of the bike, a base model with no luggage, which weighs 231 kg wet, and a 248 kg model with panniers and a top box.
As with many new Chinese bikes, the 800MT is heavy on technology. Cruise control, a heated seat and grips, built-in sat-nav, keyless ignition and automatic high-beam headlights are all standard fit. Unusually, given the close KTM connection, the CFMoto uses KYB suspension rather than a WP product, with upside-down forks and a monoshock rear. The brakes are from Spanish provider J.Juan -  now owned by Brembo.

Chinese-made KTM 750s
KTM is developing a new range of 750 cc models as part of a joint venture with its Chinese collaborator CFMoto.
The new machines, which will include a 750 Duke, 750 Adventure and 750 Supermoto T, are to be built by CFMoto in China but sold globally - effectively replacing the now gone '690' range.
Although the plans have been confirmed by an investor-relations presentation from KTM's parent company, PIERER Mobility, there's no detail yet on the design or configuration.
They are likely to be powered by a slightly downsized version of the LC8c parallel twin engine, which CFMoto already manufactures on KTM's behalf in 799 cc and 889 cc versions. With European KTMs using the LC8c, all adopting the 889 cc '890' version, a detuned 750 cc variant would be separate enough to establish its own position in the market.
KTM has also long been working on a 500 cc '490' parallel twin with Indian partners Bajaj, and between them the 490 and 750 models will comprehensively fill the gap in the firms' range between the 373 cc '390' single-cylinder models and the 890 Duke and Adventure.
By outsourcing manufacturing responsibilities to its partners in China and India, and allowing Bajaj and CFMoto to also use the engines in their own machines, KTM will be in a position to vastly increase its output without the need to expand its current Austrian facility, and benefit from the lower manufacturing costs in China and India.
KTM has cooperated with CFMoto for a decade and in 2018 broke ground for a new headquarters for the CFMoto-KTMR2R brand in China - including manufacturing, R&D and testing facilities on a 25-acre site. It now has a production capacity of around 50,000 bikes per year.
At the moment, there's no confirmed launch date for the new 750 models, but the motorcycle press in China is already speculating that an RC750 sports bike will also be introduced alongside the 750 Duke, Adventure and Supermoto T.

Bihr

Two for the price of one

With so many tens of thousands of parts in its inventory, it is no wonder that Bartenheim, France headquartered distributor Bihr is one of Europe's most prodigious dealer catalogue publishers - indeed for 2021, its Street programme is so vast that the company will produce two catalogues.
Available now, Part 1 features its accessory products for street, touring, sport bike and ADV model dealers and their customers.

"Whether new brands or new sections, year after year the Bihr Street and Off-Road catalogues are expected and regularly serve up their share of new products and surprises.
"For 2021, the road catalogue has been redesigned to incorporate the arrival of new brands, absorb the growth of new segments and vendors and adapt to the needs of the professionals who rely on us as their inventory partner.
"There are now two catalogues that bring together the entire street and sport bikes ranges of products available from Bihr - available in just 24 hours for most of Europe. Part 1 is available now and is dedicated to the equipment and customisation of two wheels, while the second volume will bring together the hard parts and performance items.
"The growth of the dedicated sections (adventure and racing especially) that appeared in previous editions and the arrival of so many new brands last year - from vendors such as Gilles Tooling and clutches from Rekluse (to name just two) - have led the Bihr team to split the range into the two catalogues where there used to just be the one!
"Volume 1 features exhausts, racing products, adventure and travel, vintage and the important section dedicated to the equipment, protection and personalisation of motorcycles - this occupies a little more than half of the 904 pages of this first catalogue.
"The second, purely mechanical part with the new applications for the 2020 and 2021 models will be found in the second catalogue and will group the engine, electrical and chassis sections together. Volume 2 will follow in just a few weeks.
"Even so, these two volumes are still only part of the Bihr story, filtration, batteries, spark plugs, transmission, braking, lubricants, service and maintenance products will remain grouped together in a third Bihr Meisterwerk - our consumables catalogue."

BMW Race Trophy 2021

The BMW Motorrad Race Trophy is back for 2021 - "with a new scoring system and attractive prizes for the best privateer BMW riders in the world".
The unique customer racing competition was launched in 2014 and enters its seventh season, after the pandemic-enforced break last year. As this year's main prize, BMW Motorrad Motorsport will present the Race Trophy winner with a BMW M 1000 RR worth around € 33,000.
"The close collaboration with our privateer customer racers around the world is always very important to us here at BMW Motorrad Motorsport," said Dr. Markus Schramm, Head of BMW Motorrad.

The new BMW M 1000 RR, one of the two Race Trophy platform bikes.

"We are proud of the big, global family of riders that we have built up consistently in recent years. Our race support provides our customers with comprehensive support when it comes to any technical questions about using their BMW racing bikes, and with on-site support at the racetrack. With this special competition we bring the BMW racers from a variety of race series around the world together as one big, strong community."
The BMW Motorrad Race Trophy unites privateer BMW racers from various international and national race series in a consolidated ranking.
The positioning in the overall standings of the Race Trophy is now decided based on the participants' winning percentage in their respective race series. This is the percentage share of championship points that they attained in relation to the maximum potential score in the race series. This winning percentage will be recalculated after each race weekend and incorporated into the latest interim results of the Race Trophy.
The participants who finish in second to tenth place in the final classification of the Race Trophy will also be awarded prizes, receiving vouchers for BMW Motorrad parts packages, with a total value of just under € 40,000.
The 2021 BMW Motorrad Race Trophy is open to all privateer riders competing on the BMW S 1000 RR or the BMW M 1000 RR in one of the race series and championship classes classified for the Race Trophy this season.

Vertex

Vertex updates its 4-stroke pistons

After a motocross season that once again saw Vertex emerge as World Champions, and thanks to the close collaboration it has with the best international teams and riders, Italian specialist Vertex Pistons has further refined its 4-stroke pistons range "to guarantee the highest technological level and the highest reliability for the 2021 racing championships".
Equipped with a molybdenum disulfide coating - to enhance smoothness, performance and wear resistance - they are available in four models: Pro Replica, Pro High Compression, Pro Big Bore and GP-Racer’s Choice ("the choice of motocross champions" - including multiple MXGP world champion Tim Gajser).

The Pro Replica model is made with a forged aluminium body, racing profile, anti-seize MoS2 coating and original ring kit to perfectly replace the standard piston while offering an excellent quality/price ratio.
The Pro High Compression model is produced with a specific, dedicated forging and has the shape of the top completely revised by the Vertex R&D engineers, with an increase in the compression ratio that improves power and torque.
The Pro Big Bore model has a similar design to the standard piston but is a larger diameter with a relative increase in the displacement, which leads to a considerable improvement in performance.
At the top of the range, the Vertex GP-Racer's Choice model is hot forged with high resistance VP-310 alloy and equipped with an exclusively machined T-Bridge that is by F1 technology, a DLC coated pin (Diamond Like Coating), rings in chromed or nitrated steel (depending on the application) and a special shape on the head that allows the maximum compression ratio and great performance without any loss of reliability.
For 2021, the range of hi-tech pistons dedicated to 4-stroke off-road motorcycles has been further expanded with new enduro models for the Beta RR 350/390/430/480 and the whole KTM, Husqvarna and GasGas off-road line - as well as maintaining the production of pistons for Honda CRF 250/450, Kawasaki KX 250/450 F, Yamaha YZ 250/450 F and Suzuki RM-Z 250/450.

Bihr

Bihr buys 100% ownership of Paaschburg & Wunderlich as its expansion plans gather pace

Bartenheim, France based distributor Bihr has acquired German distributor and own-brand parts designer Paaschburg & Wunderlich (P&W).
Based near Hamburg, the shareholders of P&W agreed to Bihr acquiring 100% of the shares in P&W on the basis that "joining forces will allow us both to accelerate our growth in Europe. The objectives of the transaction are threefold.

"First, the distribution network of P&W will be leveraged to offer a wider access to Bihr's portfolio of brands, particularly in Germany. Conversely, the deployment of P&W's motorcycle parts and accessories will be accelerated by capitalising on the distribution network of Bihr. In addition, the recently incorporated US subsidiary of P&W will serve to support the expansion of the Bihr house brands - primarily the RST apparel range - in North America.

Dr. Oliver Moosmayer, left, with Bihr CEO Christophe Piron

"Leveraging the Bihr network to grow our business is a once in a lifetime opportunity," said Dr. Oliver Moosmayer, former majority shareholder and Managing Director of Paaschburg & Wunderlich. "With a network of more than 15,000 active dealers, the enlarged group is second to none in Europe," he added.
"From an organisation perspective, Dr. Oliver Moosmayer has been appointed Chief Product Officer of Bihr and will focus on developing all the parts and accessories in-house brands of the group. Dr. Moosmayer will also be part of the Executive Committee of the enlarged group."
Christophe Piron, CEO of Bihr, said: "It is a real pleasure to welcome P&W and its management team into the Bihr Group. Their expertise will be a very valuable addition for Bihr and for its clients.

"once in a lifetime opportunity"

"Moreover, the distribution networks are complementary to each other, and the strong presence of P&W in Germany will not only allow us to expand the parts and accessories offering, but will also accelerate the deployment of our rider gear brands in the country."
Like the other Executive Committee members of Bihr, Dr. Moosmayer will report to Christophe Piron and will become a shareholder of the enlarged group.
Founded in 1982, P&W GmbH is one of the largest wholesalers of spare parts and accessories for the motorbike industry in Germany. The team at P&W has extensive combined knowledge that enables it to develop high-quality motorbike accessories. P&W's current product portfolio consists of approximately 100 brands, six of which are in-house brands, including HIGHSIDER, LSL and Shin Yo.
The company operates from its own 4,000 sq m warehouse and offices in Glinde (near Hamburg) as well as from locations in Krefeld (Germany) and in Morgan Hill (CA, USA). It serves more than 4,300 dealers.
Many of P&W's product lines are recognised internationally, especially the LSL programme of high quality, design-led custom parts. Bihr will add considerable added dimension to P&W though, especially internationally.
The company distributes rider gear, custom accessories and spare parts, workshop equipment and service items, including tyres. Its markets stretch from motorcycles and scooters to off-road products - from MX and Enduro to ATV and UTV vehicle products.
Founded in 1975 by Cyrille Bihr, Bihr is present in over 15 countries. Its portfolio comprises about 250 brands and 200,000 items distributed through a network of 12,000 active dealers.
Bihr employs some 680 people, including 74 in-house sales representatives and 35 customer service representatives.
"From the outset, the strength and foundation of our success has been based on comprehensive services and first-class logistics. With a total storage area of more than 51,000 m2 spread over six warehouses, Bihr can supply almost all dealers in Europe within 24 hours," said Christophe Piron.
In Germany, Bihr will operate under two commercial names - its existing Bihr sales subsidiary and Paaschburg &Wunderlich powered by Bihr.

New models could transform China's presence in the international motorcycle industry
By Ben Purvis

For years it has been unclear if China's huge but largely domestic-facing motorcycle industry will ever replicate the rise of the Japanese manufacturers more than forty years ago. Now, a growing number of high-end, export-focused Chinese brands suggest just such a revolution could already be underway...

The latest Chinese brand to appear on European markets is a relative newcomer to the bike industry, Benda. The cruiser-focused company has hit the market in Spain and Portugal as well as related territories, including the Azores and Canaries - and later this summer it will launch its most ambitious model yet, the LFC 700.
At the moment, Benda's range is made up of singles and twins between 125 cc and 400 cc, with its newest in Europe an impressive looking 300 cc V-twin, called the Fox. However, the LFC 700 will catapult the brand into a completely new market, as it uses a homegrown 680 cc inline four-cylinder engine mounted in an aluminium chassis - all wrapped in styling that will turn heads even if parked alongside the latest European exotica.

Benda LFC 700

The LFC 700 was previewed as the LF-01 concept bike last year, but prototypes have now been spotted on test in China and the company is promising a full unveiling on 1st July 2021. All indications are that the production model will be near-identical to the show bike, which had a Ducati XDiavel-style muscle-cruiser stance, but a look all of its own.
The engine, developed by Benda, appears to share some similarities with Honda's CB650 four-cylinder, but it's not a direct copy. The 67 mm bore is the same, as is the 11.6:1 compression ratio, but Benda's unit has different castings for the cases, cylinders and head, as well as a longer-throw crankshaft to add 2 mm to the stroke, at 48 mm, for a 680 cc total capacity. The bike itself is much larger than you might expect from that engine size, with a total length of 2,430 mm - the same as a Harley-Davidson Road Glide - and a vast 1,720 mm wheelbase. However, the alloy frame means it weighs only 215 kg, at least in LF-01 concept form.
Benda LF-01

The crazy dimensions are matched by a huge 310/35-18 rear tyre, allied to a more modest 130/70-19 front. Benda has said that buyers will be able to specify a 240-section rear tyre if they prefer. The original concept bike's engine featured an unusual intake system with a single ride-by-wire throttle butterfly and a long manifold splitting the air going to the four cylinders, rather like a car engine might use, but the production version is expected to revert to a more conventional setup with individual throttles for each cylinder. The intake air itself enters via a finned duct surrounding the small LED headlight, while the exhaust is just as flamboyant, with four individual exits from a central under-engine collector box.
The LFC 700 isn't the only ambitious project underway at Benda, either. Earlier this year the company said it is also working on a small-capacity, turbocharged sports bike, the VTR 300 Turbo. Given the fast development of the LFC 700, it might not be long before we see that bike as well.

Voge ER10

Benda isn't the only Chinese brand to have arrived in Europe recently, as Voge - a high-end sub-brand of the long-established Loncin marque - has also met Euro 5 emissions requirements with its machines. They are already sold in countries including Spain and Germany and will arrive in the UK soon. Lexmoto parent firm Llexeter Ltd has already set up a Voge UK website, and its dealer network is ideally placed to provide nationwide coverage for the brand.
Voge's current product range includes a range of 300 cc and 500 cc models, but its most intriguing and latest offering is the ER10 electric bike - the result of a long-running development project that originally began under another Chinese company, Sur-Ron. The ER10 fits into the 125 cc licence class with a rated 'continuous' power of 8 hp, but like most electric bikes, it's capable of brief bursts of significantly more than that. Torque is rated at 31 ft-lb, and the ER10 should be good for around 56 mph and a range of about 60 miles at 30 mph. The range may be short, but it's plenty for most daily commutes and means the ER10 can use a relatively small, light battery, keeping the bike's weight down to just 122 kg.
