UK motorcycle registrations

UK: motorcycle registrations -83.93% in April 2020

Though hit slightly less hard than Spain and Italy so far, the latest data available from the MCIA, the motorcycle industry association in the UK, shows that new motorcycle registration growth in the UK also came to a crashing halt in March and April, with sales -22.19% for March at 12,484 units, and -83.93% (1,467 units) in April, having been +2.29% in January (5,709 units) and +3.48% in February (4,254).

March is usually the highest month for new motorcycle registrations in the UK - March 2019 was +8.88% over 2018 at 16,045 units; April 2019 was +4.65% at 9,130 units. For 2020 YTD, the UK is -31.41% with 23,916 new motorcycle registrations (compared to 34,867 for the first four months of 2019).
In total PTW terms, the UK was -83.48% in April at 1,609 units and is -31.17% for the YTD at 25,276 units. Moped registrations are -26.76% YTD at 1,360 units.
The largest single market sector in the UK remains 'Naked' style bikes, followed by Scooters and the Adventure Sport sector, broadly equal. The MCIA data has motorcycle use (the 'Park') at 1.25 million in the UK in 2018.
By way of context - motorcycle registrations in the UK grew slightly in 2019, +0.72% with 100,472 units sold. Many in the UK pointed to Brexit and general economic uncertainty, with consumer confidence low, as the reasons for the UK to lag so badly behind the 2019 and prior growth seen in most other markets in Europe. Along with Italy, France, Germany and Spain, the UK is one of Europe's 'Big Five' markets (actually, the 5th largest) who between them account for over 80% of new motorcycle registrations annually in Europe.

CNC Racing

Ducati V4 rearsets, winglets, clip-ons, protectors and switches

Italian sportbike and streetbike parts and accessory specialist CNC Racing has a range of parts available for the Panigale V2 and V4, including these two versions (plus exclusive Pramac Racing   Limited Edition) of V4 footrests.

V4 rearsets

Severe duty track tested, they are up to 12 position multi-adjustable and fully machined from solid lightweight alloy and designed for use with road or inverted gear levers without any modification. The footrests themselves, and the extremities of the levers, can be reclined and locked by means of elastic steel pins and the gear and brake levers are mounted on very smooth bearings.
The footrests are knurled to ensure maximum grip even in very wet conditions, with the hole for the workshop motorcycle stand and the hydrostop included in the kit.  A second, less extreme "Easy" kit is also offered.

GP winglets

Available in versions for V2 and V4 Panigale models (and the Aprilia RSV4), these aerodynamic autoclave made carbon fibre GP winglets are said to create greater aerodynamic downforce on the front axle, equal to about 25 kg at the maximum air pressure, increasing the stability of the bike and guaranteeing great driving precision.
Also seen here, these 53 mm clip-ons for the V4 are machined from solid 7075 zinc alloy aluminium (Ergal - for good ductility, high strength, toughness and good resistance to fatigue and corrosion) and then anodised. They are equipped with lightened stainless steel screws and front holes for fixing a front brake fluid tank bracket.

53 mm clip-ons

A 51 mm steering damper support is included in the kit - this allows the angular adjustment of the handlebars without modifying the anchor point of the stem. The handlebar inclination is 6.5 degrees, and they are 225 mm long with 30 mm collar height.
CNC Racing frame crash protectors for the V4 Panigale are model-specific designs to preserve the engine, chassis and fairing from damage in the event of a drop, slide or side crash.  They are made in aluminium and Delrin and no modifications are required for mounting.

Frame crash protectors

Left-side handlebar switches

Finally, these left-side handlebar switches for Panigale V4 street models are machined from 7075 aluminium bars (Ergal) and then hard black anodised. All the buttons are compliant with the IP67 water resistance standard and CNC Racing says the operation of all the buttons is guaranteed to cover 700,000 cycles. They are a fully reversible plug & play install - just dismantle the original switch with the tools recommended by the manufacturer, then fit the CNC Racing switch, connecting the plug to the original cable. They are also available as a Pramac Racing Limited Edition in black.

German motorcycles registrations

Germany: motorcycles -28.14% in April

Evidence that Germany's success in protecting its population from the coronavirus pandemic has translated into also protecting the German economy comes in the form of the latest data from the IVM, the motorcycle industry trade association in Germany.

Yes, new registrations for April are down, of course they are, but at -28.14% (following -18.70% in March), the impact has been less than elsewhere in Europe. Italy and Spain for example saw April new motorcycle registrations down by more than 90%, but Germany, April traditionally the second strongest sales month of the year, was still worth 12,064 new motorcycles (-28.14%) and 17,604 new PTWs in total (-25.81%).
Having been +6.38% for January and February combined (13,698 units), Germany was -8.99% for Q1 (30,279 units YTD). In total PTW terms, Germany was -15.81% in March (22,987 units) and -2.52% for Q1 (43,114 units YTD).
In market share terms, BMW remains 'Top Dog' in its home market at 27.11% share YTD (11,478 units sold), followed by Kawasaki, KTM, Honda and Yamaha.
The top selling model was BMW's R 1250 GS (3,955 units YTD), followed by the Kawasaki Z900, Z650, BMW R 1250 RS and Yamaha MT-07. A record 10 of the Top 22 best sellers were BMW models.
The German motorcycle market grew by +4.38% to 113,039 units in 2019, with PTW sales growing by +6.53% to 165,311 units - both the best performance since 2008 (excluding the rush to register pre-Euro 4 models before the law changed at the end of 2016).

Ognibene

Ognibene adds 1/2 inch chain options to TROFEO kits

Bologna based chain technology and power transmission specialist Ognibene, with years of experience in getting engine power to the rear axle, has introduced a TROFEO kit that is ideal for a wide range of short, medium and longer distance applications and requirements.
Founded in 1948 (by Dante Ognibene), its TROFEO programme features products that place the emphasis on superior materials and construction for durability - advanced designs that deliver great performance and an excellent price/quality ratio that makes its kits value for money and "one of the most requested products in the aftermarket today," says Sales Manager Federico Arbizzani.

"The Ognibene motorcycle TROFEO kit has a chain whose construction is very similar to the best chains on the market. It offers optimum value for money in the medium to high band of the motorcycle parts market. It is ideal for medium distances and speed and features our popular and patented 'Silent Sprockets' which guarantee noise reduction and help to prolong the life of the transmission.
"Popular with several manufacturers, including Ducati and Fantic, where applicable, all TROFEO kits include a chain closing tool and a 50 ml lubricant spray can."
Ognibene's 'Silent Sprocket' technology has been developed as a result of over thirty years of collaboration with some of the most prestigious and important chain brands in the world (including D.I.D and Nissin). The technology features a vulcanised rubber profile applied to both sides of the sprocket, which is said to guarantee a noise reduction of at least 2dB more than conventional kits, thereby extending transmission life.
The brainchild of Franco Ognibene, these front and rear sprockets are made exclusively in C45 steel and Chrome/Molybdenum for strength, in a design that combines efficiency and high precision with reliability and durability.
For 2020, Ognibene has added to its kit options, upgrading its 'standard' kit line with 1/2 inch chain applications (with or without X-ring), to complement its existing 5/8 inch X-ring range. The Ognibene 'Silent Sprockets' range includes over 400 product items, applications and fitments.

G.P.R. Exhaust Systems

Homologated Tenere 700 DUAL made in 99% recyclable steel

Italian specialist manufacturer G.P.R. Exhaust Systems has developed several upgrade replacement options for Yamaha's Tenere 700 with the homologated, stainless steel DUAL line as the 'stand-out'.

In line with the Milan based manufacturer's ambitious project to achieve carbon free "zero impact" production by 2023, some 99% of the weight of the DUAL is made from recyclable and end-of-life disposable materials such as common steel scrap.
"All manufacturers need to take their responsibilities seriously," says owner Mauro Orlandi, "and doing so doesn't mean that great performance and looks have to be compromised.
"The aesthetics of the DUAL are perfectly adapted to the classic ADV styling of the Tenere, with an excellent compromise between the classic aesthetics and our innovative technical solutions such as the double outlet with dB killer grill protection (part of the new Euro 4 standards) and the external lacing design, something that has been very difficult to achieve from the mechanical point of view."
The exhaust is much lighter than the original at just 1.6 kg and totally made of 304 stainless steel, including the installation fittings. Mauro says that the sound is "full and deep, but within the new homologation limits. It improves performance on the whole curve, especially from the middle up, with a maximum increase of +3.5 Cv (valve flow coefficient), excellent torque and peak performance at 8,865 rpm."

Domino

Domino race grade controls

Best known for having turned the humble motorcycle grip into a control system and art form, Italian controls and grips specialist Domino was founded in 1951 as an OEM manufacturer of cable transmissions for clutches and brakes.
Fast forward to 2020, and as the Domino Group closes in on its 70th anniversary (via the 1991 acquisition of the equally storied and 1930 founded acquisition of the then Turin based Tommaselli), the company continues to be at the cutting edge of its markets with EICMA seeing them introduce several advanced and innovative new products.

Racing electronic throttle control (RBW)

Domino's first electronic throttle control (Ride by Wire), specifically designed for racing use - plug and play with the main motorcycle models. Compared to the original controls, this product minimises the free play between components, providing an extremely precise response to the rider's input, very low friction and weight (198 g), and greater strength. The components are precision CNC- machined from high strength EN AW7075 zinc alloy  aluminium, black anodised, with a throttle tube made with special techno-polymers, a waterproof IP67 rated Hall sensor, specially developed by Domino during many years of research, a special return spring tuned for racing use, and waterproof connectors.
Although only recently launched, the Domino electronic throttle control has already gained many podiums with the official BMW Superbike and Endurance World Championship race teams, in particular on the 2019 BMW S1000RR of Tom Sykes.
Available for a growing list of models, including the BMW S1000RR 2019 (exclusively sold by Alpha Racing), Ducati Panigale V4R/S, Moto 2, Yamaha YZF-R1 2020 and KTM RC390 2019.

Racing quick shifter sensor kit

A new plug and play Hall effect quick shifter kit for the majority of motorcycles able to manage the blipper during the gear downshift. The kit includes the special Hall effect Domino sensor, a threaded rod made in 7075 Ergal (zinc aluminium alloy), a steel ball joint rod end, and special electric wiring - all interfaced with the original electrical connections. This Hall effect magnetic quick shifter kit has been designed and developed with the aim of solving the well-known problems that affect the load cell sensors on the market and therefore improve the rider’s feeling with the gearbox. The sensor has a double signal to guarantee an assembly with traditional or inverted gearshift.
This kit was developed in collaboration with the main team in the Italian Superbike Championship; applications so far confirmed include the Aprilia RSV4 1000 and 1100; Ducati Panigale 1199 and 1299, V4, V4R, V4S; Yamaha YZF-R1 2019; Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R 2016 and BMW S1000RR 2018.

Racing clutch lever hand control

Described as the lightest clutch handle control on the market at only 145 g, it is produced almost exclusively in aluminium, with a new lever design with a collapsible CNC handle - using the same ergonomics of the Domino racing fixed levers, the most widely used in competition. The shape of this new lever was optimised by computational flow analysis (CFD) in order to minimise the drag induced by the air flow. This design is said to be the only one on the market today with a special seat to fix the 2D angular sensor on the lever. A friction-free PTFE sliding bearing allows smooth rotation of the lever.
This product was also developed in collaboration with the main teams of the Moto2 and Moto3 World Championship and is available in 26, 28, 30 and 33 mm.

A450 road racing grips

Created to complete the Domino range of grips for road racing use, these dual compound grips, a technology pioneered by Domino, draw on 20 years of race experience and R&D with dual compound use and 50 years of ergonomic experience to produce a solution that adapts to individual riders' needs and preferences.
The two materials have different hardnesses (and colours) to give a harder grip core to make the grip stable on the handlebar and a softer outer coat to promote maximum grip in all conditions. The harder material is exposed in those areas that are more subject to wear and tear - such as the flange and the outer edge - better supporting the hand and reducing the more localised wear.
A new external multi-conic finish allows exceptional and constant grip - even in wet conditions - with progressive wear of the grip. This is possible thanks to its engineered shape. They have a slightly larger grip diameter than the popular A010 Domino series grips, designed for those who prefer a larger ergonomic grip.
There are three points for iron wire fixing, of which the innermost can be used to adapt the socket to the shorter accelerator tubes of the Japanese motorcycles.

Renthal

Renthal - new lightweight FB36 handlebars

Over 50 years of specialist experience have taught Renthal that a fraction of a second, a few grams, a couple of millimetres - "it all counts".
Working alongside its factory race teams, Renthal have taken the concept of improving performance through weight reduction without compromising existing handlebar strength to a new level.

"Every time you accelerate, brake, corner, jump, you work against the weight of the motorcycle. By reducing weight, it improves the performance of the motorcycle in all of these areas - resulting in faster lap times".
Renthal's 50+ years of experience in handlebar design, testing and racing has resulted in the R-Works Fatbar36 - described as the "ultimate in lightweight motocross handlebars".
Utilising Renthal’s 36Tech handlebar standard and proprietary Zarilium material to give a high strength handlebar at the lowest possible weight, "the R-Works Fatbar36 is 36% lighter than our standard 28 mm diameter Fatbar, previously the lightest motocross handlebar".
"At Renthal we have always strived to produce the strongest, highest quality product we can. Our current handlebar range is at a level of strength that our factory level teams feel it needs to be, but weight saving will always be high on the priority list. In developing the Fatbar36, we made this our priority too".

The company says that its new 36Tech advanced technology is a new handlebar standard developed by Renthal to push forward the boundaries of handlebar technology. Using advanced wall geometry, the 36 mm clamping diameter tapers down to a conventional 22 mm control section at each end, reducing weight by maximising material efficiencies in wall thickness along the entire length of the handlebar.
Exclusive to Renthal, Zarilium is a new aluminium alloy that has +20% greater ultimate tensile strength, while maintaining the same elongation properties. This additional strength has allowed Renthal to achieve the maximum weight reduction possible whilst matching the best in class strength with the Renthal 28 mm diameter Fatbar.
Founded in 1969 in the UK by Henry Rosenthal and Andrew Renshaw, the first Renthal handlebars were made for the motorcycle trials market and were the first to be made of aluminium.
Even in the early days, there was a focus on supporting the world’s best riders, and in 1971, Renthal gained its first trials World Champion title with Mick Andrews. Renthal moved into the growing sport of motocross, with which the brand is now synonymous. Gaining instant popularity and racing success, the first motocross World Championship for Renthal was won in 1981 by Neil Hudson.
Supercross in the U.S. boomed in the late 80s and Renthal was at the epicentre, supporting legend of the sport and seven times Supercross world champion Jeremy McGrath.

Renthal was founded in 1969 in the UK by Henry Rosenthal and Andrew Renshaw.

For the entire 50-year history of Renthal there has been a focus on working with the world’s fastest riders. Renthal supported athletes who have won World Championship titles every year, from 1983 to the present day. To date, Renthal supported athletes who have won 213 World and 222 U.S. championship titles.
Looking to the future, Renthal has returned to be a self-owned business after some 10 years or so under the ownership of the Motorsport Aftermarket Group in the USA. The company continues as a cutting-edge design and manufacturing company, with extensive on-site facilities such as its handlebar testing Lab - Renthal is the only handlebar manufacturer using data acquisition and equipped with its own in-house test facility.
"As the global leader in handlebar technology, we pride ourselves not only on our engineering abilities, but also our state-of-the-art manufacturing facility. Taking raw Zarilium tube, we put it through a host of operations to turn it into the Fatbar36.
"The R-Works badge represents uncompromising performance. It means we have selected the ultimate materials and manufacturing processes at our disposal to bring the market the very best performance product we can".
Renthal products are available through leading distributors, including Techno Motor Veghel in the Netherlands (www.tmv.nl).

Italian motorcycle registrations

Italy - April 2020 motorcycle registrations -95.85%

The latest new motorcycle registration statistics from ANCMA, the motorcycle industry trade association in Italy (and the owner of EICMA), do not make good reading. After the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic started to show dramatically in the March registration numbers (-69.18%, 3,855 units), April saw only 526 new motorcycles registered in Italy (-95.85%).

For the year to date new motorcycle registrations in Italy are down -49.41% at 20,055 units. Over 15,000 of those were registered in January and February alone, when a good start to 2020 saw January at +3.13% (6,817 units) and February at +12.70% (8,857 units).
In total PTW terms (Powered Two Wheelers) March was -66.08% at 8,520 units (March 2019 was +27.27/25,121 units), with April down -96.98% (just 813 new units registered compared to 26,920 units in April 2019). April is traditionally the fourth largest month for sales in Italy.
Scooter registrations for January to April were -47.63% at 22,085 units.
The top selling motorcycle in Italy YTD is the BMW R 1250 GS Enduro (795 units), followed by the Honda Africa Twin (734 units), BMW R 1250 GS Adventure, Yamaha Tracer 900 and Ténéré 700.
For the record, the Italian market was again Europe's largest at +6.26% in motorcycle registration terms for 2019 (98,883 units), and +5.65% in total PTW terms at 231,937 units.

National Cycle

VStream for the 2019-20 KLE1000 Versys

Maywood, Illinois based manufacturer National Cycle continues to add to its popular VStream windscreen programme with new options for the recently updated KLE1000 Versys.

The model-specific design comes in two different sizes and tints which, with the OEM height adjustment, ensure a perfect windscreen for almost every rider size or riding preference. The company says that both offer improved wind protection and riding comfort compared to the OEM or other aftermarket windscreens.
VStream gets its name from its unique patented shape. The advanced "V" profile and dimensional contours push the wind vortex out and away from the rider's helmet, resulting in a peaceful, quieter riding environment.
These windscreens are made from tough 3.0 mm Quantum hardcoated polycarbonate. This high quality material, along with state-of-the-art manufacturing techniques, provides outstanding clarity, impact strength and scratch resistance - "unmatched by any windscreen maker worldwide".
"Quantum hardcoated polycarbonate is the material of choice for serious motorcycle riders. It is ten times more abrasion resistant than FMR hardcoated polycarbonate, and 30 times more than windscreens made from commonly used acrylic or 'aircraft plastic'".
VStream Windscreens are easy to install and protected by a 3-year warranty against breakage.

AIMExpo

AIMExpo - Three days of dealer only at Columbus, Ohio, in January 2021

Having been confidently telling the market that fall/autumn timing is best for an industry expo and that combined public and dealer attendance is 'the new black' where such events are concerned, the MIC's AIMExpo management team has 'gone back to the future' to the old Advanstar 'Indy' Dealer Expo playbook to try to succeed where that and similar shows failed.

Under the pay-off line "The Show, the People, the Experience, the Education - Building the Future of Powersports", Irvine, California based MIC Events has announced that its American International Motorcycle Expo (AIMExpo) is moving to January 21-23, 2021 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center in Columbus, Ohio (it having been slated to be held there in September this year) as a three- day dealer only expo.

"North America's largest powersports show is changing more than timing; the show will become a trade-only event and emerge as an integral part of the buying season."
"Timing is everything," said Cinnamon Kernes, a former Advanstar show executive and currently Vice President and General Manager at the MIC's events division. "Transitioning to the first quarter has been part of a long-term strategic plan for AIMExpo, along with providing more focus on our core audience - dealers.
"These changes not only align the show with the ideal buying time for dealers and retailers, but also provide the perfect opportunity for brands to reconnect with dealers, kicking off what will be a pivotal year for the industry."
In remarks that are widely open to interpretation, Kernes went on to state: "Additionally, this move to January opens the door to partner with a major distributor in a much more strategic and meaningful way."

The void opened up by the closure of the 'Indy' and 'Cinci' shows has been filled by three distributor events at that time - Tucker Powersports at Fort Worth in January, the WPS/HardDrive vendor/rep sales meeting in their Boise, Idaho, hometown convention centre (also in January) and Parts Unlimited/Drag Specialties' impressive and wildly successful spring NVP and Dealer Expo at Louisville, Kentucky, in February.
The AIMExpo release appears to suggest that show management is hoping to persuade one of the three to fold their event with AIMExpo in Columbus - something that could create strategic complexities.
When asked the question, Kernes said that "adding a third show in Q1, especially with all that's happening, would be a mighty big ask for our industry - not something we would do.
"So yes, we are planning and hoping to host distributors that recognise the opportunity presented by hosting their annual dealer show at AIMExpo.
"A trade-only show allows AIMExpo to concentrate on industry needs and education at a time when powersports needs it most.  Quality over quantity is necessary in the new trade show landscape.  With this new focus on retailers, the show will now take place over three days instead of four, saving exhibitors and attendees time and money.
"COVID-19 has forced retailers and manufacturers to change the way they do business – at warp speed.  AIMExpo's education programmes, developed in partnership with PSB, will focus on these ideas and innovations to help retailers improve efficiency, stay competitive and improve bottom lines.  AIMExpo will provide tools and solutions for retailers as we start the new year."

LV-10 for 2020 Kawasaki Z 900

LeoVince continues to develop new LV-10 slip-on applications, this time for the Kawasaki Z 900 (2020), in three different versions: LV-10 Stainless Steel, LV-10 Black Edition and LV-10 Titanium.
Developed in collaboration with the best Moto2 and Moto3 teams, and based directly on LeoVince's MotoGP and SBK race experience, the company says it "designed an exhaust system with extremely compact dimensions to grant maximum lightness, the best performance and the unmistakable LeoVince racing sound".

Manufactured entirely from AISI 304 stainless steel, the LV-10 Stainless Steel and Black Edition body sports a matt finish and a laser-etched LeoVince logo.
"In the Titanium version, the silencer and the manifold are made using titanium grade 1, a pure material with high levels of ductility, strength and corrosion resistance while guaranteeing a 30% weight reduction compared to stainless steel.
"TIG welding is done entirely by hand and underlines the craftsmanship of the product while retaining its racing DNA".
Additional features include high thermal resistance (900°C) fibreglass wool, applied through the use of a single proprietary and volumised yarn, to allow the sound-absorbing material to expand freely without the fibres losing integrity, greatly increasing the durability.

Venhill Engineering

Featherlight cable for Interceptor 650

British cables and controls specialist Venhill Engineering has developed a Featherlight clutch cable for Royal Enfield's new 650 Interceptor - "offering owners of the best-selling parallel twin a lighter, smoother, longer lasting experience, at a modest cost".

Manufactured by Venhill at its UK factory, the Featherlight cable provides a lighter, smoother action, improved feel and increased durability compared to the OE version.
Each one features Venhill's high quality Featherlight cabling, a marine-grade stainless steel inner wire that resists stretching and a durable PTFE liner for minimum friction that eliminates the need for lubrication and delivers a lighter action.
The cables are all 'Bird-caged' - a special process applied to the end of the inner cable wire which allows solder to penetrate the weave of the cable, making the bond with the nipple much stronger, while adding extra strength and durability. The process significantly reduces the risk of cable breakage when put under repeated stress and pressure.
For ease of fitment, Venhill cables are a straight swap with the originals - so there's no need for any modifications. Available in black, blue, green, grey, orange, red and yellow for all models of the 650 Interceptor (from 2019 on).

KTM

KTM to restart production May 11

PIERER Mobility AG has announced that KTM is to end the short-term working implemented for all 3,800 employees and restart production on Monday, May 11.
Citing what it describes as "positive signals from reopened markets", Europe's largest motorcycle manufacturer quoted Italian supply chain interruptions as among the reasons for its decision to suspend production in March.

"Due to the resumption of production by Italian supplier companies in the last week, motorcycle production now restarts on Monday May 11, 2020 in several steps, until full operation on May 18, 2020.
"The sales figures from Scandinavia and regions such as Austria, Germany and China, where the dealers have already opened, give a positive outlook." In addition, due to the COVID 19-related measures, KTM anticipates that the two-wheeler will become increasingly important for private transport.

"Short-time work for the approximately 3,800 employees at all Austrian locations thus ends at the end of May," said Stefan Pierer, CEO of PIERER Mobility AG. He went on to thank his employees by saying: "Thank you for your perseverance. Together we will withstand this crisis and emerge strengthened from it!"

Spanish registrations

Spain: April PTW registrations -93.47%

The latest new PTW registration numbers from ANESDOR, the motorcycle industry trade association in Spain, continue the predictably depressing impact seen in the second half of March as the market there remained under 'lockdown' for the whole of April.
Total new PTW registrations were down by -93.47% in Spain in April at 1,074 units, from 16,436 units in April 2019.
After a good start to the year, with January +13.45% and February +21.43% (with over 14,000 new PTWs sold in each of the first two months of the year), March was 43.66% down (9,128 units), giving us an insight into what two weeks of 'lockdown' meant. Now the April figures show us what a full month of lockdown means!
In 2019 Spain saw total PTW growth of +12.17% for the full year (194,663 units), but having lost two months of the "annual market action" it remains to be seen, as Spain emerges carefully from 'lockdown' in May and beyond, the extent to which lost sales will be picked up later in 2020 (if at all).

Statistically the figures are even worse in Spain when looking at motorcycles alone. The market there was -94.43% (841 units) in April, having been +19.28%/12,825 units in February, +11.96%/12,373 units in January and -46.64%/7,997 units in March.
For the year to date,  the motorcycle market in Spain is -34.40% (34,038 units sold), compared to 51,885 units sold in the first four months of 2019.
Moped registrations in Spain were -82.61% for April (233 units sold) and are just -5.92% YTD (5,089 units sold) following a strong start to the year.
In a transport industry-wide initiative, Jose Maria Riano, General Secretary of ANESDOR, has signed a request to the Spanish government for a "crash plan" that will contribute to "stimulating the market and allowing companies to sustain jobs".
"We need the Ministries of Industry, Ecological Transition and Transport to have the motorcycle in their plans to rebuild the automotive and mobility sector. Spain has 5.5 million registered mopeds and motorcycles, and so far this year 13% of all registered vehicles have been motorcycles and represented 12% of total vehicle registrations in Spain in 2019.

Jose Maria Riano, General Secretary of ANESDOR

"Motorcycles and mopeds have a long social, industrial and sports tradition in Spain, and, driven by consumer choice, their presence on the streets of Spain has grown significantly in recent years. Their effectiveness and efficiency in today's mobility environment has allowed the motorcycle market to have almost doubled since 2013."
"In this framework, it is necessary for administrations to have the two-wheel sector in mind when developing their strategic plans for the future. Ministries and municipalities must not forget the motorcycle sector when planning for mobility - the future of companies and their workers is at stake."
Riano went on to remind us that "ANESDOR is keeping the communication channels open with the government of Spain and, through ACEM in Brussels, with the European Commission, with the objective of seeking coordinated social and economic solutions to the crisis."

Polaris

Polaris Q1 2020 - sales rev -6%, Indian & Slingshot +7% at $127m

Polaris Industries, Minnesota, has reported 2020 Q1 sales revenue down by -6% to $1,405m, but in a market where Q1 North American retail sales are reported as down in the high-single digit percent, Indian Motorcycle retail sales were up low-single digit percent.

Motorcycles segment sales at Polaris, including PG&A, totalled $127m, up +7% compared to the first quarter of 2019, driven by increased sales of both Indian Motorcycle and Slingshot models. Sector gross profit for the first quarter of 2020 was a loss of $1m compared to a profit of $4m in the first quarter of 2019.
North American consumer retail sales for Indian Motorcycle increased low-single digit percent during the first quarter of 2020 in a weak mid to heavyweight two-wheel motorcycle industry that was down high-teens percent. North American consumer retail sales for Polaris' Motorcycle segment, including both Indian Motorcycle and Slingshot, increased low-single digit percent during the first quarter of 2020, while the North American motorcycle industry retail sales for mid to heavyweight motorcycles, including three-wheel vehicles, was down mid-teens percent in the first quarter of 2020.

Polaris manufacturing plants have restarted production at select locations, based on orders in hand, anticipated future demand and supply chain parts availability - it would appear that at the time of reporting only the Polaris plant at Monterey, Mexico, was still waiting to be able to confirm re-opening.
Like many, given the unprecedented economic uncertainty as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the company had already withdrawn its full year 2020 guidance (on March 23); however, also like many, Polaris' performance differed markedly between the first eight to ten weeks of the quarter and what came in March, especially the second half of March.
CEO Scott Wine said: "We opened 2020 on an upswing, with retail demand significantly outpacing our expectations, but the abrupt impact of COVID-19 in mid-March drastically altered our momentum.
"Since then we have honed our focus to four goals which will guide us through this crisis: the safety of our employees; the viability of Polaris; the strength of our dealer network and stewardship for our shareholders and other stakeholders.
"Through fast action and bold decisions, we enhanced workplace safety and realigned our operations to match evolving demand trends. We also moved aggressively to optimise our cost structure, preserve liquidity, and augment our financial strength and flexibility; we are actively supporting our dealers as they find innovative ways to serve customers and reignite demand.
"We expect the COVID-19 pandemic, and its corresponding shock to the economy, to be a substantial challenge for the global economy and our business through the remainder of the year and possibly longer.
"Nevertheless, I am confident in our dedicated and hard-working Polaris team’s ability to navigate through this unprecedented environment and emerge a better, stronger and more agile business. Regardless of the headwinds we face, our commitment to be a customer-centric, highly efficient growth company remains unchanged - we believe this vision will propel our business forward and further solidify our position as the global leader in Powersports."
Off-Road Vehicles (“ORV”) and Snowmobiles segment sales, including PG&A, totalled $824m for the first quarter of 2020, down -5%; PG&A sales for ORV and Snowmobiles combined increased +7% in Q1. Sector gross profit decreased -16 percent to $202m in the first quarter of 2020.
ORV wholegood sales for Q1 were -7%; Polaris North American ORV retail sales were down high-single digit percent for the quarter, with both side-by-side vehicles and ATV vehicles down high-single digit percent. The North American ORV industry was approximately flat compared to the first quarter last year.
Q1 snowmobile wholegood sales were $6m compared to $13m for Q1 2019; Polaris snowmobile retail sales were down mid-teens percent during the first quarter of 2020 and down low-single digit percent for the twelve-month season ending March 2020. Q1 North American industry retail was down nearly -30% and down high-single digit percent for the season ending March 2020.
The rapid decline in retail demand over the last two weeks of March 2020 "significantly impacted sales and gross profit for Q1; sales were adversely impacted by approximately $125m in the quarter, while gross profit was impacted by approximately $50m compared to previous company expectations."
The company reported a Q1 net loss of $5m, or $0.09 per diluted share, compared with net income of $48m, or $0.78 per diluted share, for Q1 2019. First quarter reported net loss was $0.09 per share; adjusted net income for the same period was $0.22 per share.
The company entered into an incremental $300m 364-day unsecured term-loan facility on April 9, 2020, further increasing its liquidity position. Cash on hand at April 23, 2020 was $475m along with $250m currently available under the company’s revolving line of credit.
Gross profit decreased -17% to $293m for Q1; reported gross profit margin was 20.8% percent of sales for Q1, down 272 basis points compared to 23.6% of sales for Q1 2019. Operating expenses increased +6% for Q1 to $307m, or 21.9% of sales. Operating expenses in dollars and as a percent of sales increased primarily due to incurred expenses for ongoing investment in research and development and strategic projects before the COVID-19 pandemic began to impact demand.
Income from Financial Services was $20m for Q1 (+5%) primarily due to a change in retail financing programmes. Interest expense was $16m for Q1 due to lower average daily debt levels and lower interest rates.
Global Adjacent Markets segment sales, including PG&A, decreased -6% to $98m in Q1; Aftermarket segment sales decreased -8% to $202m; Boats segment sales decreased -16% to $155m. Overall Parts, Garments and Accessories (“PG&A”) sales were +7% for Q1; international sales to customers outside of North America, including PG&A, were -11% at $182m.
Net cash used for operating activities was $71m for the three months ended March 31, 2020, compared to $38m for the same period in 2019. Total debt at March 31, 2020, including finance lease obligations and notes payable, was $2,164m. The company’s debt-to-total capital ratio was 68 percent at March 31, 2020 compared to 71 percent at March 31, 2019. Cash and cash equivalents were $424m at March 31, 2020, up from $151m at March 31, 2019.

Rieju

Rieju

In line with the regulations announced by the Spanish government, Figueres, Girona based Rieju has furloughed its staff and suspended all operations, initially until April 13th, but as elsewhere, that is expected to be extended until at least the end of April.

Before the factory shut down, the company had reached an agreement with Torrot Electric Europa (Salt, Girona), the former GasGas parent company, to acquire the Enduro motorcycle platform intellectual and industrial property that was not sold to KTM. The well-known Spanish Enduro machines are a perfect 'gap-filler' in the Rieju range and will now be manufactured and marketed under the Rieju brand.
Under the GasGas banner, Torrot launched the range of 250 and 300 cc EC, XC and GP in 2-stroke singles in 2017, adding the 300 cc Ranger in 2019. Torrot is said to have sold some 4,500 units of the range in more than 50 countries in the three years since the launch. Rieju, S.A. will manufacture these very latest Enduro models at its plant in Figueres and at the time the deal was done had hoped to be able to be distributing them from June 2020.
