Piaggio Group

Piaggio Decarbonisation Plan

Piaggio Group (PIA.MI) is the latest manufacturer to unveil a Decarbonisation Plan, undertaking to put concrete measures in place to contribute to the attainment of the climate goals set by the European Union.

"The Piaggio Group has always been sensitive to environmental issues and, over the years, has constantly organised initiatives to improve energy efficiency and reduce the emissions of its factories and the vehicles it manufactures.

"Between 1998 and 2022, its Pontedera factory cut Scope 1 emissions by 56.2%, thanks to investment in energy efficiency, while improvements to the new engines on the best-selling Vespa 125 cc scooter made a 29.4% reduction in Scope 3 carbon emissions possible from 2008 to 2022."

Drawn up with advisory support from the European Investment Bank (EIB), in line with the EIB PATH framework and the support of EY Consulting (engaged by the EIB), the strategy "will enable the Group to plan measures to reduce its Scope 1, 2 and 3 footprint emissions over two-time horizons: 2030 and 2050".

Vespa Primavera

"Specifically, by 2030, the Group undertakes to cut its production emissions (estimated using the Science-Based Targets initiative1 methodology and in line with the goals of the Paris agreement) by 42% compared with 2022. This ambitious target will be achieved through a range of initiatives."

Initiatives will include:

  • Restructuring of the Mandello del Lario production site in line with sustainability criteria
  • Installation of photovoltaic systems at Pontedera and Mandello del Lario
  • Installation of a new paint plant in Vietnam to enable diesel to be replaced with LPG
  • The purchase of clean energy for the factories in Italy, India, Vietnam and Indonesia
  • The replacement of company cars with more energy-efficient models

The Piaggio Group also intends to achieve a further reduction in its Scope 3 emissions through increased sales of electric vehicles, improvements to its combustion engines, developments in product design and adaptation for alternative fuels, which can already be used with the engines currently on Piaggio vehicles.

Piaggio says it has already brought to market a number of new products reflecting this commitment, such as the electric Vespa Primavera and Vespa Sprint scooters, and has announced the launch of the electric Porter NP6 project.

The Piaggio Group believes that to reach the target set by the international community for 2050 (a 90% reduction in emissions), a crucial role will be played by diversified technologies such as e-fuel and biofuels, wide use of electric vehicles, total use of renewable energy, electrification of heating systems, logistics with low environmental impact, recycled materials and product circularity.

Vespa Sprint

Piaggio says that it "does not rely on offsets to meet its emission-reduction targets" and further details on its decarbonisation goals will be published by April 2024 in the Non-Financial Disclosure included in the Piaggio Group 2023 Annual Report.

Piaggio is also making a € 250,000 donation to the "Fresh Start Fund" set up by the Pontedera Town Council in response to the territorial emergency caused by heavy rain and flooding on 2 November 2023.

BMW Motorrad

BMW Motorrad - 2023 record unit sales

BMW Motorrad says it has crowned its centenary year with the highest sales in its history - a total of 209,257 motorcycles and scooters delivered to customers in the calendar year - an increase of +3.1% year-on-year, its highest-ever sales.

The much-hyped new 1300 cc iteration of BMW's category-defining GS ADV platform is expected to sell record numbers in 2024.

The company says that its Europe, Asia, North and Latin America regions, in particular, all posted "new sales highs and made a vital contribution to BMW Motorrad's record sales.

"The brand's compelling line-up, with successful products that define its respective segments, along with the market introduction of popular new models, like the powerful M 1000 R and the iconic R 1300 GS touring enduro, were strong factors in its successful performance in 2023".

For Q4 2023, worldwide unit sales were 44,348, which was +1.8% on the final quarter of 2022 - itself a record year for BMW Motorrad.

Said to be a "passionate rider", Markus Flasch has replaced Markus Schramm as the Head of BMW Motorrad, having held vehicle development and conception roles since he joined the company in 2025.

QJMotor

QJMotor developing electronic clutch By Ben Purvis

Virtually every modern motorcycle already uses a ride-by-wire throttle that eliminates the mechanical link between your right hand and the butterflies, so it's not a giant leap to suggest the same idea could be applied to other controls. Now China's QJMotor is working on an electronic clutch actuator that opens the door to a wide range of semi-automatic transmission options.

Revealed in a patent filed in China, the electronic clutch is actually quite simple. It features an actuator made of an electric motor and a small reduction gearbox that turns a shaft with a cam on it that engages or disengages the clutch. The actuator is mounted on the clutch cover and the system doesn't need any changes deeper in the engine, so the same thinking and components could be applied to a variety of different motors. In QJMotor's patent, it's shown on the company's 693 cc parallel twin.

In its simplest form, the electronic clutch is, in operation, indistinguishable from a conventional cable or hydraulic design. There's still a lever on the bars, but instead of a mechanical connection to the clutch, it only needs some electrical cables. A sensor on the clutch lever monitors its position and, via an electronic control unit, transmits that position to the actuator on the clutch housing.

Even in that, basic form, it opens up several possibilities. For instance, the actuator and ECU could be programmed to stop the clutch from being released too fast, or to stop it from being slipped excessively. It could also be mapped to give a more gradual, progressive feel at the lever, be programmed to disengage the clutch if the bike is about to stall, or work in harmony with the ride-by-wire throttle to ensure the clutch and throttle are perfectly balanced when you pull away, even if the actual inputs at the controls are 'off'.

The idea also opens the door to more sophisticated developments. Working with a ride-by-wire throttle and a conventional quickshifter, the electronic clutch could be programmed to make the clutch lever on the bars entirely redundant. It could automatically disengage the clutch when you come to a halt and feed it back in when you open the throttle to pull away.

If a simple electronic actuator was added to the shift lever as well, the same system could easily be adapted for fully automatic gearchanges or a pushbutton shift on the bars, all without making in-depth engineering changes to the engine and transmission themselves.

The engine that the system is illustrated on in QJMotor's patent is already used on the SRK700 model and the Benelli TRK702, both models that are already offered globally.

INTERMOT

All change for annual INTERMOT

Cologne, December 5-8, 2024

Stung by the impact that EICMA has had on it (especially since ANCMA's decision to make EICMA an annual show some 20 years ago) and faced with a lingering decline in exhibitor reputation that pre-dates Covid, INTERMOT has finally embraced the inevitable and announced that it is to be held annually from 2024, on a new, later date (December 5-8) but still at Koelnmesse (Cologne), Germany.

Described as being "perfectly timed for getting a new season of biking off to a great start in the following spring" the organisers have clearly wanted to make sure that the expo still falls within the motorcycle trade and dealer marketing cycle and 'selling-in' season, and are pointing to being able to capitalise on the fact that, having been unveiled a month earlier at Milan, INTERMOT will be able to restore the consumer appeal of hosting the upcoming new season's new motorcycle models.

"All the new models [will be] on display at INTERMOT - it’s a chance to not only see them, but also to actually touch and experience them in person. At INTERMOT, the teams of motorbike and scooter manufacturers and importers will be on hand to offer advice and help everyone find their dream bike and, of course, the right accessories for both rider and vehicle".

The increasing preference for OE manufacturers to delay the timing of new model launches by a month, for EICMA rather than Cologne, had become a major issue with visitors and for the exhibitor community and, therefore, for the show organisers.

That said, the effect that the 2020 pandemic had on permanently driving most new model introductions online has changed that once traditional 'hook' for all shows, forever.

Show organiser Koelnmesse went on to say that it and the event’s conceptual sponsor, the German Motorcycle Industry Association (IVM e.V.), "aim to offer trade visitors and end consumers all the information they need, as well as a completely new way to enjoy the run-up to Christmas and the shopping that goes with it. Of course, there will also be an event programme geared to the season.

"Even before registration officially opens, the four-day event’s new concept has already won over major market players such as BMW Motorrad Germany, Kawasaki Motors Europe N.V. and Yamaha Motor Europe N.V., who have already announced that they’ll be participating".

More news about the new concept, the programme and the visitor experience will be announced throughout the year.

Suzuki

GSX-8R leads new 2024 Suzukis By Ben Purvis

As sales of 200 hp superbikes continue to decline, a new market for softer, gentler sports-style machines is beginning to bloom, and Suzuki's new GSX-8R is the company's first step into it.

Appearing as a rival to sub-100 hp, practical sports bikes like the Yamaha R7, Aprilia's RS660 and Honda's CBR650R, the GSX-8R is a straightforward derivative of the GSX-8S naked roadster that was launched 12 months ago, using the same engine and frame but with sportier styling.

GSX-8R

That engine is Suzuki's new 776 cc, 61 kW (82 hp) parallel twin, which was under development for a decade before reaching production in 2023's GSX-8S and V-Strom 800DE. Prioritising usability and a broad spread of performance over headline-grabbing peak numbers, it's an engine that's already getting plenty of praise, and the GSX-8R provides its most exciting platform yet.

While the frame is from the GSX-8S, the GSX-8R gets new Showa suspension instead of the roadster's KYB components, promising sharper handling. It's paired with a strong electronics package including three-level traction control, multiple riding modes and a standard bidirectional quickshifter, plus the inevitable TFT dash with phone connectivity.

GSX-S1000GX

Weighing in at 205 kg including a full 14-litre tank of fuel, the GSX-8R isn't as light as some rivals but should still be more than manageable for most riders. Like the Japanese 600 cc four-cylinder sports bikes that dominated the market in the 1990s (before they became too track-focused for most riders), it's clearly designed as a one-bike solution for buyers who don't have the space, cash or inclination to own multiple machines for different roles.

Suzuki's second new model for 2024 also uses the same engine and offers multi-role appeal, but with a very different look and posture. The V-Strom 800RE is the logical addition to the V-Strom 800DE that was launched last year, essentially offering the same package but in a cheaper, more road-biased form. Gone are the DE's wire wheels and 21-inch front rim, replaced by cast alloys, measuring 19 inches at the front and 17 at the rear. In comes shorter-travel suspension - 150 mm at each end instead of 220 mm - with non-adjustable Showa components in place of the DE's adjustable ones. The bars are narrower, the pegs are higher and further back, sacrificing the DE's off-road riding position for something that's a little more comfortable for long on-road runs.

As on the other models using this engine, there's still tech including a TFT dash, traction control and an up/down quickshifter, along with LED lighting.

The last new model to join Suzuki's 2024 range is the GSX-S1000GX, a so-called 'crossover' bike designed to compete with the likes of Ducati's Multistrada and BMW's S1000XR. Like the V-Strom 800RE, it's a machine that combines a high-rise riding position with road-oriented suspension and tyres, but the GSX-S1000GX is a much higher-performance prospect thanks to the aluminium chassis and GSX-R1000-derived 999 cc four-cylinder engine - already familiar from the GSX-S1000, GSX-S1000GT and Katana models.

V-Strom 800RE

That combination makes for 112 kW (150 hp) in a tall, 232 kg package that promises plenty of comfort as well as speed. That comfort comes not only from the roomy riding position but also high-tech Showa electronic suspension that uses skyhook technology to monitor the bike's position in relation to an imaginary point above it, adjusting the damping 1,000 times per second in response to readings from stroke sensors, accurate to within 1/1,000th of a millimetre, to iron out bumps before you even feel them. It also includes a form of electronic anti-dive - Suzuki's Deceleration Damping Control - as well as electronic rear preload adjustment and ties in with the rest of the bike's electronics to offer a huge array of riding modes and options. Those systems, including cornering traction control and ABS and a variety of power levels and throttle maps, are all accessed via a large 6.5-inch TFT dash that includes full map-based navigation.

Kawasaki

Kawasaki unveils first hybrid bikes By Ben Purvis

The world's first 'strong' hybrid production bikes have been launched in the form of Kawasaki's Ninja 7 Hybrid and Z7 Hybrid - but are they answers to a question that nobody asked?

The two bikes are essentially identical, differing only in their fairings and bar heights, with the Ninja taking a sportier role and the Z7 Hybrid a more upright roadster stance, and the technology both share is undeniably impressive.

Z7

Power comes from a 451 cc parallel twin engine that's related to the twin in the new Eliminator 500 and the Ninja 500 and Z500 models that replace the previous Z400 and Ninja 400, but in the two Hybrid models it puts out a peak of 43.5 kW (58.3 hp) as there's no intention to meet the 'A2' licence rules that the other models comply with, leading to their sub-35 kW (47 hp) outputs.

However, the Ninja 7 Hybrid and Z7 Hybrid don't stop there, as both also get a 9 kW (12 hp) electric motor coupled to a 48V lithium-ion battery that hides under the seat. The two powertrains can be used separately - allowing the bikes to operate in pure-electric mode for up to 12 km at low speeds, in petrol-only mode (also recharging the battery) when out of town or, by using the 'E-Boost' function, combining both the electric and combustion engine power for a peak of 51.1 kW (68.5 hp) to maximise performance for brief periods.

As with most electric bikes, it's the torque of the electric motor rather than its peak power that really adds to performance, and Kawasaki says that the two hybrid machines offer performance that's on a par with a 650 cc-700 cc bike, but with off-the-line acceleration that matches a 1,000 cc superbike and economy that's better than a 250 cc machine.

These two power units are combined via a shared transmission, an automated six-speed manual that's controlled by buttons on the left bar - there's no clutch lever or foot-operated lever - or can work in a full-automatic mode. E-Boost is activated using its own separate button.

Ninja 7

Like most four-wheeled hybrids, there's also an idle-stop system, so the combustion engine stops when you come to a halt, and in 'Eco' mode, the bike will pull away using pure electric power before kicking the engine into life once on the move.

The electric motor also allows Kawasaki to include a 'Walk' setting that lets the bike use its electric power to shuffle forwards or backwards at low speeds, helping when it comes to parking or moving the bike around a garage.

The tech is impressive, but the chassis spec is less imposing, with similar suspension and brakes as the Ninja 650 and Z650 models.

Whether customers will buy these new hybrids remains to be seen, but given the relatively good fuel economy already achieved by bikes like Suzuki's GSX-S800 - while offering more performance - and the expected high prices of Kawasaki's hybrids, they could be facing a tough challenge to attract buyers beyond the most dedicated of early-adopters.

Galfer

Galfer Colored Brake Rotors

EICMA 2023 saw Spanish brake components manufacturer Galfer add new versions of its popular 'Disc Wave' rotor designs in six color finishes - red, blue, gold, orange, gloss black and contrasting black - for H-D, Indian and Victory applications.

By applying an innovative color anodizing treatment to the aluminum center, Galfer has brought an eye-catching custom touch to its avant-garde, but highly effective rotor design.

Galfer USA President Sandro Milesi says that "from now on, it will no longer be necessary to sacrifice aesthetics for performance - now riders can get the best of both worlds in one great design solution."

Noted for its precise and efficient braking, Galfer Disc Wave rotors are said to dissipate more heat under heavy breaking - making them particularly effective for large displacement Touring and Cruiser use, with increased pad track area delivering improved control and braking performance.

They are available for front and rear brake applications in 292 mm and 300 mm as OE replacements and in an oversize 330 mm for the front.

GPR Italia

GPR 95 dB compliant full system for 2023 Versys 650

Long established and sustainability pioneering exhaust manufacturer GPR Italia has added another exhaust system in its 95 dB compliant 'Furore Silentium' line - for the 2023 Kawasaki Versys 650.

Co-owner Mauro Orlandi told IDN that this new titanium system meets the 95 dB noise level limit that many local and regional authorities in Europe are imposing in their jurisdictions.

This lower limit is more restrictive than the current EU standard approval regulations, and what started out as a draconian over-reaction to perceived rural noise issues in the Tyrol is now spreading and being adopted in an ever-increasing number of European regions.

An evolution from its existing Euro 5 EU approved and homologated silencers, the new line is made using mechanical silencing technology "which allows perfect compliance with the new requirements, even with complete systems like this one for the Versys 650 that is equipped with approved catalysts.

"Using titanium means it is lighter than the OEM system and that helps to deliver a +2.5 hp power increase in its approved configuration - with the kind of deeper sound that riders appreciate."

Available in a 'natural' or heat resistant black ceramic finish, as well as meeting the 95 dB limit, it is ISO 14021 certified in compliance with a product cycle that meets circular economy parameters.

In addition to the Versys 650, at the time of writing the new system was already available for Ténéré 700, KTM 790/890 Adventure and Duke models, the Honda Transalp 750, and Kawasaki Ninja and Z 650 models, with more applications to be added.

Surflex clutch disc kits for KTM 125 GS 2T

Internationally respected Italian clutch specialist Surflex has reissued two complete clutch disc kits for the KTM 125 GS - a two-stroke model that was first produced by KTM some 40 years ago, for the 1984 model year.

Though it has evolved through many iterations since then, its popularity has never really been in question. With so many versions still in existence, dealers can be sure there is a lot of demand for gaskets and seals for it.

Complete clutch disc kit for competition use, with organic friction material and seven sintered discs, plus one disc with organic crankset.

This complete clutch disc kit for competition use, with organic friction material, consists of seven sintered discs plus one disc with organic crankset.

The sintered materials produced by Surflex are composed of selected metal powders of very fine grain size that are precision-pressed and brought to high temperatures in specifically tuned furnace environments.

Surflex sintered discs have "unmatched characteristics in dry clutches because they retain their high coefficient of friction even at high temperatures".

For enthusiast use, the kit consists of eight discs with organic friction tracks made of a new generation of resin and fibre mix.

For enthusiast use, the kit consists of eight discs with organic friction tracks made of a new generation of resin and fibre mix, specified to withstand high temperatures without generating additional heat. There are eight bare steel discs with 26 internal teeth - as in the OEM setup.

Both the two kits are fully interchangeable with the originals that they replace.
