Better than just a "good start"?
Regular readers of this column will recall that the last edition (April/May) saw me unveil an IDN new motorcycle registrations guesstimated forecast of +3 percent (+/-2 percent) for the full year 2019.
This was based on an analysis of the 2016, 2017 and 2018 market data that said that the real growth rate for motorcycles in 2018 was probably lower than suggested by the ACEM data, at something like +3.12 percent (rather than the +9.89 percent officially reported).
Our thesis was that the 2016 growth was in reality more like +6.5 percent (rather than the official +13.27 percent), and for 2017 the 50,000 - 65,000 (IDN estimate) of 2016 Euro 3 pre-registered motorcycles actually sold "as new" by dealers in 2017 mean the market was likely in the region of +2.53 percent, rather than the officially reported -9.50 percent.
In percentage terms that was a radically different interpretation of market performance, and as I said at the time, while "the units are still the units" (the motorcycles concerned were sold and are on the road), the 2013 through 2018 five-year picture of +34.14 percent growth (255,534 additional new units sold) suggested a "much smaller but perfectly healthy and, importantly, sustainable annual rate of growth".
That trend led us to predict that 2019 growth would likely be a more realistic +3 percent growth for the year - which would still be an entirely acceptable outcome for 2019, especially in the face of the growing economic headwinds in markets such as Germany, Italy and the UK.
I went on to say that "while I don't recommend anybody yet start thinking that this year may see upper single digits of growth by year-end, let alone low double digits", the excellent start to 2019 is "units in the bag" for now and may, just may, point to another uptick in the rate of growth ahead.

Well, as reported in this edition of IDN, that early showing of good sales did continue. March was somewhere between acceptable and strong in most markets, despite some poor weather in some parts of Europe, and although May looks like it saw somewhat of a softening in some markets, April was strong in most markets, and set against the turbulence of the past decade, May wasn't too bad either despite some market jitters.
So, with more growth "in the bag" and a good chunk of the primary selling period bagged in several of the main markets, the 19 percent plus growth seen across the board in the first quarter (Internal Combustion Engine/ICE and electric motorcycles combined, all EU markets) may well by now be starting to transition from "good start" to sustainable upper single digit growth for the year as a whole as a worst case scenario.
Indeed, I think it can be said with some degree of confidence that the +9.89 percent growth reported for 2018 by ACEM may not just have reached, realised and matched this year, but that it may already be looking like a worst case scenario.
Although we don't have all the data in for May yet (or even April in some cases), with 5 of the 12 months already gone, typically representing nearly 50 percent of annual sales, high single digits of growth (8 or 9 percent?) may well be on the cards for the full year 2019.
I am always a conservative forecaster, in my own businesses as well as where market registration data is concerned. However, this is one of those occasions where I am so glad to be wrong.
I don't think it undermines my analysis of the real market performance seen in percentage terms in 2016, 2017 and 2018, because, as I said before, "the units are still the units", and my proposition was based simply in which column you put them in.
No, if anything like this trend continues, there really can only be one viable explanation. Namely that we are witnessing a genuine return to pretty significant growth in the popularity of motorcycles as a transport and leisure option of choice. Hurrah!
However, none of us should be trying to decide "how we are going to spend it" yet. As I often point out, before he left the motorcycle industry, Stephan Schaller, the former head of BMW Motorrad and of ACEM, once said that when we saw the registration numbers stabilise at approximately the same level as those seen before the financial crisis, then at that point we would still only have "half a recovery" as the lost sales from the 2008/2009 level to the point at which they levelled out (in the second half of 2014) still need to be made back.
The motorcycle market - the aftermarket parts, accessories and G&A vendor community - is notoriously short of investment capital, still. Which is why there has been so much consolidation and so many private equity buy-outs (see the news about Nolan and Shark on page 48 of this edition for example).
The lost profits will take years to get back into circulation, decades even, at what appears to be going to emerge as the 2019 level of growth. Whilst the majority of brands have survived, one way or another, most have done so through good housekeeping, and most are still underfunded in self-generated investment capital terms.
And don't let anyone run away with the assumption that it is E-bikes and the 'New Gen' riders who are proving to be our salvation. They are not. Not yet anyway. As the ACEM Q1 registration statistics show, given the hype and the level of investment going into the electric mobility sector, the levels of market take-up are still, actually, "shockingly" low. While recent research suggests that 47% of consumers would consider switching to some form of Electric Mobility for commuting in the future ('Pedelecs' mostly - 39% in Spain, 33% in Italy, 21% in Germany, 15% in France etc), such survey findings are still decades away from getting showroom doors swinging.

EU endorses European Motorcycle Training Quality Label
The European Commissioner for Transport, Violeta Bulc, has announced endorsement of the European Motorcycle Training Quality Label (EMTQL), encouraging riders "to embrace a responsible approach to motorcycling and to attend voluntary advanced safety training on a regular basis".
Commissioner Bulc pointed out that "Europe has some high-quality training schemes on offer" and that the EMTQL will help motorcyclists "to identify the very best motorcycle safety training courses available in Europe". The European Commissioner added: "We are grateful that the European Motorcycle Training Quality Label has been set up, responding to our call for voluntary commitments."
Stefan Pierer, President of ACEM, the European Association of Motorcycle Manufacturers, and CEO of KTM, said: "We are delighted that the European Motorcycle Training Quality Label has the support of the European Commissioner for Transport. This label, which is part of the sector's long-term safety strategy, will have a very positive impact on motorcycle safety across Europe."
The EMTQL is a certification scheme open to a wide range of organisations based in Europe offering advanced safety training. It was launched in 2015 by ACEM and DVR, the German Road Safety Council, with the aim to help motorcyclists to easily identify high-quality post-licence training programmes across Europe. Later on, the International Motorcycling Federation, FIM, joined the partnership and the European Transport Safety Council, ETSC, provided its endorsement.
To date, a total of 28 post-licence motorcycle training programmes have been certified in Sweden, France, Spain, the Netherlands, Austria and Germany, and further applications are undergoing evaluation.

Honda had twelve customised CB1000Rs from across Europe on display at the Wheels & Waves festival at Biarritz, France, in June to mark the 50th anniversary of the iconic CB750.

Polish new motorcycle registrations
Poland: new motorcycle registrations +53.09 % YTD
The latest data from the motorcycle industry trade association in Poland (PZPM) shows new motorcycle registrations at +39.00% for April (3,126 units), having been +76.98% in March (2,168 units) and running at +53.09% (6,647 units) for the first four months of 2019. The figures show that the improvement of the new motorcycle market in Poland since the summer of 2018 appears to be sustaining.
New moped sales are improving too, though comparisons with the early months of 2018 are unreliable due to the moped segment's 2017/2018 Euro 4 transition - YTD moped registrations in Poland are reported as +45.38% (5,603 units), putting total new PTWs in Poland at +49.46 YTD (12,250 units - the best since 2016).
However, new model registrations are only ever part of the story where the Polish market is concerned. Poland is an important market for pre-owned vehicles (from elsewhere in Europe) that are receiving their first domestic Polish registration; these machines provide valuable service, maintenance and PG&A income for Poland’s franchised and independent motorcycle shops and the vendors they buy from.
When the used motorcycles receiving their first registration in Poland are factored in, the total number of new and used PTWs sold was +6.62% in April (16,711 units) and are running at +24.19% for the YTD (38,707 units - the best since 2015).
For the full year 2018 overall total new PTW registrations at -30.67 percent (30,971 units) for the year. New and used PTW registrations were -7.53 percent (101,158 units) retaining Poland’s position as Europe’s 6th largest market.

The 2019 FIM International Six Days Enduro, the 94th edition of the event, is being staged at Portimao, Portugal, November 11-16. Over 650 riders from more than 30 nations will tackle more than 1,500 km of gruelling terrain and technical tests. Australia won in Chile in 2019. This will be the 13th time the event has been staged in Portugal since its inception in 1913. In 2020 it will move to Italy (Piedmont/Lombardy) for the first time since Sardinia in 2013.
KTM increased its market share to 12.3% in Q1 2019 with a registration increase of +22%, seeing growth in major markets such as Germany (+29%), France (+34%) and Spain (+20%). They were also up +30% in India. Contrary to initial estimates, the retail motorcycle market in Europe grew by around +20% in the first quarter.
Securing his third world crown, Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Colton Haaker (USA) won the 2019 FIM SuperEnduro World Championship at the fifth and final round of the series in Bilbao, Spain, in April, riding an FX 350. KTM's Cody Webb (USA) and Taddy Blazusiak (Poland) were second and third, with Husqvarna's Pol Tarres (Spain) fourth and Alfredo Gomez (Spain) fifth.
Record-breaking racer Zef Eisenberg survived a 195 mph scare to establish a new record for the Flying Mile at Pendine Sands in South Wales. Riding a specially made 400 bhp supercharged Suzuki Hayabusa that was built and prepared by Eisenberg’s MADMAX Racing Team, he set a two-way average of 182.40 mph on Saturday 6 April. The Flying Mile record was set by Sir Malcolm Campbell in 1927 at 174 mph in the famous Blue Bird car. Eisenberg raised that to 182.49 mph in a two-way-average flying-mile measurement that could have been higher if the engine had not blown up at a GPS recorded speed of 195 mph-plus.
Triumph Motorcycles has announced a new collaboration with UK industry experts such as Williams F1 Advanced Engineering and Integral Powertrain Ltd’s e-Drive Division, and Innovate UK, to develop specialist electric motorcycle technology which will provide significant input into potential future electric motorcycle offers from Triumph. This two-year project (TRIUMPH TE-1) also includes partnership work with Warwick University's world famous WMG (Warwick Manufacturing Group).
BMW Motorrad says it has seen sales continue to grow strongly, with year-to-date deliveries to the end of April 2019 up by +7.7% to 57,014 units. In April a total of 18,408 (+7.7%) BMW Motorrad motorcycles and maxi scooters were delivered to customers around the world.
Having already worked very successfully with the Kawasaki Racing Team and its riders, SHOWA has increased its commitment to the successful KRT World Superbike championship-winning team for 2019 by becoming a major sponsor as well as Technical Partner.

Motorcycles +19.2% in EU markets for 2019 first quarter
The most recent available new vehicle registration numbers from ACEM - the Brussels based international motorcycle industry trade association - show EU markets off to a good start in 2019, with motorcycle sales (Internal Combustion Engine/ICE and electric motorcycles) up +19.2% at 244,991 units for the first three months of the year.
Italy has been by far the largest market in Europe so far this year with 54,826 units registered for +18.7% growth over the 46,201 units registered in the first quarter of 2018.
Germany was second largest with 44,450 units registered for +23.3% growth; followed by France with 43,942 new units registered (+20.0%), Spain 37,255 units (+20.5%) and the UK 25,913 units (+10.3%).
Europe's 'Big Five' markets accounted for 84.24% of new motorcycles registered in Q1 (206,386 units).
The moped market in the EU (Internal Combustion Engine/ICE and electric motorcycles) has been growing by +30.1% in the first quarter (52,715 units), with France the largest market at 17,997 units for +78.2% growth, followed by the Netherlands, which has seen +46.0% growth (13,040 units), and Belgium (4,683 units, +35.4% growth).
The moped sector appears to be seeing growth following the negative effects of the Euro 4 transition, which came a year later than for motorcycles in winter 2017/2018.
E-motorcycle Q1 sales only 2,295 units
Within those figures, the impact of electric models remains modest. The largest E-motorcycle market in the EU in Q1 was France (581 units registered, +58.7%), followed by Germany (504 units, +191.3%), Spain (502 units, +62.5%), Italy (245 units, +67.8%), the Netherlands (150 units, +16.3%) and Austria (116 units, +152.2%). All other EU markets saw less than 100 new electric motorcycles registered in Q1 2019. There were a total of 2,295 electric units registered, a +78.6% increase over 1,285 units in Q1 2018.
Not surprisingly the lower value electric moped market is stronger in Europe in unit terms, with the market overall being +78.3% with 11,258 units registered. The largest single markets are France (3,726 units, +137.3%), Belgium (2,474 units, +81.1%), the Netherlands (2,448 units, +55.5%) and Spain (1,087 units, +18.3%), followed by Italy, Poland, Austria and Finland.
Most of the 'Non-Big Five' EU markets are mostly showing healthy growth rates in Q1. With the totals not yet calibrated for all markets for 2017 and 2018, the most recent full year that total Vehicle Park numbers are available for in all EU markets is 2016, with the number at 36,242,922 in total - the highest number on record and up from 36,136,527 in 2015 and 34,406,745 in 2014.
Within a few tens of thousands either way, the Vehicle Fleet figure for EU markets has grown annually ever since 1994 (23,776,115 units). At approximately 36m units, that is thought to represent PTW use, or at least access by, of close to one in every ten EU citizens of riding age. The four countries that comprise the EFTA area outside the EU (Norway, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Iceland) add around an additional 1.3m units (2018) to the European PTWs in use in total.
Commenting on the latest figures, Antonio Perlot, Secretary General of ACEM, said: "The increase in vehicle registrations reflects the overall improving economic conditions across Europe, particularly in the largest EU markets, as well as European citizens’ preference for an enjoyable and convenient means of transport.
"At the same time, given the seasonal nature of motorcycle and moped markets, we will need to wait for the registration figures of late July to assess whether 2019 has been a very good year for our industry."

Nolan Helmets bought by Shark
The parent company of Shark Helmets in France, 2 Ride Holding, has "accelerated its development plans" with the acquisition of famous Italian rival Nolan.
With financial support from Eurazeo PME, one of the two Paris based equity investment funds that controls the ownership of 2 Ride Holding (2RH), Nolan was founded by entrepreneur Lander Nocchi in 1972 and has been under the equity investor ownership of Helmet Invest since 1992.
Alberto Vergani, President of Helmet Invest, said: "In a world of globalisation we have been looking to the future of our group, and in 2RH we believe have found the best partner to continue our market leadership and to maintain our production in Italy. After 26 years our group of shareholders were looking for a way out, and that one was the best solution for the continuity of our brands." The Nolan Group is currently engaged "in the execution of an industry, innovation, design and production process analysis across its brands - Nolan, X-lite, Grex and the N-Com communication systems brand".
With a reinvestment of around €22m, Eurazeo PME is supporting 2RH as part of its development and transformation strategy. "The group thus maintains the ambition stated at the time of Eurazeo PME's initial investment to double the size of the group by 2023," states Erwann Le Ligné, Managing Director of Eurazeo PME.
