Harley Q2 U.S. Sales -8.5%, International sales -8.9%; Thailand EU Softail/XL Production Delayed to October
Harley-Davidson worldwide retail sales decreased -8.4% in the second quarter, while U.S. retail sales were down -8.0% in the quarter driven largely by continued weak industry sales with international retail sales down -8.9%.
The U.S. 601+ cc industry was down -4.9% in the second quarter compared to the same period in 2018. Harley-Davidson's second quarter U.S. market share was 46.6%. Harley-Davidson's year-to-date Europe market share was 8.8% through June.
"In the second quarter we achieved significant advancements under our 'More Roads' plan and we continued to lay a solid foundation for future growth," said Matt Levatich, President and Chief Executive Officer, Harley-Davidson, Inc. "The decisions and investments we're making, within a highly dynamic and competitive global marketplace, demonstrate our intense focus to build the next generation of riders and maximize shareholder value."
Harley-Davidson says it continues to inspire diverse, new riders around the globe. Harley-Davidson ridership in the U.S. has been up each year since 2001 and was at an all-time high of over 3 million riders in 2018. The company increased its reach and impact in the second quarter and delivered more, younger riders - U.S. rider training participation was up, with the greatest increase among 18-34 year-olds.
Of total U.S. new retail sales in Q2, the mix of 18-34 year-olds was up +2.7%. Emerging market year-over-year retail sales growth of +7.6% was aided by more accessible pricing from local manufacturing in Thailand.
In which connection, European Union regulatory approval for Thai production to qualify for tariff relief was delayed, with production of European destined Softails and Sportsters now slated to start in October this year. Tariff relief approval has now been received by Harley, meaning that the units shipped to Europe from Harley's Thailand plant will be at the standard WTO 6% rate rather than the punitive increase to 31% on domestic U.S. produced models imposed by the European Union a year ago.
Non Trike Touring model tariff relief is expected to be approved later in 2019. Without the agreed exemptions and ramp up of production in Thailand, U.S. built Harley inventory could have otherwise been facing even higher tariffs in the future - a ramp-up to around 56% is slated for 2021 under current plans.
As a result of the timing of these approvals and softer than expected European retail sales as key drivers, the company has adjusted its 2019 outlook and now expects motorcycle shipments to be approximately 212,000 to 217,000 for the full year. In the third quarter, the company expects to ship approximately 43,000 to 48,000 motorcycles
Harley-Davidson's strategic objectives through 2027 are to build 2 million new riders in the U.S., grow international business to 50% of annual volume, launch 100 new high impact motorcycles and do so profitably and sustainably.
The 'More Roads to Harley-Davidson' accelerated plan for growth drives the company's strategy to deliver sustainable growth and build the next generation of riders by delivering exciting products in existing and new spaces, broader access to Harley-Davidson and an optimized customer experience through an even stronger dealer network. The company plans to maintain its investment and return profile and capital allocation strategy, while it funds strategic opportunities expected to drive revenue growth and expand operating margin through 2022.
During the second quarter, Harley announced a collaboration with China's Qianjiang Motorcycle Company Limited [manufacturer of Benelli branded motorcycles and a subsidiary of Volvo owner Geely] to launch a smaller, more accessible Harley-Davidson motorcycle planned for China in 2020, with additional Asian markets to follow. This move is intended to expand access to the Harley-Davidson brand to more riders in Asia. During the second quarter, the company's efforts to increase access in emerging Asian markets, including through its Thailand manufacturing strategy, drove sales increases of +77% in its ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) markets.
Harley-Davidson retail sales in China grew +27 percent in 2018 compared to 2017. The new motorcycle will be designed by Harley, but production, including the engine, will be at a Qianjiang facility in China. Despite the trend to larger engines in China, the 125 cc up to 400 cc displacement market sector that Harley's 338 cc model will sell into in China is said to be worth some 2m plus units a year.
Harley-Davidson says it has also strengthened its leadership in the electrification of motorcycling. Company and dealer preparations continued for the targeted September retail delivery of LiveWire, the company's first electric motorcycle. Harley-Davidson's commitment includes helping to enable a strong global charging network. Dealers are installing public DC fast charging stations and the company is working with global partners to support charging infrastructure development.
"There are more riders on Harleys in the U.S. than at any point in our history, and the number of young riders continues to grow. The strength of the Harley-Davidson brand, and the bare knuckle grit of this company and our global dealers, will continue to be leveraged and sharpened to make riding matter to more people," said Levatich.
Key milestones of the company's multi-year manufacturing optimization initiative, designed to further improve its manufacturing operations and cost structure, were completed during the quarter. Starting in the first quarter of 2018 the company began work to close its wheel manufacturing facility in Australia and consolidate its motorcycle assembly plant in Kansas City, Mo. into its plant in York, Pa.
Full year savings of $25m to $30m for 2019 and ongoing annual cash savings of $65m to $75m after 2020 are still expected. In the second quarter 2019, costs related to the manufacturing optimization were $14.4m. For the full year, the company now expects to incur $40m to $50m of operating expense for this initiative, $10m less than previously expected.
Revenue from the Motorcycles segment was down in the second quarter behind lower shipments. Operating income decreased primarily due to lower revenues and increased tariff costs, partially offset by lower SG&A costs. Financial Services segment second quarter operating income of $75.5m was down -6.2%.
Second quarter 2019 GAAP diluted EPS was $1.23. Year-ago GAAP diluted EPS was $1.45. Excluding restructuring plan costs and the impact of incremental tariffs, second quarter 2019 diluted EPS was $1.46 compared to $1.52 in the second quarter of 2018. Second quarter 2019 net income was $195.6m on consolidated revenue of $1.63 billion versus net income of $242.3m on consolidated revenue of $1.71bn in 2018.
On a discretionary basis, Harley-Davidson repurchased 1.2 million shares of its common stock during the quarter for $42.9m. During the quarter, there were approximately 159.4 million weighted-average diluted common shares outstanding. At the end of the quarter, 13.7 million shares remained on a board-approved share repurchase authorization.

Japanese made motorcycle exports
Japanese made motorcycle exports to Europe -20.14% to April
After modest growth seen in the final quarter of 2018, the latest data released by JAMA (the automotive trade association in Japan, which includes representation of motorcycle manufacturers among its membership) shows exports of Japanese made motorcycles to Europe continuing to decline in 2019, by -20.14% for the year to April at 71,758 units.
Exports of Japanese made motorcycles to USA YTD were -9.47 through April at 23,300 units. Total Japanese factory manufactured motorcycle exports worldwide were -15.58 percent for the YTD at 123,203 units.
Total PTW exports to Europe (motorcycles, scooters and mopeds combined) were -21.64% for the first four months of 2019 (73,5009 units); down -4.86% YTD to the USA and worldwide down -15.60% at 148,120 units.
The increasing number of units being made by Japanese manufacturers elsewhere in Asia, the US and South/Central America goes some way to providing historical context for the data, though the majority of higher value larger displacement Japanese brand machines, especially those being sold in Europe, are still made in Japan.
Their overseas factories are primarily engaged in making and selling scooters and smaller capacity units in 'emerging' markets (where import tariffs are high) and in making ATV/UTV units - especially in the United States, where demand for such machines is strongest.
Japanese made motorcycle and moped (all PTW) exports fell off a cliff in 2009 to 583,879 from over 1m in 2008 and have continued to decline most years since then (463,123 units in 2017, 456,758 units in 2018); they peaked at 1,641m units in 2000.

RST
RST partners with In&motion in new integrated airbag project
The Isle of Man TT saw British RST clothing brand owner MotoDirect and French specialist In&motion announce a collaborative partnership to develop a range of apparel that will have the In&motion wearable airbag technology integrated into the product.
In what RST is describing as the "first integrated airbag garment riding apparel that combines comfort, discretion and high-end safety protection", RST says that "safety is at the core of everything we do. Where possible, we integrate CE back protectors into the garments, and we are the first British brand to have our entire range tested and CE PREN 17092 certified.
"The next step for RST is to introduce a range of RST garments offering enhanced rider protection. The solution is to use airbag technology, and we are therefore very pleased to announce our partnership with In&motion - the experts in engineering wearable airbag systems. Just as armour is integrated into garments, the best way to improve rider safety is to fully integrate In&motion’s airbag technology into RST garments.
"We have been working together to bring a special “Road Racing” algorithm dedicated to the Isle of Man TT. RST is the Official Safety Partner of the Isle of Man TT, and thanks to our partnerships with leading riders such Ian Hutchinson and the travelling Marshals, as well as ongoing work with the likes of Alex Lowes in the World Superbike and Kenny Foray in the French Superbike series, this has all been successful."
Testing and development will continue throughout 2019, and the new products are due for launch in March 2020, for more information contact Alastair.Day@rst-moto.com.

Hantz + Partner - UCLEAR
Multi-function 'Motion' Series UCLEAR rider communication systems
German company Hantz + Partner has been appointed as the master distributor in Europe for a radically updated communication system from UCLEAR.
Being touted as a "revolutionary" step forward in rider communications and safety, the new 'Motion' Series is a re-boot for a rider communications brand that has largely been kept under wraps until this year. In the United States it is being sold by Western Power Sports (and Kimpex in Canada) and is widely considered to be a big step forward in functionality and ergonomics.
Describing it as a "leap forward for communication, sound and safety," Wolfgang Hantz told IDN that "UCLEAR spent a long time listening to the industry and the riders who buy and use communications systems and have built all-new systems around that feedback.
"UCLEAR has added in a number of new patented inventions of their own. The Motion 6 and Motion Infinity helmet communicators introduce Bluetooth 5.0, an all-new DynaMESH intercom network, trainable voice commands, EZ intercom pairing, motion and impact sensors, longer intercom distances, longer battery life, wireless firmware updates, and are fully ruggedised and weatherproof".
Industry firsts are said to include the first ever unlimited-rider mesh intercom with multi-hop auto switching, buttonless gesture controls and the USAFE impact sensor, which can alert a user's contacts with their GPS location if they've been in an accident. This is a new approach to a facility that all new motorcycles will need to be equipped with before too long - certainly within the next decade.
"These units are built to perform on any helmet and in any riding condition on the planet, from the North Pole to a rainstorm at the Equator - and to be easier than ever to use," says Wolfgang. "We're especially excited about the USAFE feature, which could save riders' lives. We're expecting major sales in all riding segments with the UCLEAR Motion Series".
USAFE uses an advanced accelerometer, a triaxial crash sensor, built in. It can measure impact forces to detect and measure hard impacts. If you are unresponsive and have a connected GPS enabled mobile device, USAFE can alert (up to 3) emergency contacts of your situation and GPS location. They are contacted through both email and text via the connected phone and the USAFE contact database. A custom message is included, with rider contact information, satellite view of the crash site, and a list of the closest medical facilities.
Control of Apple Siri or Google Voice by natural speech
Additionally, the first emergency contact receives an auto-dialled phone call. USAFE requires no subscription and is included in the Motion Infinity helmet communicator to help injured riders receive care as quickly as possible.
"In the near future we may also be able to use this technology to relay G-Force data to medical caregivers. But the benefits of the system don't stop there," said Wolfgang. "Without giving too much away to our competition, I can exclusively confirm to IDN that we plan to continue to update the capabilities of USAFE and add to the medical data we can instantly share after an impact is measured.
USAFE emails, texts and calls emergency contacts
"The hardware is already there, so as we add to our software capabilities, owners with USAFE enabled devices will receive those capabilities via wireless updates.
"Then there is DynaMESH - the first ever unlimited rider-mesh intercom network combined with multi-hop automatic switching. It pairs with mesh and non-mesh units and auto-reorganises as group riders change positions. This ensures stable and constant connections over the longest distances".
This is all seriously impressive, but there is yet more.
"UCommand allows the rider to control the Motion Series unit and to control Apple Siri or Google Voice by natural speech - the rider can train his or her own voice commands to be recognised by their choice of service via the UCLEAR mobile app.
"Another first is the exclusive Gesture Control - this sends out a sensor beam from the Motion Series unit, allowing simple hand gestures to command the most common features such as volume and pause/restart music - even if wearing winter gloves - and it fits any helmet, not just those that are described as comms-prepared."
Automatic motion control
The intercom distance is up to 1.2 km (3/4 mile) per person and the battery life of the unit is up to 18 hours on average. The product includes the CLEARLink mobile app and easy wireless firmware updates, music sharing, music/intercom overlay, call conferencing, private vs group intercom toggling, universal pairing compatibility, advanced and fully user-adjustable ABF noise cancellation, a graphic equaliser to tune and balance the speaker output and PULSE PRO 2.0 ultra-premium speakers with dual boomless MEMS mics.
Hantz + Partner is active is Germany, Austria and Switzerland, but for the rest of Europe is now looking to build a network of individual national distributors.

Swedish motorcycle registrations
Sweden: total motorcycle registrations +10.29% YTD
The latest data available from the motorcycle industry trade association in Sweden (McRF) shows new motorcycle registrations up by 10.29% for the five months to May 2019 at 6,111 units.
However, though on statistically low monthly units, the trend in the Swedish market may be softening with motorcycle registrations at -2.65% (1,981 units) in May, having been +55.69% in March (1,244 units) and +4.40% in April (2,181 units).
Niklas Kristoffersson, CEO of McRF, thinks that given the poor weather this spring, compared to 2018 and especially in May, "this selling season has actually gone quite well so far, and better than 2018 by around 10% in motorcycle terms".
The Swedish moped market is only slightly down YTD at -2.74% (5,284 units), meaning that total new PTW registrations are up, but only by +3.84% YTD on 11,395 units.
In 2018 new motorcycle registrations were down for the full year at -10.83% (10,279 units), with Mopeds up by +22.71% (16,155 units), putting total new PTW registrations at +7.06% (26,444 units) for the year – the highest such figure for several years.

Kellermann
Kellermann super small micro S Dark
Aachen, Germany based lights specialist and AMD World Championship 'Product Partner' Kellermann has managed to go even smaller than its popular micro 1000 Dark with a new micro S Dark - an extremely compact version.
Due to the drastic size reduction and the strongly tinted indicator glass, the "indicator" component disappears from view almost completely. In action, however, the high-performance LEDs provide a spectacularly bright light.
The micro 1000 family is one of the really traditional ranges of indicators from Kellermann and they have been installed on different kinds of motorcycle models for more than 15 years. The new version micro S Dark represents the trend to even more compact motorcycle lights.
"The new micro S Dark is really super small - it would even fit six times into the larger micro 1000. This allows an extremely compact and individual design of the tail of the bike. And since Kellermann is the absolute master in high quality compact lights for bikes, this ‘Kellermann’ also impresses with its amazing illuminating power."
Since the complete electronics of the micro S Dark are in the high quality, durable metal casing, this indicator can be plugged into the 12 volt net directly. Featuring Kellermann's EXtranz (Extreme Optical Transparency Technology) Longlife Protection Guard, it is IC operated at 330 kHz and suitable for 12 volt DC applications (comes with M5 x 0.5 x 6.5 mm fastening screw).

G.P.R. Italia
G.P.R. for KTM
G.P.R. Italia, one of the market's oldest exhaust manufacturers, has completed the development of a range of exhausts options for the KTM 790 Duke and Adventure.
With silencers homologated to Euro 4 for noise and the option of a racing Decat pipe, the Dual Carbon line for the Adventure 790 and the Powercone Evo dedicated to the Duke 790 are totally handmade in Italy (Milan) with a protection grill that is fixed with anti-tampering screws, therefore the db killer is removable only with manipulation of the exhaust.
The weight saving is put at around 50% compared to the KTM original exhaust and the power increase at about +2 hp, or up to +4 hp with the Decat pipe installed.
This has already been a big year for G.P.R. as it introduced, what it said at the time, is one of its most important new products of recent years - the homologated 'Sonic Revolution'.
Well known for the race success that informs the company's product R&D, the 'Sonic Revolution' (BMW R 1250 GS, R 1200 GS, F 850 GS, F 750 GS, F 800 R) is a race-bred, track-tested design intended primarily for Enduro, Naked and sport scooter road use. Zero Motorcycles
Zero's "fully smart" SR/F - "the world's most transformational motorcycle riding experience"
Described as "an unprecedented combination of industry-leading power, control and connection", Santa Cruz, California based Zero Motorcycles' SR/F is said to be their most "innovative and powerful" motorcycle yet.
The new streetfighter styled zero emissions motorcycle is said to be the first "fully smart" motorcycle, incorporating a "revolutionary" new operating system - Cypher III, building on the brand’s 13 years of "industry-leading motorcycle and powertrain development, setting a new standard for premium electric performance.
"Effortlessly powerful, the SR/F delivers an incredible 140 ft-lbs of torque and 110 horsepower with a simple twist of a throttle. The bike is propelled forward by the class-leading performance and efficiency of Zero’s new ZF75-10 motor and ZF14.4 lithium-ion battery.
"The compact powertrain boasts innovative air-cooling that increases longevity, eliminates most routine maintenance and effortlessly launches the SR/F to top speed. A single charge delivers up to a 200-mile range with the addition of Zero’s Power Tank, which will be available fall 2019."
The all-important Rapid Charge System works on the "large and growing" network of Level 2 charge stations and provides a platform that allows for up to three independent charging modules. This enables "unique adaptability and the fastest recharge capacity in Zero’s line-up. With all three modules installed, the SR/F can charge from 0 to 95 percent capacity in one hour."
Features include a "uniquely designed" steel-trellis frame and concentric swingarm to optimise torque delivery to the rear wheel, allowing the bike to "harness the full capabilities of the new powertrain.
"As much brains as brawn, the SR/F ensures the rider is in control regardless of conditions, thanks to Zero’s new Cypher III operating system and Bosch’s Motorcycle Stability Control (MSC)."
Cypher III acts as the central hub, integrating all systems on the motorcycle to a "next-gen app and dash - everything is seamlessly connected for easy and intuitive control."
The SR/F is the first electric motorcycle to integrate Bosch’s MSC system, recognised internationally for dynamic acceleration and improved stability regardless of road surface or conditions. Zero says that when combined with Cypher lII, the MSC’s "full capabilities are unleashed, resulting in best-in-class straight-line ABS and cornering brake control, traction control and drag torque control.
"The SR/F’s arsenal of ride modes allows the rider to customise the bike’s performance through the intuitive next-generation app and dash interface. The SR/F navigates the road no matter the conditions with Street, Sport, Eco, Rain and up to 10 programmable custom modes.
"The SR/F is also equipped with a dual radial front brake system, adding a level of control that makes shedding speed as effortless as building it.
"The SR/F is the first "fully smart” motorcycle thanks to the Cypher III operating system. It is also the first commercially available connected motorcycle on the market. Connectivity gives the rider the ability to monitor the bike in four main areas: Bike Status and Alerts, Charging, Ride Data Sharing and System Upgrades and Updates."
Bike Status and Alerts: The SR/F alerts riders regarding bike status, including interruptions in charging and tip-over or unexpected motion notifications. In addition, the “Find my Bike” function allows riders to keep tabs on the motorcycle at all times.
Charging: The SR/F takes the convenience of recharging to new levels with the ability to remotely set charging parameters, including Targeted Charge Levels, notification of State of Charge (SoC), Charge Time Scheduling and Charge Tracking. These notifications allow riders to control all aspects of charging and to monitor charge status even when away from the motorcycle.
Ride Data Sharing: Riders can gather, relive and share extensive data about their ride through the app. An industry first, the motorcycle records bike location, speed, lean angle, power, torque, SoC and energy used/regenerated. Riders can replay each ride and also choose to upload additional content to record and share their full experience. Riders also have the option to keep data anonymous.
System Upgrades and Updates: New updates and diagnostic capabilities allow the rider to remotely download the latest Cypher III operating system release to ensure optimal performance and provide access to feature improvements.
"All the benefits of connectivity are offered free-of-charge for the first two years with the purchase of a new SR/F."
With a 3 kW Rapid Charger, the Xero SR/F starts at $18,995 USD. The premium SR/F model with 6 kW Rapid Charger, fly screen, heated hand grips and aluminium bar ends is $20,995 USD. Both models are expected to begin shipping to U.S. dealers this spring.

Newfren
Urban friendly ' PRO RACE' performance brake shoes
Italian brakes specialist Newfren has quite a pedigree having been a top European manufacturer of brake discs and pads since before they were the standard tech for the motorcycle industry, since the days when brake shoes were the ubiquitous solution.
Indeed, that is where the company started in the late 1950s, when Alessandro Barbero, a creative person who was always looking for new ideas, discovered a revolutionary new glue that changed brake shoe production for ever.
The glue replaced the rivets for fixing the friction material to the brake shoe casting, and having installed what was then the first brake friction material gluing station in Europe, Barbero quickly went on to build Newfren into one of the most important brake shoe production specialists in Europe.
Newfren has evolution and a never ending drive for improvement coded into its DNA, and recently the company introduced a new performance brake shoe called 'PRO RACE'.
The body of the brake shoes is die-cast in a special aluminium alloy complying with EN 1676:2010 standards. The new friction material "with exceptional characteristics" is said to offer "considerable advantages in terms of braking, improving safety in city traffic thanks to its high resistance to fatigue".
The Newfren brake pad range also evolves constantly, thanks in large part to victorious MX GP and street championship partnerships, with 20 different application-specific brake pad compounds available for most motorcycle models from the 1970s right up to today.

Noted for the improvements to handling and comfort that its products deliver, Matris is offering a model-engineered version of its M40KC top of the line rear twin shock set that is fully adjustable in compression, rebound, length and preload.
