Germany - motorcycle registrations -3.98% YTD to July 2021
Having now been down for four of the seven months of 2021 so far, the latest data from the IVM, the motorcycle industry trade association in Germany, shows new motorcycle registrations having been heavily down in Germany in July by -23.20% at 13,317 units.
That compares to 17,339 units in July 2020 and 12,275 in July 2019. In fact, excepting for 2020, the July 2021 figure is the best for month seven in Germany since before the 2007/9 financial crisis.
For the YTD, registrations of new motorcycles are running at -3.98% for the YTD at 84,701 units, which is down on the first seven months of 2020 and 2019.
In total PTW terms, the first seven months of 2021 saw 138,497 new unit registrations in total (1.66% YTD) which, while some 2,000 units less than the same period of 2020, is not only ahead of the same period of 2019, but is also the best since before the 2007/9 financial crisis.
BMW remained market share leader with 21,331 units sold YTD for a 25.18% market share (with seven models in the top 25 best sellers YTD); followed by Honda, Kawasaki, KTM, Yamaha, Harley-Davidson, Ducati, Triumph, Husqvarna and Suzuki in 10th spot.
Unsurprisingly, the top selling model was BMW's R 1250 GS (7,477 units YTD), followed by the Kawasaki Z900 and Z650 in second and third, BMW F 900 R in fourth and Yamaha MT-07 in fifth, now just ahead of the Honda CRF1000L Africa Twin in sixth.
For the record - the 2019 full year saw the German motorcycle market grow by +4.38% compared to 2018 at 113,039 units, with 2020 posting a (theoretical) 132,126 units; however, that apparent 16.89% growth in a pandemic-hit year was distorted in the final quarter by the rush to pre-register unsold Euro 4 bikes before the final, extended deadline for doing so on December 31st.
It is worth noting that all units registered since January 1st, 2021 will have been Euro 5 compliant machines.
