With eight models in the top 20 sellers list, it is no surprise that BMW is total PTW sales market share leader for the first six months of the year in its home market, having sold 16,856 units for a 16.85 percent market share (up by +0.43 percent in unit terms over the 16,784 they sold in the first six months of 2015, when they scored a 17.47 percent market share).

BMW sets new sales record for first half of 2016
BMW Motorrad closed the first half of 2016 (January – June inclusive) with a new sales record for the fourth time in succession. They supplied 80,754 motorcycles and maxi scooters to customers worldwide as of June 2016 (78,418 units in first half of 2015, +3.0 percent).
At 14,993 units (compared to 15,490 in June 2015), sales in the month of June were -3.2 percent compared to June 2015.
Heiner Faust, BMW Motorrad Head of Sales and Marketing: “As of June 2016 we were able to set our fourth six-month record in succession, at the same time supplying more than 80,000 motorcycles and maxi scooters to our customers by the middle of a year. Based on this positive development, we will now strive to achieve another sales record for the year as a whole.”
The company says that the strongest growth stimuli are mainly coming from the major European motorcycle markets of Spain (+22.6 %), Italy (+6.9 %) and France (+5.6 %). The smaller markets of South Eastern Europe also saw “pleasing growth. The Chinese market in particular is continuing to show considerable growth potential for BMW Motorrad with a dynamic increase in sales. As compared to the equivalent period of the previous year, sales increased by 74.3 % to 2,388 units. Sales in Thailand (+62.6 %) and Japan (+10.4 %) were also well above the previous year”.
Germany remains the traditionally largest market for BMW Motorrad. With 13,792 (+2.0%) units sold, BMW Motorrad is the overall market leader there. In the relevant segment over 500 cc capacity, BMW Motorrad also leads the market in Spain, Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands, Russia, Brazil and South Africa.
The world's most popular travel enduro, the R 1200 GS, remains unrivalled as the top-selling BMW Motorrad model. Now in its fourth year of sales, supplies increased as compared to the previous year by 3.8 % to 14,630 vehicles. Demand for the sibling model, the R 1200 GS Adventure, has likewise continued to increase in what is now its third year of sales. 11,732 (+12.5 %) units were supplied in the first six months of the year.
Indeed, 44.5 % of all Boxer GS motorcycles were ordered in the Adventure variant this year.
On third and fourth position are the Adventure model S 1000 XR (5,480 units) and the Supersports bike S 1000 RR (5,291 units), both of them powered by high-performance 4-cylinder BMW engines.
The touring classic R 1200 RT (5.123 units) follows in fifth place, followed by the custom bike R nineT (4.629 units). Now enjoying a cult status, this classic Boxer motorcycle has far surpassed expectations in terms of its sales figures.
Demand for the C 650 maxi scooter is also well above the previous year. As of June, 5,259 units (+73.2 %) were sold of the new edition of the two premium scooters. In addition to this, 447 BMW C evolution electric scooters were supplied in the same period (+1.4 %).
As Heiner Faust says: “In spite of a much tougher competitive environment, our two top-sellers, the R 1200 GS and GS Adventure, are asserting themselves very impressively on the market. All other new models of the last two years are also contributing to sales success. Our sporty S models S 1000 XR and S 1000 RR have made it to third and fourth position in our sales ranking. And the C 650 maxi scooter - launched at the turn of the year - is going down extremely well with our customers. Nonetheless, trade is being solidly supported by our attractive model portfolio as a whole.”
In the second half of the year, BMW Motorrad expects the sound level of demand for current BMW products to continue. At the same time, additional stimuli will be provided by the second model of the BMW “Heritage” world of experience, the new R nineT Scrambler (market launch from September 2016), the new G 310 R (market launch from October 2016) and attractive model facelifts in the Boxer and F series.

INTERMOT 5th October
18:00 hrs, Dealer Lounge
International Dealer News is pleased to announce that it is again collaborating with INTERMOT to present the “International Night” business networking reception at 18:00 hrs on the Trade Day, Wednesday October 5th.
An established and popular opportunity for exhibitors to meet with their importer/distributors and key dealers, it will be staged, as usual, at the Dealer Lounge Business Centre of the Koelnmesse exhibition centre, in the Business District off the main boulevard between halls 4 and 5.
The show is open to the media on Tuesday October 4th, with Wednesday October 5th being the International Trade Day, and will be open to all visitors Thursday October 6th to Sunday October 9th.
Since the move to Cologne from Munich in 2006, this will be the second time that INTERMOT has promoted a specific International Trade Visitor Day, and with 2014 having been judged a success, this is now set to be a permanent feature of the INTERMOT schedule, with consumers only able to gain access on the Trade Day by exhibitor invitation.
Promoted by International Dealer News, and hosted by INTERMOT and the show’s sponsors, International Night is unique in the international motorcycle industry - the only ‘meet & greet’ business reception specifically for international industry professionals of all kinds.
The ‘Cologne’ Show has always been regarded as the world’s primary international motorcycle industry expo, and with the backing of International Dealer News and worldwide exhibitor and trade visitor footprint that is expected to reach at least 68 international markets and over 55,000 trade visitors in total (43 percent of them from outside Germany), this is a unique opportunity to meet colleagues from the industry in a relaxed environment as the show closes (at 18:00 hours) on the special Trade Visitor day.
In addition to International Dealer News, the Business District is being supported by other motorcycle industry trade magazines in Europe - such as World of Bike and Bike und Business in Germany, British Dealer News in the UK, L’Officiel in France, Moto Dealer News (Italy) and Moto Taller (Spain).
The Business District provides exclusive exhibition space for vendors who only want to meet other professionals in the international motorcycle industry, and provides facilities of all kinds for professional visitors, such as being able to make meeting appointments away from the exhibition booths.
Additional trade initiatives operated by INTERMOT include the Dealer Card, which provides show access privileges, and the online Matchmaking365 service, which is an expo visit experience optimiser – it enables trade visitors to gain an overview of the suppliers of selected product groups in the run-up to the fair, establish valuable business contacts and place targeted meeting requests.

BMW
BMW to open its own manufacturing site in Brazil
BMW is to open its own motorcycle production site at Manaus, Brazil, at the end of 2016.
The new facility will create around 170 jobs with planning already going ahead for the production of more than 10,000 BMW motorcycles in 2017 for the Brazilian market, and is expecting significant volume growth in the market by assembling the new BMW G 310 R locally.
Eight other models will be produced in Manaus in addition to the entry-level model in the under 500 cubic capacity segment. The new production site replaces the current contract manufacturing being conducted by Dafra Motos in their plant in Manaus. BMW says it was agreed with Dafra that their production will be terminated this summer.
BMW states that Brazil represents a motorcycle market of strategic importance. With the new plant BMW Motorrad is positioning itself in a growing market environment and is expanding its involvement in Brazil. “With our global growth strategy we are opening up emerging markets such as Brazil. The G 310 R plays a key role in winning over new enthusiastic target groups for BMW Motorrad”, says Stephan Schaller, General Director of BMW Motorrad.
The company claims that it is currently the market leader in 27 countries in the premium segment over 500cc, and that it is set to continue growing sustainably and profitably. “The model initiative continues to advance and the worldwide sales network will be expanded significantly. The aim is to sell 200,000 units per year by 2020. The BMW Group is continuing to extend its involvement in the existing markets and is above all tapping new markets in Asia and South America. Further special focus is being placed on urban mobility”.
The BMW Group Plant Berlin will take on the lead plant function for establishing the new motorcycle production plant in Manaus. “At the BMW Group we place emphasis on international manufacturing sites in order to reinforce our market position further. With the start of production in Manaus, the BMW Group Plant Berlin is looking forward to supporting the international production network and the colleagues there.
BMW thanks its Brazilian partner Dafra for the good working relationship in the past years. Dafra Motos has been building BMW motorcycles in Manaus since 2009.

Yamaha's Yard Built
Yard Built gets the iron treatment -
Moto di Ferro's XV950 'Speed Iron'
Yamaha's latest Yard Built creation is a “true Italian beast”, a tracker style build with understated design, showing true metallurgy craftsmanship. The Moto di Ferro Yard Built XV950 'Speed Iron' is the brainchild of Italian builder Marco Lugato.
Marco is one of those builders who has had oil in the blood from a very early age, first riding off-road and then as a professional road racer, his credentials are without question. After a career in racing followed by some years honing his craftsmanship in various workshops, Moto di Ferro (Iron Motorcycle) was born in 2009 as a custom house to “build the motorcycles that Marco dreamed of”.
The collaboration with Yard Built came about following an encounter at Wheels & Waves between Marco and Yamaha Motor Europe's Product Manager Shun Miyazawa and Marketing Co-ordinator Cristian Barelli.
"As we met and talked with Marco in Biarritz it was clear we shared the same passion and love for motorcycles," commented Cristian Barelli. "One of the most important aspects for us when considering Moto di Ferro for this collaboration was that Marco doesn't consider this to be just a one-off machine, but a concept he can build, based on the XV950, for multiple customers. Marco has shown the maximum expression for him of the XV950 and I'm really happy with 'Speed Iron'. It has a clear Moto di Ferro design whilst retaining the simplicity and performance of the XV950, it's a beautiful bike that is still fun and rewarding to ride - and potentially available for a wide audience of Yamaha riders to own."
The concept for 'Speed Iron' comes from Marco's passion for speed. He wanted to create a motorcycle with strong design statements combined with soft lines. Thick tyres were important, but not at the expense of rideability. Those thick tyres were wrapped around beautiful Borrani rims, with the front suspension getting swapped out for VMAX forks.
A hand-made aluminium tank and rear seat unit take the weight down and complement the hand-made aluminium side panels. The front brake discs were increased to 320mm and benefit from VMAX calipers for proper stopping power. An Acewell odometer provides just the right amount of data for the rider and an Arrow exhaust adds the soundtrack.
Various other pieces complete the look, including Tarozzi footpegs and LSL dumbbells. A hand-made rear frame sets the clear lines tone, and an aftermarket headlight and stop lights integrated into the turn signals keep everything super clean.
The great news for XV950 owners is that Marco plans to make various parts from the 'Speed Iron' build available so they can create their own Italian custom, or hand over their XV950 to him and have it made for them.

NEXX Helmets
Taking it to the ‘NEXX’ level
NEXX Helmets has introduced its newest collection of X.R2 sports full-face helmets. “Two exceptional new graphic designs are offered; the “FUEL”, a fast and sporty looking design, offered in seven colourways to match anyone’s taste, and “VIRUS”, an edgy design with original “vital signs” on the sides has a nice metallic flake to it when exposed to the sunshine, surely to be appreciated by many race fans”.
The two top vents are redesigned to increase airflow and reduce noise levels, carrying more fresh air directly to the forehead and interior of the helmet. The X.R2 spoiler and aerodynamic profile reduce turbulence at high speeds. A race-ready flat face-shield has posts for tear-offs and Pinlock insert (both sold separately).
The Easy Lock shield is more soundproof and airtight. Tear shaped, the X.R2 represents NEXX's new X-Matrix technology, a process that combines multi-axial fibreglass, 3D organic fibres, special Aramid fibres and carbon reinforcement. The result is said to be a super strong and lightweight shell, 35% stronger for extension and bending resistance than normal fiberglass.

BMW
BMW’s R 5 Hommage – “keeping it simple”
BMW launched its legendary R5 80 years ago – a bike that, at the time, represented a significant technological development that was to influence motorcycle construction right through to the 1950s. Inspired by the 500cc factory racing machine of 1935, it was one of the ground-breaking sports motorbikes of the late 1930s, featuring a new concept in lightweight frames among its notable firsts.
To mark the 80th anniversary of the BMW R 5, BMW Motorrad honoured this icon of its two-wheel heritage at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este 2016, Italy, with a special model: the BMW R 5 Hommage.
At the core there is an original 500 cc two-cylinder engine provided by motorcycle enthusiast Sebastian Gutsch. This Boxer engine was damaged in a race and provided the starting point for creating the BMW R 5 Hommage.
As befits a custom bike, the Hommage bike was elaborately hand-crafted from scratch. Ronny and Benny Noren were called upon to produce the parts according to the specifications of the BMW Motorrad Design Team.
The two-cylinder 4-stroke Boxer engine of the R 5 was completely newly designed at the time and had an output of 24 bhp at 5,500 rpm. The valve drive was taken care of by two camshafts powered by a timing chain. Thanks to the likewise newly designed frame made of electrically welded oval tubing, the light R 5 reached a top speed of 135 km/h, making it almost as fast as the R 17 with 33 bhp 750 cc, which is one of the reasons it was so frequently used for racing, just like the engine selected for the BMW R 5 Hommage, which was damaged during a race.
The steering head is slightly more tilted to give the R 5 Hommage greater presence and expressive stance, while at the same time underscore the fact that it belongs to the custom bike world. As far as the frame is concerned, the focus here was on the oval shaped tubes which were such a striking feature of the original. Together the frame and fuel tank draw a continuous line from the steering head to the rear wheel hub, giving the side view a touch of elegance. The hand-made steel rear fender perpetuates the minimalistic layout.
A particularly defining feature in terms of the appearance of the original R 5 was the telescopic fork - new at the time - whose characteristic fork covers were aerodynamically shaped at the level of the headlamp.
The heart of the BMW R 5 rests within the minimalist proportions of the Hommage bike. The technical highlight of the engine is the specially developed supercharger, which in the BMW R 5 Hommage now significantly boosts the output of the original 500 cc power unit of 26 bhp to achieve a contemporary accurate level.
A completely newly built stainless steel exhaust system ensures that this increase in power is appropriately reflected in terms of sound.
Other contemporary accents are provided by the new rear wheel suspension, the modern piston brake system and the elaborately designed front and rear wheel hub. The latter combines the brake system and spoke mount in a single formal unit - a detailed reflection of the minimalistic concept embodied by the BMW R 5 Hommage.

MV Agusta and Pirelli
“Diablo Brutale” Made-in-Italy special
MV Agusta and Pirelli have collaborated on the creation of a one-off special edition Brutale 800 to celebrate the collaboration between the two Italian brands, selection of Pirelli as the OE tyre for the Brutale 800, and Pirelli’s recent Diablo Rosso III tyre launch.
Dubbed “Diablo Brutale”, it is “a tribute to the design, craftsmanship, sportiveness and high technology of the latest Supersport tyre of the DIABLO family”.
MV Agusta and Pirelli have been working together for several decades, and Pirelli has been MV’s sole OE tyre supplier since 2011, and the “Diablo Brutale” is designed as a “Made-in-Italy” showcase.
“Diablo Brutale” is described by MV as presenting “an attractive matt black colour, which is interrupted only by a luminous red as a reference to the tyre logo. MV Agusta has decided to pay homage to the new Pirelli tyre through some graphical elements. The DIABLO ROSSO III logo appears on the tank’s side, while the typical ‘thunder’ groove of the tread pattern, which represents a tyre’s trademark, appears on the tank as well as on the front fender, plus both sides of the tail. Both the Pirelli logo and the red “D” of DIABLO appear next to the MV Agusta logo on the top of the tank.
“Pirelli has decided to equip this special with a set of DIABLO ROSSO III with a red colour dedicated graphic, just like the details that give the Brutale the unique spirit of the Diablo.
“With the new Brutale 800, MV Agusta questioned the style, engine, equipment and chassis of the previous model with a unique goal: giving birth to the best Brutale ever. The same goal was achieved by Pirelli with the development of the DIABLO ROSSO III, the direct descendant of the renowned and highly rated DIABLO ROSSO™ II, which raises the bar of sport riding even higher than the previous model and extends the qualities of its predecessor, strengthening its features in terms of handling and grip, with long lasting performance”.

Ducati
Ducati Pikes Peak “Race to the Clouds” replica kit
Ducati North America has announced a new limited edition Multistrada 1200 Pikes Peak 100th anniversary replica kit to celebrate the centennial of the historic “Race to the Clouds” in Colorado.
Ducati, the “official motorcycle partner” of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC), is honouring the centennial of this historic race as well as commemorating its six PPIHC victories and current course record by making 400 of these kits available with a 2016 Multistrada purchase.
The Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb is the second oldest motor sports race in America and a long-standing tradition in Colorado Springs and the Pikes Peak region. First competed at in 1916, this year marks the 100th anniversary and 94th running of the “Race to the Clouds.”
Sometimes dangerous, often controversial and always difficult, the route up the mountain is a tortuous 12.42 mile, 156 turn challenge that starts at 9,390 feet and finishes at the 14,115 foot summit of “America’s Mountain”, as Pikes Peak is known.
A combination of automotive, three-wheel and motorcycle test, as the drivers climb towards the summit, the thin air slows reflexes, saps muscle strength and robs engines of 30% of their power at the summit. The current record is 08:13.878, set by Sebastien Loeb in 2013.
Earning multiple victories at the race since 2010, the Ducati Multistrada 1200 Pikes Peak is being described as “one of the most significant race bikes that represents Ducati North America’s racing heritage.” Created specifically for the centennial anniversary of the PPIHC and exclusively for North America, production will be limited to 400 replica kits – with each kit included with the purchase of a new 2016 Ducati Multistrada 1200 Pikes Peak special from a US authorized Ducati dealerships.
With race-inspired looks, the motorcycle is differentiated by dedicated components including adjustable high-performance Öhlins suspension and a Ducati Performance exhaust by Termignoni. The kit is being provided free of charge to all current owners of this model and is included free of charge with any new purchases.

Touratech
DESTINO Adventure combination boot-in-boot concept
Having successfully entered the riding suits, helmets and gloves markets, German adventure tour specialist Touratech is now bringing out its own touring boots as the next step in its range of in-house developed motorcycle gear.
The DESTINO Adventure is said to combine a high level of protection with numerous comfort features, and what Touratech says are several completely new functions. As with its approach to the rest of its apparel range, the DESTINO is a combination product - a touring and enduro boot, a sporty motorcycle boot and leisure shoe all in one, with functional and safety features combined in a novel integrated concept.
Rather than being geared to one particular use, the company says the design considerations focused on the rider’s needs in a different range of situations - reflecting the mixed-use that adventure tour riders subject their machines to, and all their accessory and apparel products too.
Made from waxed, full-grain leather, the boot is reinforced with protectors - an impact-resistant polyurethane toe cap and heel protector with a metal cap that can be screwed onto the tip of the boot supplied for off-road riding, and a plastic shin guard protects against frontal impacts.
A robust insert in the sole effectively prevents the foot twisting and bending in a fall, but at the same time is said to be supple enough to allow the foot to roll while walking. The oil and petrol-resistant rubber sole has a chunky tread to provide a secure footing on more slippery surfaces.
Features include an extra-wide opening and three rugged buckles, which can be precisely adjusted in length thanks to a finely pitched adjustment system. On the shaft of the boot, a soft top edge made of Cordura keeps the wet and dirt out; the outer shoe is deliberately not made to be waterproof. This is because the range of uses for the DESTINO Adventure includes off-road touring. Special design solutions such as a stitched-through sole make it impossible to use a membrane in the outer shoe, and a membrane installed directly beneath the upper material would prevent the boot drying quickly if it ever gets soaked.
Instead the waterproof and breathable climate membrane is integrated into the inner shoe. Patented OutDry technology means it can be worn separately as a fully functional, washable shoe in its own right, as well as providing the internal comfort and weather proofing for the boot.
A retractable, coated stainless steel cable concealed behind the top buckle means the boot can be attached to the motorcycle while just using the shoe. The anti-bacterial footbed can be renewed, if necessary, or replaced with an optionally available comfort insole.
Available from the spring of 2016, Touratech is claiming a world-first for this concept, saying it marks a next logical step with a multi-purpose approach that first appeared with their Compañero touring suit, namely high-spec riding gear system components that can also be used as functional outdoor clothing - apparel designed for the destination as well as the journey.

SIP Scootershop
SIP opens new facility
Over 1,400 enthusiasts attended the grand opening of German specialist’s SIP Scootershop new 6,000 sq m headquarters facility in May.
Highlights included in-house dyno testing, tours of the extensive inventory in the new warehouse, demonstrations of the firm’s state-of-the art order processing and dispatch systems, music, fun and food!
Founders Alex Barth and Ralf Jodl, Vespa enthusiasts to the core, started out by making their own parts in response to what was poor availability of the items they wanted at the time, and by 1994 they had become a fixture at scooter runs and brought their first catalogue out in 1996.
The company has grown almost continuously since it opened for business 22 years ago, and has expanded and moved several times until now being able to create their own bespoke facility dedicated to the scooter and related parts and performance markets.
Visitors came from as far away as Russia, France, Italy, Vietnam and even India, and Ralf, Alex and their dedicated team can be rightly proud of what they have achieved, and of the new architect designed palace of scooter loveliness that will serve their international customer base for years to come.
The company carries more than 24,000 scooter parts and lifestyle items in stock at any one time, and with a multi-lingual sales staff, the company is able to dispatch most orders on a same day basis.

World Ducati Week
2016 World Ducati Week concludes with a record-breaking attendance
The ninth edition of World Ducati Week, the international get-together of Ducati fans and enthusiasts at Misano, Italy, that is held every two years, has come to a close with a record-breaking attendance – some 81,000 people are said to have been there at some stage of the weekend.
Staged at the Misano World Circuit ”Marco Simoncelli” from Friday 1 to Sunday 3 July, Ducati say “the bikes and the fans were the true stars of this incredible event. In three days the crowd attendance for this ninth edition is estimated to be 25% up on the 2014 record, when around 65,000 people came to Misano.
“Ducati fans came to Italy’s Adriatic Riviera from all five continents, representing 66 countries throughout the world. 60% of the motorcyclists at WDW2016 came from Italy, with the remaining 40% confirming the strength and appeal of the Ducati brand all over the world: Europe, USA, Canada, Brazil, UAE, South Africa, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Japan and even Sri Lanka, Puerto Rico, Bahrein, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Guatemala, Angola and China, from where four people came to Misano on board Ducati Multistrada 1200 bikes.
“World Ducati Week 2016 confirmed the major evolution that Ducati has been going through over the last few years. The slogan for WDW2016 was “More than Red”, which means strong roots in the world of sportsbikes, but also new models for new segments, like the XDiavel, the new Ducati cruiser, the Multistrada 1200 Enduro and the new Scrambler Sixty2 400 and the Scrambler Flat Track Pro. These three recent additions to the Ducati range allowed the participants in WDW2016 to live new and unique experiences.
“The surface area figure in this record edition of WDW is also significant, with around 90,000 sqm of space occupied inside the Misano World Circuit, 80% up on the 2014 edition. This allowed more and more unique opportunities to be offered, such as the DRE Enduro, or the Scrambler Flat Track School, a course to learn how to slide safely on oval gravel tracks. There was also a massive presence of Scrambler bikes in the circuit, and the first ever Scrambler Reunion brought in more than 2000 ‘Scramblerists’ from all over the world. There was also more space for entertainment such as exhibitions and the celebration of the 90th anniversary of Ducati.
“Much attention was also paid to an eco-friendly management of the event. This is an important achievement for Ducati and the WDW, which received an ISO 20121 certificate, the first example of an event of its kind in the world of two wheels.
“The high point of the three intense and exciting days of WDW2016 came on Saturday 2 July, the day of maximum attendance. As well as the numerous activities on the weekend schedule, there were also two entertaining and exciting races reserved for Ducati MotoGP and Superbike riders of today and yesterday: the “Scrambler Flat Track Race by TIM” (held on Friday and won by Andrea Dovizioso) and the “Diavel Drag Race by Shell Advance” (held on Saturday and won by Scott Redding). The two races saw head-to-head competition between riders of the calibre of Casey Stoner (two-time MotoGP World Champion, in 2007 with Ducati), Andrea Dovizioso and Andrea Iannone (Ducati Team), Loris Capirossi (ex-MotoGP rider for Ducati), Chaz Davies (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati Superbike), Troy Bayliss (three-time World Superbike champion with Ducati), Regis Laconi (ex-factory Ducati rider and winner of the Drag Race in 2014), Scott Redding (OCTO Pramac Yakhnich) and Hector Barbera (Avintia Racing).
“On Saturday evening, CEO Claudio Domenicali and the Ducati riders greeted all the Ducatisti from the stage of the Santamonica stadium at Misano Adriatico, and then revealed the 1299 Panigale S Anniversario, a special, limited edition version of the Italian Superbike, created to mark the 90th anniversary of Ducati, which was on July 4. The stage then truly came to life with a spectacular rock concert by Italian legend Piero Pelù, who kept the crowd happy before making way for a live broadcast of the EURO2016 football match between Germany and Italy. At the same time there was also the traditional ‘Rustida’, the massive barbecue organised by the Adriatic Riviera lifeguards, where all the Ducati management help to grill and serve the classic ‘piadina’ to everyone present.
“As was to be expected, the ‘Closed Room’ with its sneak preview of the new 2017 Ducati SuperSport bike was a great success. Ducati enthusiasts and fans were even prepared to wait hours under the sun to enjoy this special and exclusive preview”.

BMW
BMW Intelligent Emergency Call system
BMW is launching an optional “Intelligent Emergency Call” system, which is intended to get help to the accident or emergency scene as fast as possible. Research has shown that in the event of an accident, a vehicle-integrated eCall system can make a big difference in response time – up to 40 to 50 percent faster.
The European Commission in charge of the trial on which these findings are based estimates that an eCall system could save up to 2,500 lives every year; also saving €26 billion in the process.
BMW was the first manufacturer to use eCall in Europe in its cars in 1999. In 2007, the BMW Group extended this safety system by establishing an intelligent and cross-border call centre infrastructure. From 2018, eCall will become mandatory for all new cars, and the company says that thanks to the synergy effects with its automotive division, the system is expected to be available for motorcycles the first time, as an option, from beginning of 2017.
In the case of an emergency or an accident, the intelligent eCall system, which is either automatically or manually triggered, sends out the position data, i.e. the coordinates of the motorcycle accident site, to the qualified BMW Call Centre to initiate the rescue chain. The current position, as well as information for determining the direction of travel, are transmitted to simplify locating the motorcyclist in hard-to-find locations such as motorway junctions.
eCall requires a connection to the mobile phone network in order to trigger the rescue chain. In the “intelligent emergency call” option, the connection is established via the permanently installed mobile communication unit. For the connection no specific mobile operator is required. All that is necessary is at least one operational mobile provider. The service will be made available in all European countries.
The emergency call is automatically triggered without time delay, sending a message to a qualified BMW Call Centre. The accident victim/rider is taken care of by the BMW Call Centre via audio connection until the emergency service arrives. Help is sent out in any case, even if there is no response. A display in the instrument cluster shows that the eCall has been initiated. An acoustic signal is also set off. In this case the rider cannot cancel the emergency call any more.
In this case the emergency call is only triggered after 25 seconds before sending a message to the BMW Call Centre. If no help is necessary after only a non-serious accident, the accident victim/rider has the opportunity of cancelling the emergency call at the press of a button. If the rider does not cancel, the rescue chain is initiated. A display in the instrument cluster shows that the eCall has been initiated. An acoustic signal is also set off.
The eCall can be triggered manually by pressing the SOS button on the right handlebar end, for example for calling help for other road users in need. A message is sent to the BMW Call Centre and a voice connection is established. A voice connection is mandatory if the eCall was triggered manually before further measures are initiated. Here too, the accident victim/rider is also given the opportunity to cancel the emergency call at the press of a button or by turning off the ignition. The intelligent emergency call can only be triggered manually when the motorcycle is stationary with the ignition on.
The emergency call is not triggered automatically in non-emergency situations - e.g. if the bike falls over in a stationary position or in accidents at low speeds with no other traffic user involved, a shock to the bike when riding over a pothole or while off-road riding (e.g. small jumps or riding over obstructions).
The “intelligent emergency call” option is located on the right side of the handlebar and is both ergonomic and compact. In addition to the cover-protected SOS button used for triggering or cancelling an emergency call, a microphone and loudspeaker have also been integrated.
Sensors on the motorcycle detect which event occurred. A crash sensor detects events such as collisions with another vehicle or crashing into an obstruction. A banking angle sensor detects high and low-siders, i.e. which position the motorcycle is in.
The intelligent emergency call system constitutes a premium service with international coverage. When a voice connection is made, the rider can communicate with the BMW Call Centre in his native language. This is a stand-alone feature, which is highly effective in an emergency situation. The optional “intelligent emergency call” will be rolled out in Germany first and then also introduced quickly in further European markets and models.

Kawasaki
Kawasaki waves goodbye to W-series
Some fifty years since its launch, Kawasaki has announced the end of the iconic W-series of four-stroke vertical twin motorcycles; the W800 “Final Edition” marks the end of an era.
With a limited number available for the 2017 season, fans and enthusiasts across Europe have a last chance to experience the contemporary descendant of the famous W-series that first emerged from the Kawasaki factory in Akashi, Japan, in the mid 1960s. Suitably christened the W800 “Final Edition”, the last model in the line is resplendent in its remarkable Candy Brown and Candy Sunset Orange paint scheme.
The W800, with its authentic retro look and feel, is considered by many to be a modern day classic. The clean and simple lines of the beautifully sculpted air-cooled, 4-stroke vertical twin motor displaces 773 cm3, complete with a bevel gear driven camshaft, contributing to the carefully considered heritage engineering approach and stunning visual appearance. Attention to detail abounds and gives the W800 an exquisite quality and nostalgic beauty, complete with its distinctive tank badge resembling that of the original W-series, highlighting the long-lasting heritage of the W800.
The family tree of the W800 and the W-series itself can be traced back to 1966 when Kawasaki introduced its “great grandfather”, the W1. Equipped with a robust and reliable 650cc engine and 50hp, the W1 was the very first large capacity, high performance four-stroke under the Kawasaki banner and turned out to be a true manufacturing milestone – especially in the American market, where it helped set the foundations for the brand in a huge, motorcycle-hungry market.
Echoing the lines and the engineering essence of the original W1, Kawasaki later introduced the W650 in 1998, which was enthusiastically embraced by a new legion of fans both young and old, proving that true style never really goes out of fashion.
Selecting retro overdrive, the Japanese manufacturer then introduced the W800 in 2011, extending the W-family line further still. All the generations of the W-series possess authentic quality and classic beauty, and Kawasaki has concentrated on delivering a mixture of high-tech with heritage in a seductive retro package throughout the modern W series. Now, sadly, the line must end as the current machine will not meet future European motorcycle regulations.
Celebrating over 50 years of the W-family, Kawasaki hopes this last-in-line “Final Edition” will highlight the heritage of the W800 once more and prove a fitting end to the W-series, according to the Corporate Planning Director for Kawasaki Motors Europe, Mr. Morihiro Ikoma.
“It’s never easy to say goodbye to an old friend, especially one as iconic as the W800. Paying homage to the W-series with this “Final Edition” is therefore a truly fitting end to a long and successful line of machines.”
