Spanish motorcycle registrations

Spain: August motorcycle registrations +17.72%

Having been +13.03% for June (21,057 units) and +16.45% for July (23,793 units), the latest new motorcycle registration numbers from ANESDOR, the motorcycle industry trade association in Spain, show continuing signs of market improvement, with registrations for August up by +17.72% at 13,742 units - the best August Spanish market performance since before the 2009 economic crisis.

The growth means that the market lag in Spain has declined again on an annualised basis to 'just' -14.81% YTD (102,775 units, compared to 120,645 last year).
Like most of Europe, after a good start to the year in January and February (+11.96% and +19.28% respectively), registrations in Spain fell off a cliff at -46.64%, -94.43% and -43.68% respectively in March, April and May.
Moped registrations were +134.84% in August (3,060 units), and at 13,875 units YTD are now up at +12.22% compared to the first eight months of 2019. In total PTW terms, Spain was +29.49% in August and is now just -12.30% (116,650 units) for the year to date (compared to 133,009 units last year).
Following his recent participation in a series of transport industry-wide and motorcycle-specific initiatives in Spain, ones that called for government help for the sector, Jose Maria Riano, General Secretary of ANESDOR, stated that "government aid through the RENOVE and MOVES plans have been very useful, but it is also now clear that the lockdown had concealed a great demand for motorcycles and powered two-wheelers of all kinds.
"However, while it is clear that there is an ever-growing appreciation of the benefits that a two- wheeled transport solution brings, there remains great uncertainty about the coming months. We do not yet know, at this stage, if the demand will sustain and translate into real PTW market growth for the year".
The top selling model in Spain YTD has been the Kymco Agility City 125, followed by the Honda PCX 125 and Yamaha NMAX 125. Honda remains overall market leader with 18.3% of the Spanish market, followed by Yamaha, Kymco, Piaggio and BMW (6,850 units sold YTD for a 6.4% market share). Scooters account for 58% of the market in Spain, followed by road bikes (39%).
