Industrial gross margin was € 171.7m, a 28.6% return on net sales; operating expenses were € 147m; EBITDA was € 83.1m, EBITDA margin 13.8%, with EBIT of € 24.7m at 4.1% margin.

Profit before tax was € 15.1m with net profit of € 9.1m. The net financial position was 528.5 €/mln, an improvement of 20.1 €/mln. The company shipped 210,300 vehicles worldwide (down from 321,500 for the first six months in 2019). Capital expenditure was € 52.8m; industrial gross margin was € 171.7m, down -31.3%; the return on net sales was 28.6% with Group operating expenses of € 147m.
In two-wheeler terms, the Group sold 163,000 two-wheelers worldwide (-24.5%), generating net sales of € 467.6m. The overall decline arose largely from downturns in the EMEA and the Americas markets (-20.5% sales volumes; -21.5% net sales) and in India (-58.4% sales volumes; -49% net sales). The Asia Pacific region was -9.6% sales volumes, -4.7% net sales.
Piaggio says it "confirmed its leadership in the European scooter segment with a share of 24.1% and maintained a strong position in the North American scooter market, with a share of 23.9%. In North America, the Group is also consolidating its presence in the motorcycle segment with the Aprilia and Moto Guzzi brands.
The scooter segment saw an increase in Vespa sales in a number of Asian countries, most notably China, and a rise in sales of the Piaggio Medley high-wheel scooter.
In the motorcycle segment, sales were steady for the Moto Guzzi V85TT and for the Aprilia RS 125 and Shiver.

In commercial vehicles, the Piaggio Group reported sales volumes of 47,300 vehicles (-55.2%) and net sales of € 132.4m (-43.3%). Group sales dropped by 45% in the EMEA and Americas markets and by 56.3% in India.
The Piaggio Group is working on a project for the development and production of a new range of light commercial four-wheel vehicles, the new Porter. The vehicle will be produced in the Italian factory in Pontedera, and operations are expected to begin by the end of the year.
Piaggio Fast Forward (PFF), the Piaggio Group robotics and future mobility company based in Boston, USA, continued the marketing of its 10 kmh/20 kg payload Gita "follow-me robot carrier". Featuring a 4-hour battery life, Gita is produced in the Piaggio Fast Forward factory in the Charlestown district of Boston.
With the return to production at the Baramati plant in India on 11 May, all Piaggio Group manufacturing facilities had resumed operations. Also in May, the invalidity division of the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) declared a design registered by a Chinese party, used to justify the production of scooters similar to the Vespa and exhibited at the EICMA 2019 two-wheeler show in Milan, to be invalid.
In June, the Vespa and Paris fashion house Christian Dior announced a collaboration agreement on the Vespa 946 Christian Dior, designed by Maria Grazia Chiuri, Dior’s creative director for women's collections. The iconic scooter will be available from Spring 2021 in Dior boutiques around the world and subsequently in selected Piaggio Motoplex flagship stores.

Limited Edition Vespa 946 Christian Dior

In July Piaggio signed a € 60m credit facility "to enable the parent company to continue consolidating and expanding its leadership position in the mobility sector, and further strengthen the Group's financial structure" and has delayed the decision on the distribution of an interim dividend for 2020 until its Q3 results are seen.
The Zongshen Piaggio Foshan Motorcycle joint venture in China has launched the Aprilia Pagani 150 - a modern style café racer - an ABS equipped 6-speed design variant of the CR150 based on the same 18 hp 150 cc single. Described by Ride Apart as, essentially, a rebadged 1948 Mondial Pagani, Aprilia’s Pagani, however, was borrowed from F.B. Mondial - the storied Italian brand that Piaggio makes in China.
Meanwhile in India, Piaggio has launched new BS6 compliant Aprilia ('Storm') and Vespa (VXL and SXL) 125 cc scooters.
Moto Guzzi has introduced four new V7 III Custom Kits (Stripes, Red & Black, Classic Green and Raw) in addition to the unfinished 'Sketchbike' black side panels, unfinished fairings, tail cowl and bare metal gas tank kit programme.

UK motorcycle registrations

UK: motorcycle registrations +13.43% in June 2020

The latest data available from the MCIA, the motorcycle industry association in the UK, shows that having been -51.86% in May (4,965 units), -83.93% (1,467 units) in April and -22.19% in March (12,484 units), new motorcycle registrations in the UK were +13.43% in June 2020.

In a pattern that is emerging in all of Europe's major markets, the June data for the UK suggests a market recovery as lockdown eases and the benefits of PTWs as a transport solution become even more apparent than ever - especially for commuting and urban mobility.
In YTD motorcycle registration terms, the UK is now "only" running at -26.36% (41,401 units YTD compared to 56,219 last year). In total PTW terms the UK was +14.58% in June (13,250 units in total) and is -25.77% YTD (43,862 units in total).
Honda was market share leader in June, followed by Yamaha and Triumph. The top selling motorcycle above 125 cc was the Royal Enfield Interceptor 650, followed by the BMW R 1250 GS Adventure.
By way of context - motorcycle registrations in the UK grew slightly in 2019, +0.72% with 100,472 units sold. Many in the UK pointed to consumer confidence being low as a result of Brexit and general economic uncertainty in 2019 as the reasons why the UK motorcycle market didn't do as well as elsewhere in Europe last year. Along with Italy, France, Germany and Spain, the UK remains one of Europe's 'Big Five' markets (actually, the 5th largest), which between them account for over 80% of annual new registrations in Europe.

Ducati

Hypermotard 950 RVE

Ducati's new Hypermotard 950 RVE is part of the Borgo Panigale fun-bike family pitched between the entry model Hypermotard 950 and the top of the range Hypermotard 950 SP.
It features 'Graffiti' style livery - "a striking graphic design inspired by 'street art' and that of the Hypermotard 950 Concept presented in 2019 at the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este.

"A sophisticated painting process and application of the graphics guarantees a result comparable to that of an airbrushed bodywork.
"The electronic package of the Hypermotard 950 RVE is enhanced by the Ducati Quick Shift (DQS) Up and Down EVO, which is added to the components already present in the standard version, namely Bosch Cornering ABS with Slide by Brake function (in setting 1), Ducati Traction Control Evo (DTC EVO) and Ducati Wheelie Control (DWC) EVO.

"The Hypermotard 950 is the fun-bike par excellence of the Ducati range. The aggressive design of the bike, inspired by the motard look, revolves around the twin exhausts under the seat and the smaller superstructures that leave the mechanical components visible, including the trellis rear frame".
It is powered by the twin-cylinder 937 cc Testastretta 11° engine. At the top of the Hypermotard 950 range is the Hypermotard 950 SP with racing graphics and Öhlins suspension with increased travel, Marchesini forged rims and Ducati Quick Shift (DQS) Up and Down EVO.

Putoline

Putoline N-TECH Special Pro Racing+ 5W-50

The Putoline Oil brand is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. The brand was conceived specifically for two-wheelers, and "in keeping with its origins and tradition of innovative products and packaging" is now launching its Special Pro Racing+ 5W-50 in 1 litre bottles into its mainstream range.
Putoline's N-TECH SPR+ 5W-50 is "the ultimate racing product for the most extreme conditions, developed in collaboration with Ten Kate Racing, among others. Gebben Van Venrooy Racing (MXGP) and our partners Bas Dakar Racing Team and Husqvarna-SKS Racing Team have also made valuable contributions to the successful development phase. Now, due to its success, a 1 litre bottle of Putoline N-TECH SPR+ 5W-50 has been added to our range in addition to the 20 litre Bag-in-Box".
A race-proven, fully synthetic racing 4-stroke motorcycle oil based on an advanced mix of the best base oils available on the market, it has a high ratio of PAOs (Polyalphaolefins) and synthetic esters to "ensure unrivalled quality and performance".
"The choice of the best base oils, in combination with our revolutionary N-TECH additive system, improves power and minimises wear," says Putoline's Export Area Manager Simon Kamper.
"SAE 5W-50 ensures a higher viscosity, therefore a higher resistance to fuel dilution, and is specially developed for extreme conditions such as track action and race starts. It combines maximum reliability with optimal wet clutch performance, increasing clutch grip and power."
Launched last year, Putoline's N-TECH additive package is built on its pioneering research and development and exploits its specially developed in-house new additive package formula and all the latest properties and opportunities that its use of API group 5 fully synthetic base oils has given them.
The N-TECH product range sits at the top of the Putoline range, with N-TECH SPR+ as its top product, followed closely by the N-TECH Pro R+, which is available in various viscosities in both road and off-road versions. These are suitable for most "conceivable and diverse conditions from year-round use to extreme competition".

'Core'

'Core' has a streamlined, minimalist design, "created to appeal to all generations of motorcyclists", said to be comfortable and versatile with an extremely 'slim' fit resembling leisure boots, without compromising on the necessary protection and certification for riding footwear.
The upper is made of grain leather, the lining is waterproof and breathable plus air mesh, and there is malleolus PU internal protection on both sides. Fastening is by laces and the footbed is anatomic, changeable and breathable. The sole is made of rubber and comes in either black or white and available colours are black, black/white or brown.

'Grid'

'Grid' is intended to be a summer model based on the same technical principles as 'Core', but crafted of different materials, more suited to hot weather. The textile upper is slightly waxed to make it water repellent, able to cope with humidity and light showers, while the absence of an internal membrane ensures the highest level of ventilation for the foot. Other features include nappa hydro leather inserts, breathable air mesh lining and malleolus internal protection on both sides. Only in blue.

Scorpion

Scorpion EXO R1 Carbon Air: "Racing technology wears Black"

Before EICMA we reported on Scorpion's new EXO 1400 Air Carbon full face - "the best GT (Gran Tourismo) helmet ever built".
Milan saw the company add to its 2020 offer with the EXO S1 Jet and, seen here, the high-tech, lightweight, triple shell size EXO R1 Carbon Air, which weighs just 1,200 g in size M (+/- 50 gr) which, Scorpion says, "moves the bar of technology and performance even higher - the best racing helmet ever produced by Scorpion Sports".

The shell is made of Ultra-TCT Carbon, "a lightweight material that offers superior protection". In the event of an impact, it ensures considerable energy absorption thanks to its ability to progressively deform. Wind tunnel tested, the aerodynamic shape guarantees great stability, even at the very high speeds that are reached in competitions at the highest levels (Moto GP, SBK, etc.).
Features include removable and washable 3D laser cut cheek pads and KwikWick III fabric liner with Air Fit, KwikFit and a multiple density EPS that "follows the shape of the head perfectly". The Air Fit system allows the internal cushions to be inflated and deflated, while the KwikFit internal profiling makes the R1 eyewear friendly.
A second-generation Ellip-Tec II mechanism makes replacing the visor "easier than ever - without the use of tools". Equipped with very powerful springs, the system guarantees a totally hermetic and incredibly silent clamping along the entire seal. The visor also has a central locking mechanism that allows easy and safe closure and opening and offers a very wide and vertical view. It is also possible to leave (and stabilise) the visor in a slightly open position (useful especially when riding at low speeds in the city).

The visor has tear-off supports and the transparent visor also combines with a “Dark Smoke” visor as standard, while the Pinlock 100% MaxVision system (also standard and present in the box) ensures 100% anti-fog action.
The upper air intake (with a tension spring that can be opened by a simple touch) is large but with a low profile to blend perfectly with the aerodynamic curves of the helmet. The large amount of air captured is discharged into the interior and then discharged by the rear extractors to generate an aerodynamic load (downward thrust) for even more stable riding at high speeds.
The EXO R1 Carbon Air has a "Double-D" ring system in lightweight titanium, and in the event of an emergency, the rapid second generation cheek pad removal system facilitates rapid removal of the helmet.

LSL

LSL 'Gonia' crash pads

The original LSL crash pad design has rightly become regarded as a classic fall protector configuration. However, LSL's Jochen Schmitz-Linkweiler says that the ongoing development of modern motorcycles and their associated edgier design mean that such a design cannot stand still - a correspondingly "sharper drawn" product design is called for.

The new 'Gonia' crash pads are "characterised by straight lines and the dynamics of the motorcycle," says Jochen. "The central shock-absorbing element is, as with our classic crash pads, a plastic insert embedded in the aluminium shell.
"The rising contour of the crash pad head provides space effectively preventing roadway jumps when hitting manhole covers and other such surface obstructions. Just as accurately drawn as the outer shell, the black insert of the pad looks like a skid and keeps the motorcycle sliding in the direction of the energy in case of a fall."
The plastic absorbs the impact and brakes the speed of the vehicle with its coefficient of friction. In light slides it is only the plastic that gets scratched and that can be easily replaced. The CNC-milled aluminium outer shell of the 'Gonia' crash pads is available in ten different colours, a choice of finishes, including a carbon look finish, and can be combined with more than 150 mounting kits for a wide variety of motorcycle models.

German motorcycle registration

Germany: motorcycles +21.64% in June

Germany's apparently relentless march to market recovery continued in June with the latest data from the IVM, the motorcycle industry trade association in Germany, showing new model registrations +21.64% for the month (14,010 units) and now running at 'just' -5.80% for the YTD (70,877 units, compared to 75,237 units last year).

In the context of 2020, the motorcycle registration statistics in Germany for 2020 so far have been remarkable. Having been +37.14% (4,446 units) in January and -3.98% in February (9,252 units), motorcycle registrations were -18.70% in March (16,581 units) and -28.14% (12,064 units) in April, but started to recover spectacularly in May (+6.33%/14,524 units), suggesting that demand hasn't gone away, with consumers buying when they judge the moment is right.
Indeed, in total PTW terms, it looks very much like the theory that the urban mobility and isolation messages that PTWs have in their favour are being taken up by commuters.
Total PTW registrations in June in Germany were a massive +48.42% over June 2019 with 25,712 new models registered in total, putting the YTD up +5.50 at 110,863 units.
In market share terms, BMW remains 'Top Dog' in its home market with a modestly reduced 22.68% share YTD (16,076 units sold and six models in the top 20 best sellers in Germany YTD), followed by Kawasaki, Honda, KTM and Yamaha.
The top selling model was BMW's R 1250 GS (5,400 units YTD), followed by the Kawasaki Z900 (Z650 in fourth), Yamaha MT-07 third and KTM 790 Duke, 390 Duke and 690 SMC in 5th, 6th and 7th spots.
Last year saw the German motorcycle market grow by +4.38% to 113,039 units, with PTW sales growing by +6.53% to 165,311 units.

BMW Motorrad

BMW Motorrad posts global growth of +12% for June

BMW Motorrad has posted its best ever sales results for the month of June and says it is "entering the second half of the year with confidence".

Dr. Markus Schramm, Head of BMW Motorrad, said: "After a great start to the new year, we were still up by the end of February, with an increase of almost +12% on the previous year. Then the dynamic development of the Corona pandemic also began to have a negative impact on the demand for motorcycles. But we see clear light at the end of the tunnel again."
BMW motorcycle and scooter sales in June were +9.8% over the same month last year, with a total of 20,021 BMW motorcycles sold. Despite understandably weak sales from March to May, BMW Motorrad sold 76,707 motorcycles worldwide in the first half of 2020 - a decrease of -17.7%.

BMW Motorrad says it expects sales in the rest of 2020 further buoyed by its new R 18 Cruiser - especially in USA where the company is not disguising the fact that it is targeting Harley Big Twin sales.

Sales of 13,937 units in Europe (+2,684 more than in the same month of the previous year) saw the company post +23.9% for January to June; with a +58.2% increase in the German home market. They were +72.9% in France; +52.2% in the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxemburg; and +52.0% in Portugal. Sales in Australia, China, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Russia and Thailand were +17.3% in June (2,997 units).
The new BMW Motorrad models F 900 R, F 900 XR and S 1000 XR were strong sellers, as were the perennial favourites R 1250 GS and R 1250 GS Adventure and the other 'Boxers' such as the S 1000 RR Super Sports model. The company says it expects to see U.S. sales buoyed by the new R 18 Cruiser.

Bihr

Bihr extends its SHAD luggage distribution programme to more countries

Spanish luggage manufacturer NAD S.A. and leading distributor Bihr have announced an expansion of their SHAD luggage sales and marketing partnership.

Bihr will be launching the new Shad TERRA range, dedicated to 'Adventure' riders.
Bihr is adding SHAD motorcycle seats, cases and accessories into its portfolio of brands as the official importer into Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg and Austria, "in addition to supporting our Spanish co-distribution.

"Our partnership started more than two years ago within the Spanish market, in which Bihr joined SHAD as the official co-distributor. As a result of this expansion, Bihr will be launching the new TERRA range, dedicated to 'Adventure' riders."
Bihr says it is the leading European distributor of spare parts, accessories, tyres and rider gear for motorcycles, quads/ATVs and scooters. Founded in 1975 (by Cyrille Bihr), the company is present in over fifteen countries - including France - where Bihr says it is the sole market leader.
Bihr's portfolio comprises about 300 brands and 200,000 items distributed through a network of 14,000 dealers, supported by 400 employees, including 70 in-house sales representatives and 40 customer service representatives.
"From the outset, the strength and foundation of this exceptional success has been based on comprehensive services and first class logistics," says VP Marketing and Communications, Thierry Chonglez. "With a total storage area of more than 40,000 m2 spread over four warehouses, Bihr is able to supply almost all dealers in Europe within 24 hours."
NAD was founded in Barcelona in 1973 and has become a "world leading manufacturer of motorcycle seats, cases and accessories for the OEM and aftermarket industry". The SHAD brand, which is owned by NAD, started in 1992 as an aftermarket luggage brand sold to dealers in Europe through a network of distributors. The Engineering and Design departments are based at the Barcelona headquarters.

Stein-Dinse

Stein-Dinse adds Zieger accessories

German distributor Stein-Dinse is now offering the Zieger range of premium accessories with more than 160 different licence plate brackets and engine protection parts available for over 100 different bikes - "all at extremely favourable reseller conditions.
"This latest addition to our range sees us add another premium brand. Zieger is one of the leading specialists in terms of motorcycle accessories and the young, but experienced company is driven by innovation".

Founded by Frank Zieger in a familiar motorcycle industry story - frustrated at not being able to find the quality and design of licence plate he wanted for his own bike -  the sheet metal bracket that Frank designed and made for himself became the start point of a business.
Zieger has since grown to be an internationally known and respected company, and when not satisfied by the quality of any part out there on the market, Frank Zieger takes on the challenge of designing and making better. Often there isn't an existing design for the solution he is looking for, so he comes up with his own.
From travel gear to assembly stands, Zieger engineers and produces everything they find a need for, with licence plate brackets remaining their most popular product, with design versions to meet the regulatory requirements of all European countries.
"All Zieger parts are made in Germany in our own production facility, which means we are able to keep control of quality and price. The range includes parts for many models in various colours," says Frank.

Venhill Engineering

Powerhose Plus for R6

British-made Powerhose Plus front and rear brake hose kits are now available for the 2017-2020 Yamaha YZF-R6 ABS.
Venhill Engineering's Powerhose Plus braided brake lines feature a DuPont Teflon core, which is resistant to loss of shape through heat, delivering more efficient fluid flow to the calipers and increased braking force compared to the originals.

Stainless steel braid is wrapped around the core to prevent pressure expansion, with a PVC jacket bonded on to keep water out and protect bodywork from scratches.
Threaded swivel fittings enable the hose to be positioned with zero twist. Venhill machines its own banjo fittings and dome-headed banjo bolts to ensure proper fitment and a consistent, quality finish.
All Venhill braided brake hoses exceed American DOT and German TÜV requirements, and, for further peace of mind, every hose that leaves the UK factory is pressure tested to 1,500 psi.
Venhill Featherlight clutch and throttle cables are also available for the 2017-2020 YZF-R6 ABS.

Shock Factory

Shock Factory M-Series monoshocks

The brainchild of former racer Mike Capon, Shock Factory near Lyon, France, offers multiple ranges of shock absorber and suspension solutions, including twin shock set-ups, specialty lines for Ural motorcycles and Can Am Spyder reverse trikes, the BMW Telelever front end and, seen here, M Shock single shock set-ups.

Described as a "simple and effective shock absorber to improve comfort and handling," Mike says that the M Shock is a single-tuned damper that allows the rider to adjust compression and rebound in a synchronised way, while keeping the right ratio between the two.
With 48 clicks of adjustment available, M Shocks offer a wide range of set-up solutions for "a refined ride and a difference the rider can feel". Created for use on the road, the M Shock is equipped with progressive damping, able to eliminate the transmission of irregularities of surface, while keeping the control needed for the big bumps, allowing directional stability and trajectory accuracy on imperfect surfaces.
Mike explains that "each component and each principle used for the construction of our monoshock is chosen according to its capacity to guarantee the reliability and the duration of the life of the shock absorber. Each shock absorber is tested on our Roehrig test bench before being shipped to the dealer.
The high-quality components, materials and surface treatments, as well as our know-how and experience, provide a shock absorber that will last over time, and that will continue to offer excellent performance - even after many thousands of kilometres.

"Our components, material and manufacturing quality allow us to offer a two-year warranty on our monoshock products, without mileage limitation. At the end of this warranty period our aftersales service is available to service, update or repair your shock absorber as soon as possible.
"Our vast experience in design, development and manufacturing has allowed us to reduce our costs, without compromising the quality of our shock absorbers. Our experience has also allowed us to refine the technology and refocus the design technique to develop reliability and durability," says Mike.
Shock Factory also offers a Plate Corrector option. The Seat Corrector is a length adjustment of the damper - this setting allows the rider to change the height of the machine without changing the spring preload. Mainly used in competition to change the geometry of the machine, the corrector is also useful to change the height of a machine used by several riders of different sizes.

Caberg

Caberg - 'Horus' flip-up

'Horus' is a new flip-up (modular) helmet from Caberg in Italy - "conceived for touring as well as urban commuting thanks to the dual homologation P/J that allows riding with the chin guard open (J configuration) or closed (P configuration). 'Horus' passed the homologation tests required by the standard regulation ECE 22.05 P/J".

The chin guard has a rotational movement that is independent from the visor, allowing it to be much closer to the shell and reducing the head wind effect while riding with the chin guard open.
"The elegant design and precious technical features make it the ideal travel companion with its 'Panoramic Ultra-Wide' outer visor, currently already in use on our top of the range 'Levo' for one of the best wide fields of view in its category - the equivalent of 82 degrees".
'Horus' is equipped with an anti-fog Pinlock Max vision lens and a glove-friendly integrated anti- scratch Double Visor Tech sunshade visor. "The ventilation system offers optimal comfort even in the most extreme conditions thanks to an air front vent on the chin guard and one large, adjustable air intake on top, two rear air extractors, built-in inner shell channels and breathable fabrics for the entirely removable and washable liner".
'Horus' is comms ready and can be equipped with the new Caberg JUST SPEAK EVO Bluetooth communication system as well as with the main Bluetooth systems already on the market.

Italian motorcycle registrations

Italy - June 2020 motorcycle registrations +54.99%

In statistical terms, when it comes to recovery rebounds, it doesn't bounce much higher than this!

After being -95.85% in April with just 526 new motorcycles registered in Europe's largest market, and "only" being down by -11.35% in May (11,150 units), the latest new motorcycle registration statistics for June available from ANCMA, the motorcycle industry trade association in Italy (the owner of EICMA), make extraordinarily good reading.
June motorcycle registrations in Italy were +54.99% with 16,861 new motorcycles registered, putting the Italian market at a way better than expected total of "only" -23.83% (48,066 units) for the first half year.
Italy is an important scooter and moped market, so total PTW registrations (of all displacements and styles) were +37.31% (39,078 units) for June and are running at -23.04% for the YTD.
The top selling motorcycles in Italy YTD have been the BMW R 1250 GS Enduro (1,870 units YTD), followed by the Honda Africa Twin (1,831 units), Benelli TRK 502/502X (1,525 units YTD), Yamaha Tracer 900 (1,331 units) and the Honda NC 750 X (1,258 units).

MV Agusta

MV Agusta - limited edition Rush 1000 Hyper Naked

MV Agusta is a regular producer of limited edition specials and in May announced a 300 production run for Rush 1000 "drag strip-inspired" Hyper Naked bike in June.
"The first bikes will be rolling out of the Lake Varese hangars towards the end of June, ready for the privileged owners who pre-ordered their Rush 1000 online and through MV Agusta's worldwide dealer network.
"The mean looking Rush 1000, with its 4-inline-cylinder engine, 208 hp (212 hp with the Racing Kit) and a top speed of over 300 km/h is a model aimed at those who do not fear to stand out from the crowd, as the style and components are appropriately focused on emphasising the concept of a hyper naked "beast". The aerodynamic rear wheel cover, a technical solution used in drag races to reduce the coefficient of drag, represents a clear statement of this attitude.

"All of MV Agusta's engineering know-how is packed into the Rush 1000 and draws on Formula1 and MotoGP technology, offering a thrilling out-of-this-world riding experience, with hair-raising true MotoGP replica performance.
"The 8-level traction control and 'launch control' systems help manage the bike's beastly acceleration and rocket-like starts. Together with the EAS 2.1 Up & Down for clutch-free changes and the wheelie control system, they contribute to making the Rush 1000 easy and fun to handle with maximum safety. The Rush personality is further enhanced by the Öhlins EC suspension units with electronic control and the aluminium and steel trellis frame, both adopted from the Brutale 1000 RR along with the Brembo Stylema calipers and the Bosch 9 Plus Race ABS.
"The design of the Rush 1000 lives up to everything one would expect from a MV Agusta limited series, starting from the many unique details such as the specially designed headlight unit, spoke front wheel, the minimalist rear subframe and passenger seat, as well as the unique side exit exhausts. The livery of the MV Agusta Rush 1000 is a pure statement of style and elegance, with dark metallic matt grey, Mamba red matt carbon and metallic bronze.

Timur Sardarov

"The optional Rush Racing Kit is composed of an extremely lightweight titanium dual exhaust silencer system with a dedicated carbon fibre cover with billet CNC-machined inserts as well as an engine ECU with a specifically developed engine control system map to increase and optimise the power. Also included is a unique carbon fibre passenger seat cover".
Timur Sardarov, CEO of MV Agusta Motors S.p.A., commented: "With the production of the Rush 1000 starting in June, we are right on track with regard to the 5-year industrial plan we announced a few weeks ago.
"As we are breaking new ground in our expansion journey into new segments and new markets, MV Agusta will continue to produce amazing works of exclusive motorcycle art from its headquarters in Italy, remaining true to its heritage of performance, elegance and state-of-the art technology. I am sure this incredibly attractive model will meet the enthusiasm of the proud new owners."

Andreani

How to choose your suspension tuning Dyno

We have featured Italian suspension specialist Andreani's DB4 Suspension Dyno before in the pages of International Dealer News, but we have never shown its standard DB4 and the more advanced DB4 Plus side by side and looked in depth at the differences between them.
Though they look similar and share some common features, such as the adjustable speed range (0-2000 mm/s) and stroke range (15-100 mm), the plug-and-play control and acquisition software (with advanced data processing and export functions), the optical temperature sensor and the same maximum load (5.000 N), the DB4 and the DB4 Plus differ in a number of ways.

First of all, the Plus version of this tool (part of a family of Andreani Suspension Dyno machines) has an even more powerful engine than the base model (a 5.5 kW three-phase motor against the 4 kW in the standard DB4), plus an even more sophisticated suite of software tools that allow professional suspension technicians (motorcycle and automotive) to explore a wider range of speed-load combinations.
The choice between the two largely revolves around the kind of suspension tuning that it is going to be required for. For example, on models where the maximum stroke is up to 30 mm (such as shocks for touring bike applications), where the maximum velocity is limited to 620 mm/s, the standard base model DB4 has all the features and software tools that will be needed.
Equally, the standard base model is also fine for applications where even though the maximum stroke is up to 100 mm, the load produced is below 2.000 N., for example mountain bike forks or road shocks.
The standard base model DB4 is a great allrounder on which technicians can test a wide range of forks and shocks with several travels, with pretty small loads at larger strokes.
However, it is for strokes 50 mm or more (off-road shocks and forks) and heavy loads that the DB4 Plus is the better option as it has greater capacity and precision for heavy duty suspension loads.
Due to the 5.5 kW 380V three-phase AC motor it can reach higher speeds and forces than the base model (which has a still excellent 4 kW engine), allowing specialised technicians to calibrate and tune the highest possible suspension forces and highest speed suspensions.
Among its advanced functions, the DB4 Plus features software that includes hysteresis analysis and dissipated energy and damping coefficient calculations, and it is equipped with a sophisticated electronic controller board that ensures stable and reliable automation and extremely precise data acquisition.
It also offers real-time visualisation of the suspension load-speed graph with an intuitive graphical interface, the possibility to compare different click settings and valve options to measure dynamic suspension parameters and to detect any operating anomalies. Custom software also available upon request.
Like the DB4, the Plus model is equipped with a series of adapters to test every kind of suspension and it is delivered with its laptop with software already installed.

Interceptor 650 exhaust options

Last month we saw a new range of upgrade replacement options for Yamaha's Ténéré 700 from Italian exhaust specialist G.P.R.
This month we see the company's new design options for the fast selling Royal Enfield Interceptor - a low cost middleweight that has been internationally well received by test riders, dealers and consumers and one destined to occupy a unique position among Europe's most popular models.

Building on the Indian manufacturer's success with its Continental GT and Himalayan, these new parallel twins are a performance engineer's blank canvas just waiting for owners to exploit the custom and performance opportunities offered by this robust Harris Performance developed chassis platform.
Seen here are two of the G.P.R. Italia options for the Royal Enfield 650s - the Powercone line and the Vintacone.
Both are made in stainless steel, Euro 4 homologated, and form part of the new G.P.R. project to achieve a net zero carbon impact for its production by 2023 with the use of raw materials that are recyclable at end-of-life, with common steel scrap making up 99% by product weight.
Delivering a choice of classic or aggressive look, these exhausts are said to provide a 2.5 hp increase over the stock exhausts and a 50% weight saving.
"All manufacturers need to take their responsibilities seriously," says owner Mauro Orlandi, "and doing so doesn't mean that increased performance and great looks have to be compromised.
"The aesthetics of our designs for the Royal Enfield are perfectly adapted to the classic, naked styling of the Interceptor 650, with an excellent balance of classic aesthetics and our innovative technical solutions such as the removable dB killer for track use and stainless steel coating on the Powercone, a line developed as a result of our MotoGP and SBK experience. It weighs just 1.86 kg, mounts as a direct OE replacement, is compatible with side bags and central stand and, where present on the original, the lambda probe housing is provided." They are backed by a two-year warranty.

Akrapovic

Akrapovic - CBR1000RR-R

With development completed in January, Akrapovic has launched a fully racing-oriented Evolution Line Kit (titanium) exhaust system for the 1000 cc Honda CBR1000RR-R Fireblade. Using the HRC Race Kit, it has been developed at the recommendation of the R&D department of Honda Motor Corporation.

The Evolution Line Kit (titanium) is aimed directly at racing teams and riders using the CBR1000RR-R Fireblade on the track and under competition regulations, and therefore does not meet emission compliance requirements for street or on-highway use - it has been developed exclusively for use with Honda’s latest track-focused motorcycle.
Constructed entirely from low-weight titanium alloys, with complex parts cast in Akrapovic’s in-house titanium foundry (said to be the only one like it found worldwide in an exhaust factory), this kit is a totally bespoke system.
"Each part of the four headers that connect the system to the engine is cast in the foundry and formed to achieve an optimum configuration, ensuring that the fitment is perfect. This devotion and the use of state-of-the-art lightweight materials means the system weighs less than 5 kg. Optimal performance is achieved because the system delivers a perfect throttle response right through the rev range".
The relationship between Akrapovic and Honda Motor Corporation has resulted in the Slovenian exhaust specialist becoming the official manufacturer and supplier of the exhaust for the new 2020 CBR1000RR-R Fireblade. The HMC R&D department recommends use of the Evolution Line Kit (titanium) exhaust for the CBR1000RR-R Fireblade with the official HRC Race Kit.

Spanish motorcycle registrations

Spain: June motorcycle registrations +13.03%

Having been -94.43% for April (841 units) and -43.68% for May (10,152 units), the latest new motorcycle registration numbers from ANESDOR, the motorcycle industry trade association in Spain, show dramatically continuing signs of improvement.
Total new motorcycle registrations in June were up by +13.03% (compared to June 2019) at 21,057 new units and are now running at 'just' -26.31% for the YTD (65,247 units, compared to 88,540 for the same period last year).

Like most of Europe, after a good start to the year in January and February (+11.96% and +19.28% respectively) registrations in Spain fell off a cliff at -46.64%, -94.43% and -43.68% respectively in March, April and May.
Total PTW registrations for June were up by +10.08 (22,501 units), having been -43.85% in May at 10,972 units (compared to 19,542 units in May 2019). For the YTD, PTW registrations are -25.37% at 72,599 units. In Spain the best months for new registrations are generally May, June and July, which in 2019 accounted for some 62,000 of the annual total of 194,663 units (+12.17% from 173,545 units in 2018).
Following his participation in a transport industry-wide initiative in Spain that called for government help for the sector, Jose Maria Riano, General Secretary of ANESDOR, stated that "the commitment by the government to invest in the recovery of the Spanish automotive industry is very important for the sector."
The Spanish government has confirmed that a system of grants (as opposed to loans) is being made available. Riano went on to say that "it is necessary that these grants are carried out efficiently. With regard to the two wheels sector specifically, this means that the measures should address the particular circumstances of the motorcycle market, which in many respects are quite different to those of passenger cars."
Speaking to the June numbers, Riano said "despite the economic crisis, in the scenario of the 'new normal', Spanish citizens are betting on personal light vehicles. The trend existed before COVID-19, and seeing it re-emerge allows us to be moderately optimistic for the future."
The Spanish government has included motorcycles (PTWs of all types) in its RENOVE 2020 plan - providing € 5m in aid for the purchase of motorcycles (electric and road legal ICE) with a tax base price of less than € 8,000.
Riano went on to say that "the inclusion of the motorcycle sector in RENOVE will contribute to recovering the sector after the historic lows. In addition, this boost will provide support to promote more efficient, sustainable and safe vehicles. An important initiative factor considering that the average age of motorcycles in Spain is 16.4 years old."
The top selling motorcycle above 125 cc in Spain is the Kawasaki Z900 (1,546 units YTD); Honda remains market leader in total PTW terms (18.9% share, 12,354 units sold), with Yamaha second and Kymco third. The Yamaha NMAX 125 was the top selling model overall in Spain in June (961 units), and YTD the top seller so far is the Kymco Agility City 125 (2,630 units sold).
