Kellermann

Kellermann 'Dayron' - ECE-approved intelligent DRL system with smart control

Award-winning German lights manufacturer Kellermann is internationally respected for innovative, high quality, ECE-approved LED lighting solutions that set the benchmark for durability, design and safety.

New to its range is Dayron - the world's first high-performance daytime running light for motorcycles with intelligent light control and ECE approval.

Described as "the world's first motorcycle lighting technology that can be completely integrated into the onboard electronics of the motorcycle", Dayron is offered as a pure daytime running light with position light and as the Dayron i, a daytime running light with position light and indicator function.

"No other manufacturer in the world has a comparable innovative lighting product in its range - Kellermann is successfully breaking new ground and creating a complete system solution for modern motorcycles," says CEO Stefan Woeste.

"The Dayron daytime running light system is installed with the support of motorcycle-specific plug and play solutions. The integration into the onboard electronics of the motorcycle is done by the DRL device (Daytime Running Light module). This intelligent DRL device controls the perfect coordination and communication of all components with the motorcycle's onboard electronics.

"The system also delivers automatic light control between low beam, daytime running light and the position light - as required by law in Europe. Kellermann is therefore the only manufacturer to date to offer a retrofit daytime running light with ECE approval for installation on the latest generation of motorcycles."

Dayron features a unique, new, brilliant luminous surface "with outstanding new lens technology. It can replace the existing daytime running light as well as position light and turn signals and features automatic deactivation of daytime running light and position light during turn signal operation".

The system is completely integrated into the onboard electronics and installation is 100 percent plug and play with model-specific add-on kits. There is automatic switching of the daytime running light to position light when low beam is activated.

It is permanently illuminated when the low beam is switched off. When the low beam is switched on, the daytime running light automatically switches to position light mode. If the indicator signal of the Dayron i is activated, the daytime running light is automatically deactivated temporarily and the indicator signal lights up on the full surface area.

The auxiliary lights and other functions can continue to be operated as normal after the daytime running light system has been installed.

"With the highest light output of all ECE-approved daytime running lights on the market, the Dayron ensures greater visibility of the motorcycle and thus reduces the risk of accidents. Thanks to the sensational brightness, every motorcycle with Dayron daytime running lights is seen much better by other road users during the day and at dusk - increasing safety through increased visibility.

"Kellermann is the first manufacturer worldwide to offer the Dayron i with the combination of daytime running light and turn signal. With the Dayron i, the entire light surface changes from white to yellow during the indicator signal process. This light power and signal effect combination is legally available only from Kellermann".

Dayron is built into a high quality, black, flow-optimised aluminium casing with M8 x 20 mm mounting adapter. The LED technology features Kellermann's Long-Life Protection Guard, is IC controlled, runs at 330 kHz and is suitable for 12 volt DC applications.

Initially, this intelligent system solution is available for the Harley-Davidson Pan America ADV models and the BMW R 1250 GS and R nineT model range, with other brands and models to follow later.

Suzuki Motor Corporation

Suzuki announces Growth Strategy for FY2030

Suzuki Motor Corporation has announced its Growth Strategy for FY2030 with the motto to deliver "value-packed products" by focusing on the customer. Suzuki says it will carry out "its unique Growth Strategy for FY2030 by operating under the principle of manufacturing 'Sho-Sho-Kei-Tan-Bi (Smaller, Fewer, Lighter, Shorter, Beauty)' 'Lean Management', which emphasizes flexibility, agility and the challenging spirit, and the 'Three Actuals' principle, which omits impracticality and focuses on the actual place, thing and situation".

For FY2030, Suzuki says it "will contribute to the realisation of a carbon neutral society and the economic growth of emerging countries such as India, ASEAN and Africa, with our main business regions, Japan, India and Europe, as the core.

"We will focus on creating solutions that are unique to Suzuki, which are to develop products and services focused on the customer and grow along with the operating countries and regions.

"Based on the target date set by each government, Suzuki aims to achieve carbon neutrality in Japan and Europe by 2050 and in India by 2070. We will continue to strive to achieve our carbon neutral goals for each region, based on our mindset to expand our customers' choices and deliver products and services that meet the needs of each region.

'we will introduce a battery small to mid-sized motorcycle in FY2024'

"For small and mid-sized motorcycles, which are used for daily transportation such as commuting to work, school or shopping, we will introduce a battery EV in FY2024. We plan to launch eight models by FY2030 with a battery EV ratio of 25%. For large motorcycles for leisure purposes, we are considering adopting carbon neutral fuels".

Suzuki says it will challenge itself to achieve carbon neutrality of domestic plants in FY2035. "We are promoting the Suzuki Smart Factory Creation by drawing out how manufacturing should be in 2030, so that we continue to become a company that secures people's means of mobility worldwide. By combining Suzuki's principle of manufacturing 'Sho-Sho-Kei-Tan-Bi (Smaller, Fewer, Lighter, Shorter, Beauty)' with digitalisation, we will optimise, minimise and simplify the flow of data, things and energy. Through these initiatives, we will become lean and tackle carbon neutrality".

At the Hamamatsu Plant, which is the motorcycle production hub, Suzuki says that the plant will now target to achieve carbon neutrality in FY2027, earlier than its initial target of 2030, doing so through reduction of energy use and conversion into renewable energy, including the expansion of solar power generation facilities.

'carbon neutrality at the Hamamatsu Plant in FY2030 is now targeted for 2027 - three years earlier than previously planned'

"By utilising the know-hows earned at the Hamamatsu Plant to other plants, we will make initiatives to achieve carbon neutrality of all domestic plants in FY2035. We will invest 2tn yen in R&D expenses and 2.5tn yen in capital expenditures, a total of 4.5tn yen by FY2030 - of which 2tn yen will be electrification-related investments, with 500bn yen of that going into battery-related investments.

"Consolidated net sales forecast for FY2022 is 4.5tn yen, which is growing at a pace to exceed the 4.8tn yen target for FY2025 set in the mid-term management plan. We would like to grow in line with the emerging countries by contributing to their growth. We will challenge ourselves to double the FY2021 net sales result of 3.5tn yen to 7tn yen in FY2030".

Can-Am

Can-Am's Hub-Steered Triple

By Ben Purvis

Can-Am will return to the two-wheeler market after decades away when it launches its Pulse and Origin electric bikes - part of a modular range of battery-powered machines - in 2024.

However, a newly published patent application shows that a radical combustion-engined machine has also been under development.

The bike shown in the document features a selection of unusual design elements, including the hub-center steering system that's the basis of the patent - plus an inline three-cylinder engine and a continuously variable transmission.

It's a design that clearly shares much of its DNA with Can-Am's gasoline-powered three-wheelers, the Spyder and Ryker ranges, adopting a similar long, low profile to those machines, but eliminating one of the front wheels. The Ryker, in particular, is closely related to the new design, lending its engine and transmission to the project.

At the moment, the Ryker can be had with a choice of a 600 cc twin-cylinder or 900 cc three-cylinder engine, both made by Can-Am's Austria based sister company Rotax and allied to a twist-and-go CVT transmission. The same powertrain appears to feature in the new two-wheeler, with the drawings showing something that looks like the larger three-cylinder Ryker engine nestled in its trellis-style frame.

'crazy-looking creation emerges in patent application'

Like the Ryker, it carries the engine longitudinally. Only Triumph's Rocket 3 shares a similar layout with a three-cylinder engine. The suspension that's the focus of the patent is intended to maximize the potential lean angle and to limit the number of linkages needed in the steering system.

It features two parallel front suspension links, with an upright at the front, giving a single-sided appearance. While rival hub-steered bikes like Bimota's Tesi aim to maintain a conventional riding position, with the bars above the front wheel, the Can-Am puts the rider further back, as on the Ryker and Spyder trikes.

That layout means there can be a steering column running down from the bars to a position behind the front wheel, with a pitman arm and a tie rod transferring the steering movement to the wheel. It's a setup that has fewer joints and linkages than most other hub-steered bikes, potentially reducing vagueness in the steering and improving feedback.

The weight distribution, with the rider positioned so far back, will clearly be closer to a cruiser than a sports bike, but the hub-steered front end means the rake and trail can be tweaked to whatever geometry the company wants.

As with other front swingarm systems, the suspension also separates braking and suspension forces, allowing softer springing without introducing dive when you're on the brakes.

Although Can-Am's initial motorcycle plans are all electric, the company isn't tied purely to battery power. The existence of the Spyder, Ryker and an array of Can-Am ATV and side-by-side models shows that the combustion engine still plays a big role in the brand's future, so a motorcycle using the same power source could well join the electric bikes once the company has re-established itself in the two-wheeled market.

Yamaha Motor

Yamaha Motor First to Use 'Green Aluminum' in Japanese Motorcycles

Yamaha Motor announced that it has reached an agreement with an aluminum ingot supplier for the procurement of 'green aluminum' and has begun using it as a raw material for parts in Yamaha motorcycles from February 2023.

This is the first time that the material has been used in Japanese motorcycles and Yamaha Motor plans to gradually expand its usage in models going forward as part of its plan to adopt low-carbon aluminum in the drive toward carbon-neutral materials.

'Green aluminum' is aluminum that is refined using renewable energy sources to emit around 60% less CO2 in its manufacture compared to traditionally refined aluminum. "Of course, the percentage of less emissions by renewable energy depends per manufacturer. Aluminum parts account for 12% to 31% of the total vehicle weight of a motorcycle, so adopting 'green aluminum' is one effective approach for reducing CO₂ emissions from the raw material manufacturing part of a product’s life cycle (it falls under Scope 3 Category 1 emissions for supply chains).

"Through the development of its engineering and production technologies and expertise, Yamaha Motor has actively pushed the use of recycled aluminum, which now comprises some 80% of Yamaha Motor's aluminum usage.

"This introduction of 'green aluminum' is meant to complement this and will be employed for parts that still cannot be manufactured with recycled materials. As a first step, Yamaha Motor will utilize green aluminum for certain parts in its large-displacement and off-road competition motorcycles, and Yamaha Motor plans to expand the number of models using the material in the future as available supply volumes allow."

In line with the Yamaha Motor Group Environmental Plan 2050, the company is aiming to achieve carbon neutrality throughout all of its business activities - including its entire supply chain - by 2050.

Zero Motorcycle

Zero - SR-X Concept

This SR-X Concept is the latest result from Zero Motorcycle's 'Future Development Program' and of its ongoing collaboration with Bill Webb at San Francisco based Huge Design.

The 'Future Development Program' "brings together some of the industry's most talented designers and engineers, combining Zero's engineering and product teams to push the boundaries of what's possible with electric motorcycles."

Zero goes on to state: "Bill Webb from Huge Design has played a key role in Zero's vision for the future. He inspired the popular FXE motorcycle by designing its concept bike predecessor. The SR-X is the latest example of his visionary concepts and Zero's commitment to innovation. This semi-faired concept bike showcases Zero's industry-leading electric powertrain and boasts both performance and style."

Bill Webb says: "The SR-X concept bike strives to hit a design sweet spot for the near future of electric motorcycles by combining clean lines and disciplined design-detailing with the aggressive stance and raw performance found in modern liter bikes.

'something between a streetfighter and a track bike'

"This bike is an attempt to define a new sub-category for high performance electric - something between a streetfighter and a track bike. We wanted true sport riders to appreciate the subtle and balanced design approach - modern, futuristic and clean without sacrificing the raw-performance look and overtly mechanical appeal of high-performance motorcycles.

"The team wanted to create a dramatic and low 'front-heavy' silhouette with the bodywork that could juxtapose the fully exposed mechanicals towards the back of the bike in an unconventional way. The SR/S chassis/mechanicals that Zero designed are impressive to look at, and we wanted the raw bike underneath to be part of the final composition."

'low, front-heavy silhouette'

Zero's VP of Product Development, Bill Wismann, added: "Working with Bill on the SM concept and FXE over the past few years has led to a great partnership with Huge Design. When we originally spoke about the SR-X project, I couldn't wait to see Bill's clean, structured aesthetic applied to our premium sport platform. The result exceeds expectations and points the way forward for our internal design teams."

If it makes it to production, Zero says that the SR-X would be powered by its "advanced" ZF75-10 electric motor and latest ZF17.3 lithium-ion battery." There is no indication at this stage as to whether or not the SR-X will transition from concept to showroom, but either way it is an interesting and business-like statement of intent as it, and indeed the whole electric PTW market, continues to explore and develop its "art of the possible."

Scorpion Sports Europe

Carbon Street Fighter

Launched to critical acclaim earlier this year as part of its 2022 product line-up, the Scorpion EXO HX1 Carbon SE (ECE 22-06) Carbon Street Fighter is a "versatile neo-retro" helmet in Ultra-TCT carbon fibre shell - a Thermodynamical Composite Technology shell - essentially pre-preg fibreglass with, typically, a 3k carbon outer coating. The fibre matrix has progressive crumple impact energy absorption properties - Scorpion call it "digressive integrity on impact" and claim that it "absorbs more energy".

This delivers the look of a full carbon helmet, and much of the impact protection, but at a lower cost than full carbon. Scorpion's track record using composites, including fibreglass, is excellent, and this Ultra-TCT Carbon is feature-rich with micrometric closure, "Aero-Tuned" ventilation, eyewear- friendly, removable and washable, hypoallergenic and breathable Kwikwick3 internal cushion and patented magnetic visor opening system.

Additional features include an internal retractable sun visor to give maximum comfort and maximum visibility, Pinlock 100% Max Vision 3D, EXO-COM ready (the new Bluetooth 5 Scorpion intercom with DynaMESH connection), nasal deflector (to prevent fogging of the visor), double air intakes (chin guard and upper part of the shell) - all in a package that weighs in at around 1,390 g, with a five-year warranty.

Duell Corporation

Duell has agreed to acquire UK based TranAm

Mustasaari, Finland based Duell Corporation has acquired 100 percent of the share capital in respected UK based importer and distributor TranAm - a leading player in the UK market with a strong reputation in the premium motorcycle apparel and accessories sectors.

A latest stage in Duell's growth strategy in support of its geographical expansion and brand portfolio development, "the acquisition significantly strengthens Duell's foothold in the large UK market and provides a platform for future growth.

"Through the acquisition, Duell will gain access to the most important retail chains in the UK and can achieve cross-selling synergies by utilising TranAm's wide dealer network to sell selected Duell house brands. Additionally, Duell expects to achieve post-Brexit operational benefits by delivering products directly to and from TranAm's UK warehouse.

"In total, the acquisition is expected to bring annual cost synergies of around € 200,000, which are expected to be realised within 12 months of the closing of the transaction. Duell acquires the entire share capital and full voting rights of TranAm for a total purchase price of £11.875m.

"TranAm has a strong balance sheet with a net cash position and high profitability, which, combined with the contemplated equity issue to finance the acquisition, strengthens Duell's financial position."

Founded in 1976, TranAm had net sales of £10.7m and EBITA of £2.1m in fiscal year ending March 31, 2022 (unaudited, according to UK GAAP). TranAm offers its products to over 400 dealers.

The motorcycle category represents over 90% of sales, while simultaneously the company also has a smaller offering of ski, snowboarding and pet accessories. TranAm currently employs 28 people and has its office and warehouse in New Milton, UK. The business was built and is owned by the Lloyd family. Duell plans to merge TranAm's operations with its existing UK operations.

Pete Lloyd, TranAm's Managing Director and one of its current owners, will continue to head the operations after the acquisition.

Jarkko Ämmälä, CEO of Duell, said: "I am very pleased that we can significantly strengthen our market position in the UK. The acquisition of TranAm provides us with fast access to the large UK market and a strong foothold to further grow our business by also bringing our own brands to a wide range of consumers in the UK through TranAm's existing distribution channels. TranAm has been very successful with motorcycle clothing business."

Pete Lloyd commented: "I am delighted to join our forces with Duell to grow our business jointly and as part of one of Europe's leading powersports wholesalers. I believe we will achieve significant sales synergies by offering a more comprehensive product portfolio to our established customer base."

The acquisition will have no impact on Duell's financial outlook for the financial year 2023 or on the company's medium-term financial targets.

Moto Morini

Moto Morini developing 750 cc and 1200 cc V-twins

By Ben Purvis

Moto Morini has had the sort of typically turbulent history that's often associated with Italian motorcycle brands, but after dipping in and out of solvency for years and even an extended period of dormancy from 1993 to 2004, it finally has some solid footing after being bought by China's Zhongneng Vehicle Group in 2018.

Currently offering a four-model range based around two bikes, the adventure-style X-Cape 650 and retro Seiemmezzo street bike, both with the same 650 cc, CFMoto-based parallel twin engine, Morini has plans for substantial expansion, bringing back the 1,187cc V-twin engine that appeared when the brand was revived in 2004, but also launching a range of new models with an as-yet unseen 750 cc V-twin.

X-Cape 650

The largest engine, which powered several models until it was forced off sale by Euro 4 emissions limits, will return in revised form in the X-Cape 1200 adventure bike, which has appeared in China in prototype form, and as a set of detailed design registrations, but the 750 cc engine is more of a mystery.

The 750 cc bikes have been confirmed via documents filed with the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) in the USA, part of Morini's official return to the U.S. market. These documents explain how to decode the VINs of the company's bikes, explaining the meaning of each set of numbers and letters. The document shows that while bikes with 'M' in the fifth position of the VIN will use the 61 hp, 649 cc parallel twin that's in the X-Cape 650 and Seiemmezzo machines, there will also be bikes that have a 'U' as the fifth digit. This, according to the document, means they will have a 750 cc V-twin, liquid-cooled engine making an impressive 97 hp.

1200 V-twin

It's not clear whether the 750 engine will be manufactured by Morini or, like the 650 twin, be bought-in from another brand, but there are few candidates that match that 750 cc capacity and 97 hp output. The old Aprilia Shiver 750 engine would match those numbers, and is due to be reintroduced in 900 cc form by China's Zongshen in the near future, so could be a candidate.

It's also unknown what type of bikes the new engine will go into, although Morini's current range of adventure bikes and retro roadsters is a good indication of the markets that the brand is targeting.

MBP motorcycles

MBP motorcycles bring big Chinese bikes to the West

By Ben Purvis

MBP isn't a familiar name in motorcycling, but the brand has appeared on the market from nowhere with an extensive range of machines from 125 cc scooters to 1000 cc V-twins.

Founded in 2022 by Keeway, MBP's initials stand for Moto Bologna Passione, reflecting the company's design team in Italy. Like several other Chinese-owned Italian brands, the bikes themselves will be manufactured in China, and the initial range has been created in part by borrowing models that are already in production under other names.

roadster

From the get-go, MBP has a 13-bike range, with four scooters, four roadster-style bikes, three adventure bikes and two cruisers. Eight of the initial bikes are 125 cc singles, including three of the scooters, three of the roadsters and two adventure bikes. Of the others, there's a 300 cc twist-and-go scooter - the SC300 - and four larger bikes, the M502N roadster, the T1002V adventure bike and the C650V and C1002V cruisers.

While unfamiliar to most western eyes, most of those bigger bikes will be familiar to Chinese riders. The M502N and C1002V are both from the Gaokin stable - the brand that manufactures Brixton models for the European market. The M502N is known in China as the Gaokin Flame 500, using the same 50 hp, 486 cc parallel twin that's used in the Brixton Crossfire 500, but with an up-to-date look instead of the Brixton's semi-retro style. The C1002V was recently launched in China as the Gaokin V1000 Thor, using a 997 cc, 94 hp, water-cooled V-twin engine. The same engine is also in the MBP T1002V adventure bike, but that machine doesn't appear to have been shown under another brand name in China.

Gaokin isn't MBP's only supplier, as the smaller MBP C650V cruiser has previously been seen in China as the Longjia V-Bob 650 (smaller 125 cc and 250 cc Longjia V-Bob models are sold in the West under the Bullit and Bluroc brand names), using a 447 cc V-twin, making 68 hp.

C1002V cruiser

The most interesting model in European markets is, without doubt, the T1002V adventure bike. Weighing in at 235 kg dry, its power and weight figures are competitive against several existing models in the segment, and components like J.Juan brakes and KYB suspension are familiar from a host of budget models. Like most of the company's bikes, it's due to hit the market in the first part of 2023.

An addendum to the MBP story is that the same company that has trademarked the brand's name and logos - Powerlink Technology - has also applied for trademark rights to the Morbidelli name, as well as the titles 'Morbidelli MBP' and 'Morbidelli MBP Pesaro'. While these applications may come to nothing, they indicate that the old Morbidelli brand name could return to motorcycles in the future, perhaps on MBP machines.

Barkbusters owner Bruce Collins explains that "with handlebars being one of the places the body connects with the bike when riding, handlebars play an important role in grip and handling. Our research has identified that design is one of the most important factors when choosing the correct handlebar grips.

"It is vital for the rider's hands to stick to the grips allowing for superior steer and brake control. Using a dual rubber compound, our Barkbusters branded crossover diamond shape pattern is specifically designed for exceptional grip. The dual compound construction inner layer features a harder compound rubber, holding the grips' form and preventing slippage or twisting on the handlebar.

"The outer layer is a softer rubber compound to provide increased comfort. The texture of the grip is super soft whilst still being thick for extra comfort in a slimline design.

"Barkbusters is closely associated with safety around the handlebar and our dealers have been suggesting we should add a range of grips to the brand offer. But we didn't want to just buy in any grips, we needed them to be identifiable as Barkbusters in their quality, form and function.

"OEM grips are usually a price-point compromise, but upgrading the grips is a simple yet hugely effective way for riders to improve comfort and safety on any motorcycle - by preventing hand slippage and reducing hand fatigue with our ultimate shock-absorbing compound. They also offer a cushioned grip and reduce vibrations through the hand.

"The universal fit allows for use on many motorcycles from street, dirt or dual sport and is easily installed. They are also compatible with other Barkbusters products, completing the look of the bike. The length is 118 mm with a 30.49 mm outer diameter."

TracTive Suspension

TracTive Suspension for KTM 1290 Super Adventure R

With a pedigree that makes designing KTM suspension upgrades a natural fit for the Dutch suspension specialist, TracTive says that "after the success of the latest 890 Adventure R, it is the 1290 Super Adventure R's turn. This adventure bike fits very well into TracTive Suspension's model range; a powerful motorcycle made for adventure and world travel".

For the front forks, TracTive Suspension has developed a closed cartridge kit, a pressurized system using a large 35 mm piston for optimal damping performance and a wide adjustment range. To prevent diving of the fork, the kit comes as standard with firmer springs - but like all TracTive products, the springs are always based on the riders' preferences.

For the rear, TracTive made an X-TREME shock with its integrated PDS II anti-bottoming system, a hydraulic preload adjuster, high and low speed compression and rebound damping adjustment; the damping can be adjusted when and as needed.

Wind Trading

Ravenna Motorcycle Fashion collection

Comfort, design, and technical features dominate Wind Trading's Ravenna Motorcycle Fashion 2023 collection, a "high quality-price ratio" along and deep inventory to keep the sales flowing. The range is fully CE homologated and includes leather suits, adventure and touring waterproof jackets and pants, summer jackets and gloves.

"Ravenna Motorcycle Fashion provides great margins to dealers and distributors despite an extremely low stock investment," says CEO John Boni. "The new collection is now available and in stock for shipping throughout Europe from our warehouse in Italy. Ravenna is a 'Dealer Friendly', feature-rich price-point range that includes less than 12 items to cover all the most important sales opportunities, in several colour combinations.

"Entirely designed in Italy, despite the extremely competitive price it is a quality programme. We created it to answer the need our own dealers in Italy have always faced - for an Italian designed and branded range that combines design, quality materials and safety, but at a price that riders can afford.

"We have achieved this with the Ravenna, Collection, and can offer it exclusively worldwide with full margins to dealers and distributors."

NEXX

NEXX 2023 - "More life, less footprint"

"A new generation of safety" is how Portuguese helmet manufacturer NEXX refers to the X-PRO carbon technology introduced less than two years ago, and which will be extended to the brand's different premium ranges in 2023.

Helder Loureiro, NEXX CEO and co-founder

"Designed for professional and weight-conscious riders, this state-of-the-art technology combines aerospace expertise with 3K carbon mesh for a unique layering that makes the shell lighter, stronger and more comfortable".

ZERO in X-PRO CARBON

For 2023, the already ECE 22.06 homologated X.R3R range sees the addition of a wide variety of new models and "bold graphics", such as the new X.R3R HAGIBIS, in X-PRO CARBON carbon fibre and translucent varnish in purple tones, and the new X.R3R IZO with MotoGP style "crazy graphics".

The ZERO PRO versions, in X-PRO CARBON carbon fibre, also extend to the X.WRL (Wild Rally) and X.WED2 (Wild Enduro) Adventure ranges.

In addition, there are new graphics and new colours in the SX.100R, X.G100R (classic line) and X.G20 ranges - "one of the few ECE 22-06 approved open-face helmets currently available on the market".

According to Helder Loureiro, CEO and co-founder of NEXX, "we want to inspire and encourage different lifestyles around motorised two wheels with a collection that provides peace of mind, comfort and versatility - for use throughout the year, prepared for the most extreme conditions.

"The new NEXX 2023 collection is full of highly technical models with cutting-edge safety, functionality and design. At the same time, we are also very attentive to everything that is happening in the world.

"True to our 'Helmets for life' commitment, we started the project 'More life, less footprint', which includes a series of partnerships that aim to reduce industrial waste and minimise our environmental footprint.

"The Ergo Padding System is no longer included as a standard accessory in our helmets. This decision resulted from a study we carried out, where we concluded that only a small percentage of our users felt the need to use this extra foam kit for a better fit; this accessory remains available on request. This year we will introduce a new model of recycled cardboard box for helmets, with lower production time and reduced consumption of water-based paint, and all our product manuals are now available in digital format."

KTM

KTM LC8c engine nearly ready
by Ben Purvis

KTM's parallel twin LC8c engine has proved to be an extraordinarily adaptable engine since it debuted in the 790 Duke in 2018 - appearing in two capacities and powering adventure bikes, roadsters and even the track-only RC-8C race-rep - but it's about to be superseded by a completely new design that will be the basis of KTM's next generation of Duke and Adventure middleweights as well as the highly anticipated RC990 sports bike.

These are the first pictures of the new engine, which have emerged via design registrations from KTM's joint venture with CFMoto, manufacturer of KTM's current parallel twin engines. They reveal a design that carries over key design elements of the original LC8c - initials that stand for 'Liquid-Cooled, 8-valve, compact' - but is almost entirely new when it comes to the major castings and components.

The evolution is believed to be down to the engine's growth to nearly 1000 cc in its next-generation form. The original LC8c was launched as a 799 cc engine, the '790', and grew to 889 cc in '890' form thanks to a bigger bore, increasing from 88 mm to 90.7 mm while retaining the original 68.8 mm stroke. To grow again - rumours say the next version will be called '990' and have a capacity of around that mark - the LC8c needs a longer stroke, hence the redesign.

These images show that the cylinders of the new LC8c are taller than the current design, indicating the longer stroke, while the cylinder head has been redesigned to be more compact, allowing the overall size to be essentially unchanged. The engine mounts are in the same positions as before, allowing the new engine to be bolted to existing frames if required, but all the castings for the engine block, cylinders and head are new.

Other changes include a completely redesigned oil sump, with its main capacity moved to one side to make space for an under-engine exhaust system and catalytic converter, while the rear part of the transmission case has been cut back to make more space for suspension components.

The new engine has been spied undergoing tests in prototypes for the next-generation '990' Duke and the RS990 sports bike, which will be KTM's first fully-faired, high-performance street bike since the original RC8 superbike was discontinued. The naked 990 Duke street bike is expected to be the first to reach production, probably as a 2024 model. When it arrives, it's likely to replace the current 890 Duke, although the older LC8c engine will remain in production for the more affordable 790 Duke and the Adventure models that currently use it, as well as the CFMoto 800MT and 800NK. Over the following years, the 990 Adventure and RC990 are expected to arrive as the updated LC8c becomes KTM's main engine for its middleweight line-up.
