German motorcycle registrations

German motorcycle registrations +8.74 percent in March

The latest new model registration statistics released by the IVM, the motorcycle industry trade association in Germany, show that the “New Year Hang Over” from the pre-registration of Euro 3 compliant inventory, before the Euro 4 deadline became effective on January 1st 2017, is finally working its way out through the reported statistics.

The IVM put total new PTW registrations for March at +3.6 percent (26,183 units) comparted to March last year, and starting to catch up on a year-to-date basis with the statistics showing registrations at -6.87 percent (35,281 units) for the first three months. The monthly and year-to-date statistics do not take account of the Euro 3 inventory registered by December 31st 2016 but sold from dealership showrooms and elsewhere as pre-registered zero mileage models in January, February and March 2017.
In motorcycle terms, March is reported as being +8.74 percent (21,109 units), with the first three months of 2017 at -1.63 percent (28,282 units).
The top selling motorcycle in Germany in the first three months of 2017 was BMW’s R 1200 GS (2,739 units), followed by their R nineT variants (1,218 units) and Honda’s CRF 1000 ‘Africa Twin’ third (844 units).
With nine models in the top twenty best sellers, it is no surprise that BMW is market share leader for the first quarter in Germany with 8,868 units sold for a 25.14 percent total PTW market share (up on their first quarter 2016 market share performance).
Honda is second (4,566 units sold for a 12.94 percent total PTW market share), with Yamaha third (3,593 units, 10.18 percent share), Kawasaki fourth (3,515 units, 9.96 share), and KTM fifth (2,367 units, 6.71 percent share).
In motorcycle market share terms, BMW is even further ahead of its rivals with 30.36 percent; Kawasaki is second with 12.09 percent (their Z 650 and Z900 are the fourth and fifth best-selling models) with Honda third (11.62 percent), Yamaha fourth (10.05 percent) and Harley-Davidson continuing their growing success in Germany fifth at 7.56 motorcycle market share with 2, 137 models sold in the first quarter.
