European PTW registrations +1.4 percent, Jan-Nov 2014
Although several of the major Western and Southern European motorcycle industry trade associations are already able to report their full year 2014 new motorcycle registrations data, the task that Brussels-based international motorcycle industry trade association ACEM face in providing a pan-European statistical overview is a more complex and time-consuming one.
Their latest data released on 19th January brings together new motorcycle registration information from most of the European markets that ACEM covers (with the exception at that time of Bulgaria, Cyprus and Malta) for the 11 months of 2014 up to and including November.
A total of 1,103,300 PTWs were registered during the first eleven months of 2014 in the EU. This represents an increase of 1.4 percent compared to the 1,087,600 units registered between January and November 2013. The Spanish, the UK and the German markets performed positively, with registrations increasing by 16.6 percent, 10.5 percent and 2.3 percent respectively. Registrations went down in France and Italy (-1.2 percent and -1.7 percent respectively).
Between January and November 2014, motorcycle registrations grew by 6.9 percent compared to the same period in the previous year. A total of 774,100 motorcycles were registered, compared to 724,000 for the first eleven months of 2013. Year-on-year motorcycle registrations increased in key European markets including Spain (+20.2 percent), UK (+12.1 percent), Germany (+8.4 percent), France (+3.5 percent) and Italy (+1.3 percent).
Moped registrations continued to decrease. Between January and November 2014, a total of 329,200 mopeds were registered in the EU, compared to the 363,500 registered in the same period of 2013, a decrease of 9.4 percent. Registrations fell by 1.6 percent in the UK, 5.5 percent in Spain, 8.1 percent in France, 15.6 percent in Italy and 16.9 percent in Germany.

Germany posts fourth consecutive year of growth
The latest data released by the German motorcycle industry trade association (IVM) show German motorcycle registrations up over 84 percent in December 2014, albeit on low volumes - 2,346 units (compared to 1,274 in December 2013), with the market closing out the year at +10.8 percent (96,823 units) over 2013 (87,423 units).
This means that last year was the fourth year in succession in which new motorcycle registrations increased in Germany.
In total PTW terms, the German market was up by just under 60 percent in December (3,203 units compared to 2,005 in 2013) and has finished +8.7 percent for the full twelve months of 2014 at 140,609 units.
Not surprisingly, BMW was the top selling manufacturer in Germany in 2014, taking 16.4 percent of the market. Honda was second, with 12.9 percent; followed by Yamaha with 11.3 percent, KTM with 8.6 percent, Kawasaki with 7.1 percent, Harley-Davidson with 7.5 percent, Piaggio with 7 percent, Suzuki with 5.4 percent, Ducati with 3.3 percent and Kymco with 1.9 percent.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary, the annual GB Motorcycle Trade Expo (January 18 - 20) saw a 20 per cent increase in visitor numbers on its return to Stoneleigh Park near Coventry, after seven years at the NEC, Birmingham.
The return to the venue was popular with visitors and exhibitors, with final three day attendance confirmed at 3,794 visitors, representing 1,638 companies.
Europe's largest and oldest motorcycle industry trade/dealer-specific expo, in the past decade the event has reflected the rise and fall of the market in the UK, as the recession impacted on new motorcycle registrations and the parts, accessory and apparel revenues available to motorcycle dealers and accessory stores.
However, with the UK market having returned to growth strongly in the past four years, there is now evidence that the growth in new registrations is now also beginning to filter through into increased parts, accessory and apparel revenues, with workshop revenues and the consumption of service items having remained high throughout.
Although the period up to 2012 saw a decline in the annual numbers of motorcycle journeys and total riding distance recorded in the UK, the next batch of Government data available to the MCIA, the motorcycle industry trade association in the UK, is expected to show that a rebound is underway. It is also significant that data also shows that the total number of motorcycles on the road in the UK has remained stable at around 1.2m for
several years.
Show attendances are always a strong indicator of underlying market strength, and with increased numbers of consumers seen at the MCIA's Birmingham based Motorcycle Live in November, combined with the increase seen at Stoneleigh in January, the British market definitely appears to be locked into a long-term growth cycle.

Another record year for Ducati
In 2014 Ducati Motor Holding S.p.a. achieved a new sales record with 45,100 units sold, 2 percent more than in 2013, making this the fifth consecutive year of growth.
Ducati attribute this increase in part to the introduction of new models. With the introduction of the new Monster 1200 and Monster 821, Monster family sales rose by 31 percent, with 16,409 new bikes sold. The Superbike family, thanks to the introduction of the 899 Panigale (which scored a +74 percent sales success with 5,806 units sold), enjoyed an overall growth of 12 percent, with a total of 9,788 bike units in 2014.
North American sales remained static compared to 2013, with Mexico experiencing 8 percent growth. The United States continues to be Ducati's top market, with 8,804 units sold. Sales in South America increased considerably, especially in Brazil (+ 74% percent 1,174 bikes sold), due to the expansion of the dealership network in that country and the market introduction of the full model range with local CKD production.
In Europe sales were slightly down (-3 percent with 19,743 units sold overall); Ducati attribute this to challenging conditions in several markets. Sales in Italy were especially disappointing, down by -14% with 4,284 units sold. Conversely, the UK reported a 16 percent growth in unit sales (2,742).
Growth was also seen in Asia, where Ducati achieved a sales record (+11 percent with 5,787 units sold). Performance was also strong in Thailand (+22 percent with 3,057 units sold) and China, where sales volumes almost doubled (+97 percent).
Ducati also succeeded in boosting sales in Australia (+13 percent with 2,132 units sold) and slightly increased its performance in Japan (+1% with 2,558 units sold).

Gas Gas suspends production
The storied history of the motorcycle industry in Catalonia took another turn last week - probably for the worse.
Gas Gas Motos Chairman Yariv Gilat announced that, pending bank approval of a debt restructuring plan, the company has had to suspend production at its factory near Girona in North Eastern Spain.
The company says that it has been working on a plan that includes new shareholder investment to support the company's growth, but that "the banks have delayed their answer and forced us to start some legal actions in order to protect the company and push the process forward.
"As part of this process, we had to stop production during the past days, so there will probably be delays of new bikes and spare parts".
It has been no secret that Gas Gas has been struggling in recent years, and Gilat has been honest enough to admit that Gas Gas has been "facing many challenges ... the company has substantial financial debts from previous years that affected our day to day operations in all aspects.
"I am confident that without having a long-lasting solution we will continue to fail in fulfilling our business plan. The company with its shareholders are doing the best to close this restructuring agreement as soon as possible in order to immediately resume our production activities".
Last year, the Catalan government agreed to provide Gas Gas with €2 million to fund the plan, including acquisition of new technology to improve their two and four stroke engine production. That decision followed a €4 million investment by an international consortium a year earlier.
Last year, it was announced that Gas Gas would merge with Ossa and re-launch that brand, having previously agreed to share production facilities and personnel. Ossa was re-launched in 2009, three decades after its closure, and were believed to be producing around 800 trials motorbikes. At this time it is unclear as to whether or not Ossa production has also been suspended, but it looks very likely that it has.
Gas Gas itself was founded in 1985, so was hoping to celebrate its 30th anniversary this year. It is estimated that the company was producing some 9,000 bikes per year as recently as 2012/13, exporting to over 50 countries and generating some 500 direct and indirect jobs in Catalonia.

KTM sold 158,760 units in 2014, which was up by +28.2 percent on their 2013 performance, with revenue +20.7 percent at €864.6 million.
Claiming the title of "fastest growing motorcycle brand in the world" for themselves, the performance includes KTM and Husqvarna branded units and those made in India, as well as at their headquarters factory in Austria.
The company says that it invested around €85 million in its Mattighofen and Munderfing facilities last year, substantially more than in 2013, expanding capacity and employment - at year end, KTM say they were employing 2,143 people in the group worldwide, their highest ever.
The company is forecasting an EBIT of over €75 million for their 2014 financial year, which would be +37 percent over 2013.

POLARIS Industries has expanded its motorcycle portfolio, which already includes both the Victory and Indian brands, with the acquisition of the electric motorcycle business of Brammo Inc. In addition, Polaris is acting as a leading investor in a recapitalization of Brammo that enables the company to focus exclusively on the design, development and integration of electric vehicle powertrains. Polaris will utilize the assets acquired to begin manufacturing electric motorcycles in the second half of 2015 at its Spirit Lake, Iowa facility.

KTM sets new production record
KTM say that annual unit production at their Mattighofen, Austria based factory exceeded 100,000 for the first time in 2014.
At 9 a.m.
on December 17th, a 2015 model year KTM 1190 Adventure rolled off the
assembly line to become the 100,000th motorcycle produced there in the
calendar year, taking total production to more that 1.2 million vehicles
since the facility started production in 1999.
In November the company had announced that it had sold 115,731 bikes (+29.1 percent) at an increase in revenue to €644.8 m EUR (+20.4 percent) with EBIT of +34 percent at €61.3 m. for the first three quarters of their financial year - the highest nine month sales and revenue performance in the company’s history.
KTM say this gave them an 8.4 percent market share in Europe for the period, with the "the successful launch of the new 1290 SuperDuke and the sales start of
the new Husqvarna model range among the factors that were crucial to our success".

Yamaha to establish a joint venture factory in Nigeria
Yamaha Motor Co. Ltd. has announced a new joint agreement to establish a motorcycle manufacturing and sales company in Nigeria. Factory operations are scheduled to commence in summer 2015.
The new company, called CFAO Yamaha Motor Nigeria Ltd. (CYMNG), is a joint venture between Yamaha Motor and CFAO - a French company, specialised in distribution of major international brands in Africa and part of the Toyota Tsusho Group.
The two companies will make equal investment contributions towards a start-up capital of one million dollars. The factory is to cover an area of 2,790 m2, and will be constructed on a site owned by CFAO in Lagos, the former capital and Nigeria's biggest city. The factory is expected to employ 200 people and produce 70,000 motorcycles by 2018.
In 1980, Yamaha Motor established a motorcycle factory in Nigeria that carried out manufacture and sale of motorcycles; however, in 2005 Yamaha pulled out of production at the factory due to a decline in the market, and have since been selling motorcycles imported from Japan or India through local dealerships. This joint venture represents Yamaha Motor’s second foray into the Nigerian market.
The population of Nigeria is currently 170 million, and explosive growth in the population and economy have contributed to growth of the motorcycle market to reach 1.3 million units in 2013. Moreover, the market is anticipated to grow in scale to 1.8 million units by 2020 as individual demand increases to supplement use of taxis, which currently accounts for 70% of demand. With advance ticket applications up by +20 percent, the 20th annual GB Motorcycle Trade Expo looks set to again be the largest dealer event of the year in Europe.
Organised by the publishers of British Dealer News, one of Europe's leading national motorcycle industry dealer magazines, some 150 exhibitors will see the show returning to a favourite former venue - the Stoneleigh Park exhibition near Coventry, UK.
Among those exhibitors Italian apparel specialist Alpinestars will be unveiling their new Spring Technical Collection and newly launched 'Oscar' Collection of heritage-inspired clothing and its 'Nucleon' back protector range.
Leading British apparel and accessories vendor Oxford Products will be giving a debut to its Oxford 'Tracker', a portable battery powered GPS tracking system. Operated by smartphone, tablet or computer, the company claims it is the "simplest and most cost-effective way to fit GPS to any vehicle".
These are just two of the many hundreds of new-for-2015 products and product range updates that will be on show at Europe's largest and longest established motorcycle trade-only event.

Organised by the publishers of British Dealer News, one of Europe's leading national motorcycle industry dealer magazines, some 150 exhibitors will see the show returning to a favourite former venue - the Stoneleigh Park exhibition near Coventry, UK.
Among those exhibitors Italian apparel specialist Alpinestars will be unveiling their new Spring Technical Collection and newly launched 'Oscar' Collection of heritage-inspired clothing and its 'Nucleon' back protector range.
Leading British apparel and accessories vendor Oxford Products will be giving a debut to its Oxford 'Tracker', a portable battery powered GPS tracking system. Operated by smartphone, tablet or computer, the company claims it is the "simplest and most cost-effective way to fit GPS to any vehicle".
These are just two of the many hundreds of new-for-2015 products and product range updates that will be on show at Europe's largest and longest established motorcycle trade-only event.

NAD S.L., the Spanish company that makes the Shad brand of seats and top cases, has just celebrated its 40th anniversary with news about a new programme of "comfort seats" with an integral heating system.
The company say that only the best materials have been used to resist weather conditions and staining. The heating system has two operating options, via the battery or the battery and the key, providing a uniform, thermic heat distribution and quick heating in two positions at 36 and 42 degrees.
The advanced design includes waterproof, sealed seams , a pressure relief tunnel, air outlet, an impact resistant base, 3D mesh and a polyurethane cushion and foam. More comfort is provided by pressure redistribution through increasing the contact surface.

THE Sahara OutDry, developed for the 2015 Forma boots xcollection in cooperation with Inuteq, incorporates its patented Cooling Boot system, which Forma say is the first motorcycle boot which cools itself simply by using water.
The company says this revolutionary system keeps feet cool and dry with the utmost performance and comfort level ensured. Temperature regulation is based on the process of evaporation, which is activated by adding a limited amount of water (max. 20ml) to the tank at the rear of the boot. The higher the external temperature and the airflow intake, and the lower the humidity level, the greater the overall effect for a cooling capacity that ranges from 5deg C to 15deg C, and lasts from 8 to 72 hours. The boot has front and rear vented material inserts, with ceramic finish.
The Sahara OutDry has all the classic characteristics of the Forma Touring OutDry range. The new and innovative OutDry system includes the use of a waterproof membrane, breathable and 3D laminated directly to the upper to avoid rain or snow penetrating the boot. The boot also features a full grain leather upper and personalised Forma double-density rubber sole with a the rear reflective insert.
Overall comfort and fit are assured due to front and back inserts, which also give added comfort to the shin and calf areas, the Velcro and zip closure, as well as padded memory foam. For safety the boot features externally vented plastic ankle protection, gear pad protection in polyurethane, and internal shin and ankle TPU moulded plastic protections.
The new Terra Adventure/Enduro/Quad/ATV riding boot has a personalised sole designed, engineered and developed for Adventure and Enduro riding, made from an extra grip rubber and stitched like traditional motorcycle boots.
Externally there is injection-moulded protective plastics in critical areas like the gear change, ankle and heel areas. Inside the boot, ankles and shins are further protected by TPU moulded plastic and memory foam padding. The upper is full grain oil treated leather, which has a rear reflective insert for increased visibility and a practical adjustable Velcro closure in the calf area. The boot is equipped with Forma Drytex tubular lining that guarantees waterproofness and breathability.

Advance ticket applications +20 percent for GB Motorcycle Trade Expo

Celebrating its 20th anniversary in two weeks, it looks like being a great year for exhibitors at this year's annual GB Trade Expo.
Organised by the publishers of British Dealer News, one of Europe's leading motorcycle industry dealer magazines, some 150 exhibitors will benefit from a post-recession growth in attendance that started some three years ago, and sees advance ticket applications currently running at 20 percent up on the same time last year.
Now being staged at a favourite former venue for the event (Stoneleigh Park near Coventry), the GB Trade Expo is both Europe's largest and longest established motorcycle trade-only event, and is bound to benefit this year from the strong growth now being seen in the UK new motorcycle registrations data released by the MCIA - the UK's motorcycle industry trade association..New registrations were up by +16.8 percent in November (5,020 units) and +8.8 percent for October (6,477 units), representing the ninth consecutive month of UK market growth. For the period January to November 2014 UK motorcycle registrations were +11.7 percent at 86,689 units, compared to +0.5 percent (77,629 units) at the same stage of 2013.
In total PTW registration terms, November was +14.5 percent (at 5,795 units), while October was +6.5 percent (7,445 units). This sees an increase of +10.2 percent for the first eleven months of the year (96,723 units).
With Suzuki among those added to the exhibitor line-up recently Andy Mayo, Sales Director, said: “we are delighted to welcome Suzuki on board in our 20th anniversary year. To attract a Japanese manufacturer back to Expo is a real coup and gives Expo a further dimension in attracting the Suzuki dealer network and prospective new dealers looking to complement or add to their 2015 line-ups. "More than 20 motorcycle and scooter brands will be represented at Stoneleigh Park, as well as new models and new opportunities for dealers to add to their bottom line".

Ducati
While the focus at Ducati has been on new model launches and further increases in sales and revenues, other news emerging from the company in recent weeks and months has included what is being described as an "historic investment and development" agreement between Ducati and their Workers in Bologna.
The "landmark agreement, reached thanks to the positive contribution of all the unions" will see Ducati investing 11.5 million euro in the next five years in the establishment of technologically advanced facilities for the production of stronger camshafts and crankshafts, consolidating the plant "as a world center of reference for machining excellence".
The agreement also includes Sunday working as part of an increase from 15 to 21 shifts per week.
Claudio Domenicali, CEO of Ducati said that "this agreement sets the stage for a major increase in productivity that makes for a more profitable investment and opens the way for new jobs".
Much of that extra production capacity will be taken up by the Ducati Scrambler. Some 40 years after the last Ducati Scrambler rolled off the production line back in the 1970s, December saw production of the first of the new Scramblers being completed six months after it was first shown to employees - the 'Icon' version of the new Scrambler will start to hit dealerships at the end of January.
Meanwhile, December also saw another landmark reached - with the one millionth Ducati to come off the production line at the historic Borgo Panigale factory. The custom edition Monster 1200 S was presented to 47 year old Ernesto Passoni, from near Milan, by Claudio Domenicali and Audi Group senior management at special ceremony in Milan on December 12th.
“Between 1946 and today we have designed, built and delivered one million dreams that have become reality to Ducatisti”, stated Claudio Domenicali. “Our strength is in the exceptional work that all of the Ducati employees carry out so efficiently on a daily basis, contributing to making our bikes beautiful, unique and desirable. To deliver the millionth bike produced directly into the hands of a passionate Ducatista is an incredible feeling and an incentive to continue along our growth path”.
Dutch market
Dutch market +12.1 percent in 2014
According to final figures released by RAI, BOVAG and RDC | CBS Mobility, sales of new motorcycles were up by + 12.1 percent in The Netherlands in 2014, with scooters also seeing an increase in popularity.
In 2014 10,354 new motorcycles were sold in The Netherlands (compared to 9239 units in 2013), with the trade association that represents the Dutch motorcycle industry saying that "the increase is partly due to the cautious recovery of consumer confidence, which saw many motorcyclists last year investing in a number of new models that were successfully launched onto the Dutch market, and the better weather (compared to many recent spring seasons in particular) which clarly also had a favorable effect on the propensity to buy".
Nearly one in seven of the new models sold last year was a scooter model (1,369 units, 3.5 percent more than in 2013). In addition another 445 three-wheel motor scooters were registered - such as the Piaggio MP3 and Peugeot Metropolis (compared to 233 new ones in 2013).
The top 3 best selling motorcycle brands in The Netherlands were the BMW (1863 units, 17.9% market share), Yamaha (1336 units, 12.9%) and Honda (1300 units, 12.5%).
